Clyburn: Obama has 50-50 shot

S.C. representative set to give key speech at convention

The Post and Courier
Thursday, August 14, 2008

Rep. Jim Clyburn

The Post and Courier

Rep. Jim Clyburn

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn hopes his time in the spotlight at the Democratic National Convention will help U.S. Sen. Barack Obama win the presidency and give a boost to his party in South Carolina.

"I would think that our chances of winning in November are probably 50-50," he said Wednesday. "If we were to put together a good campaign, stay on message ... I think we'll be successful. It's a historic election in so many ways, and what we have here is an opportunity to demonstrate to the American people that Democrats ought to be back in charge of the White House."

Clyburn, who addressed the party's 2004 convention as vice chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, said he's tentatively scheduled to speak at the convention Aug. 27. It's one of the biggest nights of the convention, with former President Clinton and Obama's wife, Michelle, also expected to give speeches.

The Democrats haven't unveiled a detailed program of their Aug. 25-28 convention, though the party announced Wednesday that former Virginia governor and Senate candidate Mark Warner will give the keynote speech.

One potential drama to the convention will be to see how well the party — which saw an extended and hotly fought primary battle between Obama and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York — comes together. One lingering question is whether Clinton's name will be placed into nomination so her delegates have a chance to vote for her. Clyburn said he hopes it is not.

"I do not believe that would be productive at all. It's one thing to go to Denver unified. We need to leave Denver unified," he said. "The extent to which the American people do not think we've got it together as a party and are not together as Democrats will be counterproductive."

Asked whether former senator and presidential candidate John Edwards' confession of marital infidelity would affect Democrats' moods as they head toward Denver, Clyburn replied, "I don't think it will have any impact at all."

Clyburn said he expected to work on his address this weekend, but he noted that the most important speech will come when Obama accepts the nomination.

"Not just because of the historical aspect of him being the nominee, but it occurring on the 45 anniversary of the 'I have a dream' speech (by civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.) in the 40th year of the King assassination and in the 60th year that our own state's senator (Strom Thurmond) bolted the party over the integration of the armed services.

"All of that to me makes it a very historic convention and makes that speech a very historic speech."

While the convention ultimately will set the tone for the presidential race, it also could influence the success of South Carolina Democrats running this fall.

"We have an outside chance of winning this state (for Obama), but a very good chance of picking up legislative seats in South Carolina, all of which would bode well for this party coming back to its historical role," Clyburn said.

"I would think that our chances of winning in November are probably 50-50,"

Wow now that rocket science!!

Obama better be extra careful the next couple of weeks. The chances of the Clintons allowing him to actually make it to the convention alive are 50-50 at best!

Yeah "whocares" I swear I keep waiting on that too. Missed a chance when he did his "world tour". I keep thinking we are going to wake up to hear his plane went into the side of a mountain and Hiliary was first on the crash scene.

As really bad as I think he is for our country what you are suggesting is, IMO, far far worse in the long term for our country.

BTW I never thought I would see the day when the Clintons looked like the less painful result. :) :(

cypress...they did a spot on Fox News last night about a group calling themselves P.U.M.A. (Party Unity My Azz). They have a petition started, signed by delegates (300 needed) to allow HRC be on the ticket. They claim that 15 million people support Clinton and, with that number of supporters, she should be on the ticket. They claim to have just over 200 signatures.

That being said, I think that if they succeed in any way, shape, or form, they will be causing more of a split in the Democratic party than already exists.

THAT being said, I'm voting for myself. I think I'd be a great <cough!> president.

<achoo!>

When John McCain wins, I hope all of you Obama bashers are ready to send all your draft age kids and grandkids to the middle east to continue W's "Let's bring democracy to these people" campaign.

If Clyburn and Michelle Obama actually speak at the convention it will do him in. All three of them are blitheing idiots.

Agreed, volsfan...Even though the president that activates the draft will be chastised to no end, I say it would be a good thing.

Only thing you'd have to worry about then is friendly fire...

