The Friends of the Hunley, the nonprofit group that raises money to preserve the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley, has a new chairman. Sam Howell, a Charleston lawyer and history buff, succeeds Warren Lasch, who resigned in 2005. Charles Peery served as interim chairman. Sen. Glenn McConnell, chairman of the South Carolina Hunley Commission, said Howell's leadership will be important in raising money to build a museum to display the sub. The hand-cranked Hunley sank in February 1864 after ramming a black powder charge into the Union blockade ship Housatonic off Charleston. It was raised in 2000 and is being preserved in a lab at the old Charleston Naval Base.

Throw that piece of confederate junk back into the ocean.
