Appointments necessary for Berkeley, Dorchester residents seeking aid

The Post and Courier
Friday, August 29, 2008

Residents of Berkeley and Dorchester counties who need help with medicine, food or utility bills can begin calling Trident United Way offices in Moncks Corner and Summerville and Dorchester County Department of Social Services offices in St. George on Sept. 4-5 to set up appointments.

The Charleston County Human Services Commission took over assistance programs at the request of the Governor's Office of Economic Development until the end of the year after the Berkeley-Dorchester Counties Economic Development Corp. relinquished control of the programs earlier this month because of a $1.2 million deficit.

The Charleston agency has been working with Trident United Way and Dorchester County DSS to continue the programs.

Only clients not seen in 2008 will be given appointments for the roughly $500,000 in grant assistance that remains this year. More than 400 appointments are expected between Sept. 8 and Oct. 3, Charleston County Human Services Commission Deputy Director Reba Hough-Martin said.

In Moncks Corner, call 851-4155 or 761-6033; in Summerville, call 821-5000; and in St. George, call 563-9524.

I need my electric bill paid. Not because I don't have the money, but because I wanna go to dinner and a movie this weekend and I need my heer and nails did.

But in all seriousness, it is good that they are doing appointments because the way they did it before...first come, first serve...was a crock. There were people that worked at the offices who would call their family and friends to make sure they had a spot in line. And then there were those that got assistance every time it was offered. I think they need to limit the amount of assistance a person can get during the fiscal year and track the recipient's income and spending throughout that time.

If their spending and income don't suggest that they need the help they should be obligated to pay it back. Then again, they should be put on a payment plan regardless. Get the help and pay the money back along and along. A no interest loan type deal.