Posted by captivated on August 14, 2008 at 8:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Okay, so McCain is elected, reactivates the draft, choses Sanford as his Veep, Sanford issues law stating anyone caught busting a sag will have a choice of going to jail or joining the military, McClain starts war with Russia, all military age men and women bail and head for Canada. This could get interesting.

... "We have an outside chance of winning this state (for Obama), but a very good chance of picking up legislative seats in South Carolina, all of which would bode well for this party coming back to its historical role," Clyburn said.

What, historical role for SC or for the country? Sorry, I haven't lived in SC when Democrats were in charge. Republicans of late don't bode well, either.

As far as a "historical role" for the country, how far back is Clyburn looking?

Posted by captivated on August 14, 2008 at 9:09 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Coldbeer, I did 20 in the Air Force, I had 3 brothers who served and my 23 year old son is active duty Air Force. Our military is being strained to the limit and with all the tough anti-Russia talk coming from McCain' the draft may end up being the only solution.

Clyburn is a scouge on the residents of South Carolina! He is a party demagog who only follows the liberal socialist agenda of the national demagogs! Obama must not win! Not because he has black heritage, BECAUSE HE IS A MARXIST, SOCIALIST, LIBERAL and PROBABLY COMMUNIST! THAT IS NOT THE USA!!!!

You conservatives trip me out, really, anyone will be better than the abomination that the Bush presidency has been. While I am not thrilled about either of the candidates, either one will be about 20 times better than Bush. At least I will not go into a major depression after this election. The biggest problem that either candidate faces is digging are selves out of the abyss this administration has left us in. Seriously, folks!

I agree, BUT you have to recognize that when we chose to destroy Japan with atomic bombs, we stayed and helped them rebuild. When we chose to destroy Germany, we stayed and helped them rebuild.

That's what separates our country from any other nation is that we HELP them after a conflict. Obama wants to pull out like a school kid who's about to bust a nut...That's not the American way.

Not everyone who votes for Obama watches Oprah, and not everybody who watches Oprah is a freeloader on welfare.
Stereotyping is wrong.

A vote for McCain is a vote for war, and a vote for big corporations who make money destroying and rebuilding.
This war was planned out by the bush administration LONG BEFORE 911. It's a war based on LIES.
Our soldiers are dying because big corporations want OIL.
What do we get out of all this? Higher gas prices.

George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years. The first six the economy was fine.
A little over one year ago:
1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%.
4) the DOW JONES hit a record high--14,000 +
5) American's were buying new cars, taking cruises, vacations o'seas, living large!...

But American's wanted 'CHANGE'! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress & yep--we got 'CHANGE' all right. In the PAST YEAR:
1) Consumer confidence has plummeted ;
2) Gasoline is now over $4 a gallon & climbing!;
3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION
DOLLARS & prices still dropping;
5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.
6) as I write, THE DOW is probing another low~~11,100--
$2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS, BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS!

YEP , IN 2006 AMERICA VOTED FOR CHANGE!...AND WE SURE AS HELL GOT IT!!!....NOW OBAMA, the DEM'S CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT--AND THE POLLS SAY HE'S GONNA BE 'THE MAN'--CLAIMS HE'S GONNA REALLY GIVE US CHANGE!!....JUST HOW MUCH MORE 'CHANGE' DO YA THINK YOU CAN STAND???.....

**I AM REPOSTING SO OUR LIBERAL FRIENDS CAN READ THIS AGAIN! YOU CAN BLAME THE LIBERAL, DO NOTHING CONGRESS FOR THE PROBLEMS WE ARE FACING!!!!**

