A tractor-trailer cab was left dangling over the side of a Mark Clark Expressway off-ramp on Wednesday, while the trailer it had been pulling, loaded with wood, fell to the ground. The driver was rescued from the cab and was charged with driving too fast for conditions, police said.

A passerby rescued a tractor-trailer driver left dangling three stories high inside a truck cab Wednesday after a crash on the Mark Clark Expressway, authorities said.

Rescuers went to a westbound off-ramp in North Charleston at 10:54 a.m. for a report about a person trapped inside an 18-wheeler, North Charleston firefighters said.

They found the truck upside down, hanging over the guardrail.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was charged with driving too fast for conditions, a police spokesman said.

The trailer "fell completely over the guardrail," Battalion Chief Eric Phillips said.

"The truck cab was hanging pretty much off the guardrail also. He was pulled out of the cab of the truck by a passerby," Phillips said.

The trailer went over the left side of the ramp, about midway down the semi-circular loop that takes traffic from the westbound Mark Clark to eastbound Interstate 26.

Phillips said the rig had been hauling 30 to 40 tons of wood.

North Charleston police identified the driver as Gary McCandless, 56, of Goose Creek.

The truck had a cargo of planks when the trailer toppled and was dragged over the side railing, Spencer Pryor, police public information officer, wrote in an e-mail.

The truck driver's father, Joseph McCandless, said he had talked to his son by phone at a hospital where he was being evaluated.

"He said he was just a little bruised up," Joseph McCandless said.

He said his son owns the truck and works as an independent contractor.

Authorities kept the ramp blocked for a little more than an hour before traffic started flowing again.

The rescuer's name was not available from police.

Wouldn't it be nice if the people who had to wait in traffic could get together and bring a class action lawsuit against people like this? Imagine the lost time, the resulting loss in productivity, the number of people late for work and how many hundreds, if not thousands, of gallons of gas were wasted because of this.

Traveling to fast for conditions. Glad he's ok but slow down. Typical for trucks coming over the I526 bridge. Police could sit there all day and write tickets AND SHOULD. That's a dangerous rd.
Happens often on these I-526 exit ramps. Virginia ave is the most troubled.

iceman:
I been wonting to do that for so long. When people are so careless of there driving and cause an accident, they should be responsible for the time others lose. Maybe if there is enough class action suites, people would be more responsible when their driving.

But I am happy to hear that this guy did get out saftely.

He was going too fast, his trailer started to jack knife, slamming into the wall and falling over. Nobody was hurt, so no biggie.

Now his truck is totaled, he's out of work, and we get to help him out with unemployment.

YAY!

Glad he's ok nonetheless.

Ice
Agree
Just had an "accident" on 171 east bound @ Publics - clipped power pole which is now listing about 10 -15 degrees toward the road way (high voltage wires (33K volts I beleave) in danger of falling on road way) and traffic has been diverted around it. We need to get this speed under control.

he totaled his truck and is out of work he will not draw unemplyment becase unless he pays for the insurance himself, the company hes leased to does not pay it either, hes a contracted driver. Just like most of the comments here uneducated drowning.class action, not enough where u been everbody sues for anything they can come up with. How do u get all that crap u buy a walmart? By luck!

trux
He should have thought of the consequences when he approached his exit at excess speed - must have been really rolling to loose the trailer and end up upside down. Fortunately there were no other vehicles in the way.

I am baffled by the # of accidents I see daily in the Chas. area. Unless I see it happen myself I am left to speculate how it happened, and so often it simply looks like the offending driver wasn't paying attention. In N.C. if you cause an accident costing the police agencies w/ a lot of overtime and assets that is allowed to factor into your sentence. With gasoline so precious and expensive I would almost endorse a lawsuit against obviously guilty drivers.

IF you bought it, a truck brought it!!! Truckers are a much needed necessity of America! Independent truckers are just as important as any truckers. Without them I wouldn't have a job and alot of American's would do without alot of necessary items that they use daily. Don't judge all truckers by the actions of a few. There are bad apples in all the barrels. This poor man now will have to go thru alot of trouble for his actions that I am sure were not intentional. He didn't wake up and say, "Hey, today I think I will wreck my rig and collect unemployment!" Be serious. He wouldn't want to wait the time out to get an unemployment check anyways when he was used to getting paid on a regular basis. We all know unemployment checks are only a fraction of what your past salary was...no one I know wants to be reduced to living that way on purpose. And this independent trucker has to pay for his own $1 Million dollar liability insurance! Not whoever he is leased too if leased at all!!!
Thank God no one was seriously hurt!

