The Palmetto State's effort in the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst (N.C.) Country Club could best be described as a lipout. Eleven South Carolina golfers were among the 312 who began qualifying last Monday, and Wesley Bryan of Chapin was the No. 2 qualifier heading into match play. Six players with state ties advanced, and Austin Cody of North Charleston and recently crowned S.C. Amateur winner Lee Palms of Greenville, were among 26 players who competed in a playoff for the final two spots in the 64-player match play draw. But Cody and Palms both missed out. Bryan, a University of South Carolina signee, lost in the second round of match play. The Gamecocks' Paul Woodbury of Lake City also won his opening-round match but lost in the second round, while Mark Anderson of Beaufort lost in the first round. Clemson's Jacob Burger of Orangeburg and Kyle Stanley of Gig Harbor, Wash., both won first-round matches but lost in the second round; Arnold Palmer's grandson, Sam Saunders of Orlando, Fla., lost an opening-round match. RiverTowne wins RiverTowne won the Charleston Area Men's Interclub Golf Tournament held at Patriots Point, scoring 27 points. Wescott Plantation and Legend Oaks tied for second with 23 points. Travis McCaskill of Patriots Point was the top individual, scoring 14 points. John Mahala of RiverTowne was second with 12 points and Wally West of Stono Ferry was third with 10 points. Wescott leads the yearly standings with 80.5 points, followed by: Shadowmoss, 76; Coosaw Creek, 75; Pine Forest, 74.5; Legend Oaks, 73; Stono Ferry, 70; Miler, 67; RiverTowne, 66; Dunes West, 62.5; Crowfield, 51.5; Municipal, 51.5; Berkeley, 49.5; and Patriots Point, 36.5.