So……these are some of the reasons I blame the Bush Administration and this has little to do with this particular congress…..
1. Leaving us with a 9 trillion dollar budget deficit.(BIG ONE)
2. Lying to the American people about an unjust war
3. Going shortsighted into war with Iraq, causing the war to be totally mismanaged.
4. Appointing cronies with little experience to run critical government agencies
5. Appointing unscrupulous people to key positions, these are the people that are really in charge in the 1st place (Chaney, Rumsfeld, Gonzalez)
6. The Katrina debacle and showing lack of concern for American citizens in a time of emergency (I know, it was messed up on every level, State, Federal and Local, Democrat-Republican, but Bush could have shown leadership but he didn’t)
7. Not approving a health care bill for children, unethical in my book on so many levels
8. The Patriot Act
9. No Child Left behind (I know, because rhetoric they sound good, but they are not, common republican tactic)
10. The administrations short term energy policy
I really could go on all morning, but I don’t have the time so here is a web sight you guys might want to look at
http://www.hightowerlowdown.org/node/160...
While this website brings several things to light, there are not my opinion but mostly facts, figures and someone else’s opinions.
Anyhoo, top ten is my opinion…..I did not get it from some web site or talk radio like many of you do. Really, try thinking for yourselves, it does wonders (ColdBeer, not talking to you, while I disagree with you allot I do see that you think for yourself).

guided, while I agree with you on some of the reasons you listed, let me point out that GW will be out soon and the "healing" can begin for the democratic party. The only problem is that should McCain win, it doesn't matter what he does, good or bad, they will blame him and continue to blame GW.

However, if Obama get into office, don't you think that he'll also:

2. Lie to the American people... (already "changed his mind" on several issues)

4. Appoint cronies with little experience to run critical government agencies (he's going to get his friends, you know it)

5. Appoint unscrupulous people to key positions... (same folks as listed above)

Look, I just don't think Obama has the experience needed to be president and while McCain does have the experience, he's just kinda, blah, for lack of a better term.

I'll just vote for myself because:

poli = many

tics = blood sucking vermin

What is wrong with you people? I'm not being racist so hold your breath. I'm being prejudiced. Towards morons. Those of you who are on here posting comments with reasons of justification for why W. and this administration has been a good thing for America, and all the others who are agreeing and cheering them on, This post is for you.

I think the year was 2003, on an aircraft carrier, with a little president in his pretend flight suit, claiming "Mission Accomplished," and misleading us, to believe our gig was "Accomplished," in Iraq. Here's the problem with that........Not only is our gig not "Accomplished," in Iraq, but we've neglected to pay any attention to, until recently, the re-structuring of Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan; if you remember it's a small country that housed the terrorist organization responsible for the actual attacks on 9/11. We've let this administration repeatedly mislead us and then try to change the subject with new B.S. such as: "The troop surge is working." I hope it's f'ing working. Our "Mission," was "Accomplished," in 2003. You guys make me sick. You have the gall to sit here and throw around the idea of reinstating the draft, and others to agree with that garbage? Defending America is over folks, soon our rule of civilization will be over, and it's gradually happening now.

Continued....

Does it not bother you that we've tied up our military options to the point we're at currently? Where a knowingly power hungry Russia is on the world stage, smacking us around, and telling us to do something about it? That's when we need the military. Not for Sadaam Hussein. For Russia; a country that has bluntly and confidently ignored our President's advice and signed a cease-fire agreement, all the while---their tanks are still rolling right on through Georgia, and soon they'll have that country completely occupied. I want all of you guys who would rather knock Obama and make fun of his name, etc. etc. to pay attention!

George W. Bush is recorded, (on video and audio--look it up,) as saying something along the lines of this........."Yeah Vladi and I," meaning Vladimir Putin obviously, "are good friends. I looked into his eyes and I saw his morals and what he stood for, and I like the guy. I peered into his soul."

That's the idiot we're dealing with here people. How much dumber could he possibly be?

Go ahead and vote for John McCain, and trash Obama. If we had the resources to back up the way McCain talks, it would be one thing, but unfortunately we don't. And you can blame that on W. and this favorite administration of ours. John McCain is a true American hero. No argument there. He served our country proudly, honorably, and regretably, was taken hostage. He has my immense respect for his service to this nation. However he doesn't get my vote......because......he has no better sense than to threaten and mouth off to Russia, with no available military options. That scares me. I'm all for defending this wonderful nation, but I have no patience for another George W. Bush, who has put us into this dismal situation.

John McCain is an American hero; but shouldn't be America's next president, if has no better sense than that.

Lsst Continuation from earlier.....