How it happened? I moved back here 4 yrs ago, and the damn car insurance business is raking in more here than in California and in the Washington D.C. area, it's f'ing ridiculous. It's all of the uninsured drivers (illegals or not), the illiterate drivers, and just plain old redneck dumbasses who think they own the road. One word...pathetic!

Traffic here is getting horrible by the day. This morning on the way to work, We were behind a car going thru an intersection in Wescott Subdivision on Wescott Blvd. and this man in a white small pickup pulled out to turn left to get in line with the rest of us, and for some freaky reason he didn't even look before he pulled out and stopped into the middle of the intersection when he almost hit the drivers side door of the car in front of us!!!! (I think that driver may have to go back home and change clothes!!) We hit the brakes and our jaws dropped open at the sight of such ignorance and driving while not paying attention!! I wish the police would have been there to see it!! This man needed to go back home and get back into bed!!! For REAL!!!!

BerkeleyCo_Mom_of_3 I agree with you about the insurance business....I couldn't believe that SC lets a person pay $500.00 at the DMV for a non-owners policy ( I think thats what its called) and they can drive legally a without insurance policy but if they get into an accident they can be sued. SUED FOR WHAT? THEY DONT HAVE ANYTHING...THIS IS STUPID AS HE**. It is just another scheme to get $$ for SC state that all of us have to pay for. I carry a $1000.00 deductable and I get really low monthly rates because of that. If I get hit by some person like that it will take all I can do not to beat the sh** out of them right there, because I know I will never get my vehicle fixed unless I pay for it myself. I am thinking on dropping my deductable back to $250.00 because I just know that some ass**** will plow into me any day now.

Just wondering......how many of you perfect drivers has ever taken that same exit or other exits at a speed over the posted limit? Can even one of you say you have never sped on lowcountry roadways? I know I couldn't and still consider myself honest. Overslept, kids not cooperating in the morning, bad hair day, didn't sleep well the night before or your boss is going to have your rear if you are late one more time. We all have been there and I am pretty certain that if any of us caused an accident and some fine was levied against us from the people sitting in traffic or because the police had to work the scene of the accident we would be on here or some other site raising all manners of h@ll!!!! Not saying that this driver was not reckless or negligent by his actions, but come on people. It happens, maybe too often, but instead of complaining on here get of your computers and do something about it. Go to your city/county council meetings; let your voice be heard. Action instead of reaction!

You know coah...this is a new interesting outlet for me to escape the daily routine of my job...it provides me with such fascinating news coverage(snicker), several good laughs, and the chance to look busy if someone walks in so they won't bother me for some bullcockyreason. Can I help it if I have the abundance of my workload finished by 8:30 am some days?

LMAO BerkeleyCo_Mom_of_3!!!! I think we could be friends!!
I also am well known in my schools and city of Dorchester County. My personal opinion, which is the main reason for these boards, is that if you are under stress from the kids, the boss, your bills, you hair or your dam* makeup didn't go on right...DON'T GET BEHIND THE WHEEL! KEEP YOUR AZ* IN BED! DO US ALL A FAVOR AND DON'T DRIVE!
And, Yes this is my opinion!!

My husband and I passed this accident shortly after it happened. The traffic was flowing freely on 526, and those signs were lit up warning people that the accident had occurred. We thought for sure that the driver had perished, as it looked as if the cab where the driver would be sitting was completely smashed in. Firemen were standing against the railing like they were just waiting for something. We were shocked to hear that the driver walked away with bumps and bruises. It is really upsetting to see something like this, and I am very glad that the driver is okay.
Whoever helped that guy out of there was one brave person. I would have been terrified to look inside of that cab.

I am sick of hearing the 'if I bought a truck brought it' So what!!! Does that give them the right to ignor the speed limits and endanger everyone around them just to deliver things we could mostly do without for a day if them drove slower! I see them ALL the time going way over the limit and in the left lane slowing all traffic down! THe act like they own the roads. Alot of the truck I see look like they are falling apart. Look at how many truck accident there have been this year alone and the damage they have caused to cars around them and the deaths. They should have to drive slower and stay out of the left lane.I would gladly do without what they think is so important to drive at breakneck speed to get here and run over anyone in thier way. It USE to be that the truckers were friendly and help someone in trouble, not anymore. You have all these speed freaks that are on all kinds of drugs to keep them up and rolling, cheating the log books and so on. There are a FEW good ones out there but the rest are just jerks behind 80 thousand pounds of metal coming at you at 80/90 mph! I have not seen ONE being pulled over! Im on the road alot, and I see cars pulled over all the time. I have no sympathy for them at all. They cause more harm anymore that good.

