New Web site up for Park Circle

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Several residents and business-owners within the Park Circle neighborhood in North Charleston have created a Web site to keep residents informed of issues and events in the community.

www.MyParkCircle.com is volunteer-driven site founded by Jim Sears of Johns Island. Sears, who owns property in Park Circle, said MyParkCircle.com is a central location for community residents to receive and contribute information about Park Circle and the surrounding communities.

Contributors to the Web site include Jim Augustin, co-founder of the Noisette Co.; historian and Mount Pleasant attorney Ruth Williams Cupp; and Park Circle resident and community activist Mahwish McIntosh.

"We are in the 21st century," Sears said. "Online technology is such that these types of local community contributed online magazines are the wave of the future."

With the influx of new residents to the Lowcountry and North Charleston, Sears hopes the Web site will educate individuals about the history of the area as well as inform them of issues and events. Among other things, the site includes profiles on Park Circle artists, residents and eateries.

MyParkCircle.com is further proof of North Charleston's changing cultural landscape, Sears said.

He hopes those changes will not alienate long-time residents and encourages them to contribute articles, photos and ideas for the Web site.

"Many of the older communities may see the influx as both positive and negative — if the area becomes quote-unquote gentrified. We created the site to be as inclusive as possible."

North Charleston City Councilman Kurt Taylor said he has spoken to many longtime North Charleston residents who are witnessing the changes and are "embracing the revitalization."

The residents of Park Circle have been involved citizens who care about the city, Taylor said. He hopes community residents will support the Web site

"It's focusing on the neighborhood and the way of life of Park Circle, and it's celebrating how far we've come," Taylor said.

I actually live 5 (3 more than your suggested 2) blocks off of the Circle (toward Rivers!) and, while the neigborhood might not look pretty by your standards, I certainly do not reside "in a real s**thole." The neighbors, nearly all very longtime residents, may not be wealthy but they have created an extreme sense of community. Good, down home folks with humble but cared for homes (just like the one I live in).