Don't bash Obama because of his name, because of what this idiotic congress and Nancy Pelosi has done, or because rumor has it he's the Anti-Christ. I'm sick and tired of this republican-democrat B.S.

We are the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Don't be naive, closed-minded, and unwilling to give change a chance.

Don't state the facts you pulled up on the internet about gas prices, and the unemployment rate, etc. etc.

Wake up! Smell the B.S. and ask yourselves: Was George W. Bush really a good, adequate, and productive president? In your heart there's no way you think that he was. Don't let your conservative roots and morals fog your mind.

Be an AMERICAN! Not a republican or a democrat. Vote for who you really think is the smart choice. Don't be mislead and play follow the leader. I know it's unrealistic to think we'll ever be able to all just get along and have "Peace on earth." I'm not a freaking psychadelic party animal from the sixties. However, I do want to believe that we can say let's all get along, meaning let's unite as Americans. Sure we can bicker and argue but let's do it over the actual issues facing our tomorrows. Russia, eventually China, and unfortunately those old foes gathering once again inside of those caves, over in Afghanistan. This is a great nation. I love it for so many reasons, but the main one is because I myself and you all are allowed to have these kinds of discussions with no reprocussions, (that rhymed,) meaning we're allowed to have our own opinions and allowed to speak our minds. So many other nations do not allow their people that right, and that's what I want to avoid.

Take it all in, breathe deep, and come to realize that if we don't come together soon, we're going to be like those Iraqi people, with some other nation roaming our streets, in tanks and enforcing rules upon us, with no ability to stop them.

…..just a couple of more comments and I got to get back to work.
I not going to debate my opinion on Bush, anymore today, it is not that I am afraid to substantiate it, I just don’t have the time…

Tripsa
I really don’t think Bush did much with 9/11 but go down there with a bull horn and rally people around this tragedy. A good thing, but really, anyone could have done it. For him, being president doing this time was really a lucky break for his popularity, really, think how low his numbers would be if it was not for 9/11?
Now, for my take on the election, I really like McCain in allot ways. War hero, pragmatist, a maverick, I think he is a man with integrity, and I really feel that he has most of America best interest in hand. That being said, his policies and his stance on the war, have me got me concerned. Likewise, Obama has not impressed me yet, he comes across as an ideologue, with out many solutions to the problems we are facing. Personally from the policies and debates, I liked Governor Richardson. But you don’t know, either one could be good or a bad president, time will tell. It depends on who they appoint to their cabinet, and it will probably come down to who they will chose for their Vive President, who I will vote for. Anyhoo, that’s my two cents worth.

Posted by WRMusic on August 14, 2008 at 12:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Clinton voted for that war..........NOT OBAMA. He in fact voted AGAINST it, and as far as "you people on the left," I never said I was on a particular side. I'm just stating the obvious.

By the way, where did you get these eroneous facts from about Obama saying he wanted to discontinue our missile defense program? I really must see or hear this for myself.

Posted by gneubeck on August 14, 2008 at 12:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Perhaps Jim Clyburn could perform a public service by exposing the real Obama. In spite of the determined attempts of the Obama handlers to obfuscate the details concerning Obama's subversive background, more and more Americans are seeing thru the Obama charade; and, are making an objective appraisal based on their own intelligence of the historical facts which are irrefutable. Obama is neither Christian nor Muslim. Unless he has had one of his very frequent epiphanies in the last week or two, he is a disciple and practitioner of Black Liberation Theology whose tenants have been amply articulated by Jeremiah Wright and James Cone. For 20yrs. Obama, under the tutorial of the fanatical Reverend Wright, immersed himself and his family in Black Liberation Theology, a Marxist derivative which rejects Christianity; and, which professes that the White race is equivalent to the Devil. It's amazing that anyone would be shocked at Obama's perverted view of the Bible. Rev. Wright's mentor, Black Liberation theologian, James Cone, in his book "For My People" states: "The Christian faith does not possess in its nature the means for analyzing the structure of capitalism. Marxism, as a tool of social analysis, can disclose the gap between appearance and reality, and thereby help Christians to see how things really are." It is this logic, reinforced by his mother who was an avowed Marxist, which has schooled Obama to seek economic parity in America thru income redistribution; i.e. Marxist Socialism; and, is an overriding theme of his campaign. Obama's repeated references to "economic parity" and "social justice" are simply Marxist jargon for "Taking more from you and giving it to others for the common good". Further, noone should be surprised at Obama's proclamation that American is NOT a Christian Nation. Although the Obama campaign has painstakingly attempted to lay a smokescreen to confuse the past religious associations of their candidate, hopefully a Christian America will send Obama an unmistakable message in November. It's what you get with an un-vetted candidate whose only skill is reciting a text from a teleprompter while even Jesse Jackson admits Obama arrogantly looks down his nose and "talks down to the audience." A characteristic which was front and center in Obama's comments about bitter folks in Small Town America who "Cling to their religion." Greg Neubeck