I knew that truck looked familiar. I've seen this guy on road in the N. Rhett area several times, and let's just say you reep what you sow. The excessive speeding, tailgating, and just blatant disregard for fellow motorist will one day catch up with you. If you're forunate, no injury or death will come to you or anyone else. The other day I saw someone doing those very things. He had a window sticker that was "In Memory of" one of his relatives, and yet he was trying to ensure that another family would have get to one of these memorial stickers for one of their loved ones. It's sad that others have to pay for anothers stupidity.

I know class action law suites would not work, but when your sitting in traffic after an accident, it ticks you of and you say to yourself, the person who is responsible for this should pay for people gas and time that they have wasted. Maybe they would be more careful of there driving.

Hell I had problems getting the person to pay who hit me while I was sitting at the light. The insurance company try to say I was 20% at fault, since I had a car with stick shift and I did not have my foot on the brake, which means my brake lights were not on, so the person thought I was moving. I laugh so hard I think I bust a kidney.

People just don't think about what they are doing anymore when there driving. They seem to have forgotten that a wrong move could cost you your life.

Take away his CDL forever. This is a known wreck area. The speed limits are post very big. If he can't follow that then don't let him drive.

trux- boo friggin' hoo. the guy was speeding and he knows it like the rest of us do now. He has to make money, so the more containers he hauls, the more cash he earns. So speed things up and well, follow the logic. Doesn't have unemployment insurance? That's his fault. He can pay into the system but he'd rather earn every cent than possibly have that little ace in the hole. The joys of Independent contracting. We know how the cheap goods get to Wally world don't try to paint yourself as the latest American heroes. When they remember they aren't the only ones on the road and practice some consideration....then again pigs might fly.

Local accidents in the Charleston area? It rains they freak out, they speed and text and yap on the phone; they don't pay attention and think they are the only ones on the road. People think it is a "right" to drive.

The class action lawsuits would be nice but alas they are but a pipe dream. We are to involved in schemes to pay for irresponsible people's insurance.

Not surprising! My job has me driving throughout the low country daily, and the semi trucks and dump trucks drive entirely too fast! BTW, wasn't there 2 accidents involving dump and semis the same day? Where are the law enforcement officers? Want to draw in some serious $$$$'s. Start patrolling and ticketing these wreckless drivers and maybe our roadways will be a little safer.
Yes, I know that passenger vehicles are also driving too fast and I think the tickets should be flying out of officers ticket books daily!!

No excuss for driving too fast, but he has to compete for buisiness with the illegal aliens and Mexican nationals that are aloud to drive here and don't have to abide by the same regulations as we do.

For Example I saw 14 year old who had blocks so he could reach the pedals. I called the cops about it and they said that they could not interfere with trucks comming up from Mexico.

Posted by luvmydogs59 on August 21, 2008 at 7:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

According to the news last night, because the driver was going too fast, the load shifted and that is mainly what caused him to overturn. How many accidents will it take before the truck drivers in this area get the picture??

I spent 5 months riding in a truck with my ex a few years ago. He was a very good driver who didn't speed and actually drove with good care. We used to have other trucks flying past us at crazy speeds...we would be doing, let's say 72 in a 70 zone and another truck would fly by doing around 85!! Totally stupid!! It's no wonder many major trucking companies have governed their trucks not to be able to go over a certain speed.

And the man who rescued the driver was on the news, but didn't get his name. Kudos to him for helping the driver!

Everyone tries associating accidents or accidental deaths to speeding.. This is NOT TRUE!!! It is due to being able to receive a drivers license after driving around the block once.... We need to educate our drivers, currently they are ignorant and do not know how to operate their vehicle properly.

526 fimiliar as everyone seems to be with it, already know they conduct frequent speed traps. the reason u dont see trucks pull is most are tipping the scales around 80,000lb coming from the rail yards cant gain the speed up the bridge and of course the cb. this in turn slows you down from the 90mph your traveling impeding, in your mind your progress. what gets me most is the tailgating thats always brought up about trucks 9 out of 10 times the vehicle being tailgated drops from the 90 mph there going and decides to get in front of the truck and slow down to 45 mph little hard not to close the gap hauling 80,0000 just ruining your already wonder commute. how many 4 wheelers in the last month been on there lid @ top of the bridge sight more than trucks. heres a clue see a truck get out of the way put your newspaper down and dont linger problem solved.