I did not know Bush was running this time. The conversations sure seem to be focused on him. I guess it is difficult to debate the issues regarding Mr Obama since his stance keeps changing so much, so lets bash the president. As far as Mr Clyburn is concerned it is easy to be elected for 20 some odd years when you have a gerrymandered district where the entire intent was to ensure a minority would be elected. As far as Mr Obama is concerned, I think it would be historic to have a Muslim president.

Newt, maybe you just got me wrong from the beginning. I was raised conservative/baptist, still hold some of those views, but lean hard to the middle of the line (independent) these days because of my ventures since the military and nobody can seem to agree anymore.

Parties are suppose to give balance but that will never happen unless both party's are willing to bend to get a good result every time...none of this "democrats got their way on this measure, so we get our way on the next..." crap.

I'm voting for my dog on election day.

Jne
McCain does not tow party lines...it one of the reasons I like him, it called bipartisanship, something that an extremist like yourself wouldn't understand.

palmettotree-You must be so proud! My son volunteered as soon as he graduated from college. I think the return of the draft is a definite in light of all the conflicts popping up in this world. Of course, the powers that be will never let it happen if it involves putting their offspring in harms way.

DPR - Cowboy George does not have to invade anything. He has this big bat called Condie that he has sent to Iran and is now sending to Georgia to beat some sense into these people who won't act right.

Question of the hour: if Obama was a white male, would he be facing the same type of criticism?

Thanks for your opinions.

Actually prosperous if Obama was a white male with his lack of experience, he would not be a presidential candidate.
IT WORKED FOR BUSH. IN FACT IT WORKED 2WICE, EVEN AFTER PEOPLE FOUND OUT HIS ASSOCIATION WITH OSAMA's FAMILY.

Dead,
Trying to reason with RW is a losing battle. He is a bitter and sad man. The same type of person that went into the Unitarian Church in Knoxville and shot and killed some if it’s members. The same type of person that would champion an planned parenthood bombing. You know the type, a real extremist. Really, he has little to say but, commie this, leftie that, same old crap, over and over and over and over. He is funny read about and pick on, but dangerous at the same time. I know, I should tease the lion, but sometimes I can not help it.

"Question of the hour: if Obama was a white male, would he be facing the same type of criticism?"

Question #2 - If Condi Rice or Clarence Thomas or Bill Cosby were in the running would Hollywood, the media or the black community support them?

Old white male answer - I would

Bush was a governor and owned a business. He ran a state (which is good experience for president and he ran a business. The only thing Obama has run is a presidential campaign).
BUSH MAY HAVE RAN A STATE, BUT OBAMA WAS IN THE STREETS WORKING WITH EVERYDAY AMERICAN PEOPLE. HOW DID BUSH IMPROVE ON POVERTY IN THE STATE HE RAN? HOW MANY BENEFITTED FROM THE BUSINESS HE OWNED? IF ANYTHING BUSH DID ONLY BENEFITTED A FEW, THEN IT WAS AN IDEA OF WHAT HIM BEING PRESIDENT WOULD BE LIKE. LOOK AT OUR ECONOMY, LOOK AT ALL THE FORECLOSERS, AND LOOK AT THE GAS PRICES. ALL THIS HAPPENED ON BUSH WATCH. SO IF THE BEST EXAMPLE OF BUSH EARNING TO BE PRESIDENT IS THE FACT THAT HE RAN A BUSINESS OR STATE, I'D RATHER START WITH SOMEONE FRESH. SOME ONE WHO KNOWS AND HAS WORKED WITH THE AVERAGE AMERICAN. THAT SOMEONE WOULD BE OBAMA. McCAIN IS JUST ANOTHER BUSH AND IF PEOPLE WANT 4 MORE YEARS OF THAT, DON'T COMPLAIN WHEN ALL OF US ARE HOMELESS WHILE THE FEW LIVE IN MANSIONS.

........THE LAST SAINT THAT WALKED THIS EARTH ALSO WALKED ON WATER. HE MADE THE BLIND MAN SEE AND THE SICK WELL. WHEN THE CRUCIFIED HIM HE ROSE FROM THE DEAD.
IF ANY OF US ARE LOOKING FOR 100% PERFECTION, THEN I SUPPOSE WE WON'T VOTE THIS YEAR. BUT IF WE ARE LOOKING FOR CHANGE, THEN THERE IS ONLY ONE PICK THIS GO ROUND. THAT PICK IS OSAMA. I'D RATHER DEAL WITH SOMEONE NEW, THAN THE SAME OLE SAME OLE. HOW BOUT YOU?

It is the dems that are refusing to allow us to drill for oil!!
YOU SHOULD BE AGAINST IT TO. OUR GREED WILL DESTROY MOTHER EARTH. IF IRAQ HAS OIL, EITHER WORK WITH THEM, OR LET'S USE ANOTHER MEANS OF RESOURCE. THE LAST THING WE SHOULD DO IS DESTROY THE EARTH....DON'T YOU THINK?
Bush tried to get drilling in ANWAR passed about 6 years ago and the Dems voted "NO".
MAYBE BECAUSE BUSH AND HIS FRIENDS WOULD BENEFIT MORE FROM IT. AGAIN, ONCE THE EARTH IS DESTROYED ALL OF US WILL SUFFER. WE WILL BE THE GENERATION TO DESTROY ALL MANKIND IF WE DON'T CONTROL OUR GREED. THAT AINT NOTHING TO VOTE FOR OR BE PROUD OF.
Giving gubmint handouts only perpetuates poverty. Bush created jobs.
IF YOU AND I PAY TAXES, IT'S NOT A HAND OUT. IT'S CALLED PAYDAY. THE GOVT. WORKS FOR US. WE PAY THEM, SO ANYTHING THEY GIVE BACK TO ANY OF US IS NOT A GIFT, IT'S WHAT WE HAVE EARNED AND DESERVE. HOWEVER, AINT IT FUNNY HOW THE PEOPLE WHO WORK FOR US LIVES BETTER THAN US? ANYTIME YOU HERE ABOUT A GUBMIT HANDOUT, I SUGGEST YOU GET IN LINE AND RECIEVE WHATS IS ALREADY YOURS TO BEGIN WITH.

Keep up with the "Bush lied".
OSAMA IS ON THE RUN, WHILE SADDAM IS DEAD. WHICH ONE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR 911 AGAIN?
YELLOW CAKE, RED VELVET CAKE, OR CHOCOLATE CAKE. DON'T YOU THINK SADDAM WOULD HAVE USED EITHER ONE OF THESE BEFORE HE WAS CAPTURED?

Socialism and Fascism wind up in the same place: Socialism. The difference lies in who embraces each. Far righties tend to Fascist, far lefties to Socialist. There is much that was fascist about the Nazi's despite the "Socialist" party name.

Far lefties tend toward government solving avaryone's problems and, eventually, owning the means of production. Far righties embrace things like more police power (and less rights for the accused), wiretapping and eavesdropping. All of these give power to the state. The lefties think the government can take care of everyone and the righties think the state should have what ever power needed to control the "bad people."

When the state has too much power, it all winds up in the same place Socialism. The Nazis did not own Oskar Schindler's factories, but they had so much power that he could not refuse their demands that he produce for the war effort (or anything else they may have wanted). In the end, both extremes become socialist.
