Accused LB opts for PTI

Sophomore linebacker DeAndre McDaniel is contending for a starting spot on the Tigers' roster.
CLEMSON — Clemson's DeAndre McDaniel has agreed to participate in a pre-trial intervention program to resolve his arrest for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. Robert Ariail, 13th Circuit solicitor, is expected to make an announcement this week concerning McDaniel's acceptance into PTI, a program that allows first-time offenders to have charges dropped and expunged upon successful completion. McDaniel, a sophomore who's contending for a starting spot at linebacker for the Tigers, confirmed he has agreed to pursue PTI. "I'm just listening to my lawyer right now," he said Monday. Now the big question is what discipline, if any, Tigers coach Tommy Bowden will impose. Bowden, whose team opens the season against Alabama on Aug. 30 in Atlanta, released a statement saying he won't have a comment until the PTI deal becomes official. "After the solicitor announces a decision," the statement read, "I plan to request a meeting with him and our administration, to better understand the facts of the case." McDaniel was arrested June 21 after an altercation with his girlfriend at his off-campus apartment. Abra Weeks, 19, alleged McDaniel choked her, punched her and shoved her down a flight of stairs. Kenneth Young, a Sumter attorney representing Weeks, said he's written a letter to Ariail supporting the PTI option. Young said Weeks also wants McDaniel to pay her medical bills for injuries she allegedly suffered during the incident. The charge is classified as a high-court misdemeanor. "He ought to be going into anger management and learning to deal with his frustration without pounding somebody," Young said. "And PTI takes time to complete, so he might not successfully complete the program. If he doesn't, he's back on the trial level." Young said Weeks endorsed the PTI option because "she still has feelings" for McDaniel. He also said Weeks has no intention of pursuing a civil suit. "She doesn't want to hurt him," he said. Nick Lavery, an attorney representing McDaniel, elected not to comment on the specifics of the PTI agreement until it becomes official. "Hopefully this matter is going to be resolved in an expedient manner," he said. A spokeswoman for Ariail said he did not wish to comment or elaborate on McDaniel's acceptance of PTI. McDaniel, 20, has yet to face any known discipline from the team or university. At a university hearing in early July, Clemson's judicial services committee ruled he was in good standing as a student after statements from him and two witnesses who refuted Weeks' account. Weeks, who is also a Clemson student, was not present at the hearing. It's been estimated the case could have taken six months to a year to reach trial. McDaniel said he has "no idea" what Bowden will do. "It's a lot of weight on my shoulders, but I'm just going through it," he said. "I'm just thinking positive through everything and letting it come to me." girly girl I just hope you will post the number of Clemson players arrested for comparison. I anxiously await your posts but will not hold my breath. Also do did you notice that some of the players were actually suspened or kicked off the team and not give a good standing with the football team.
Girly Girl why don't you actually post something realitive to the article. How do you feel about the actual charges?
I wonder what her posts would have been if this was a Gamecock player.

"Now the big question is what discipline, if any, Tigers coach Tommy Bowden will impose. Bowden, whose team opens the season against Alabama on Aug. 30 in Atlanta, released a statement saying he won't have a comment until the PTI deal becomes official. "
Oh no he is innocent. . . LOL! that's why he is going into PTI ? Whatta freaking joke. . .

That's quite a list GirlyGirl provided. I had no idea the Gamecocks had that many run in's with the law, so I decided to start reading the list. Being from out of town, I only started following the two state teams recently. I noticed on the report there were quite a few incidents that seemed to be listed as doubles. (ex: a player getting in trouble and then getting kicked off the team for that trouble.) I felt that was repetitve for purposes of showing how many instances there truly were. Then I noticed that was a theme throughout the whole list. Situations such as player left because of medical hardship, violation of team rules, academically ineligible, or a player listed twice for the same event. Out of the 160 "instances" listed, I counted 80 of them fell under this category. That's half of the list. I didn't include what I'd consider minor violations either on my list of 80. (slow day at work) I deem a minor violtation would be an instnace such as underage drinking. My kids have received punishment for the same offense, but I don't consider them bad kids for it. I can understand the Clemson fan's viewpoint and the picture they try to paint as to why those offenses are included in the list. I also noticed 6 of the listed offenses were related to a fight with clemson players, not exactly helping to the desired outcome of the posting. It looks like my lawyer came up with this list. All in all, it wreeks of sensationalization and petty obsessive behavior on the clemson fanbase. On the other hand, it does seem that in the end years of Lou Holtz's tenure, there were some violations. He's vilianized by many college football fans around the country for this reason. Certainly, there were crimes (theft, assault) that certainly deserved to be brought to light. Those crimes seemed to be dealt with and appropriate disciplinary action was taken from what I can gather on this list.
Which brings me to the point at hand.
The Clemson football player referenced in the article should receive a second chance in life. People make mistakes, and if you can repent for them, you deserve a chance to prove yourself as a good person in this country. Still, it reflects poorly on Clemson to let him on the team after what is basically an admission of guilt. Playing football is a priveledge and should be viewed as such. For Clemson to let him back on the team the same year shows where their true intentions lie and is a testament to what is most important to the university. From my perspective, the potential winning and the money that comes with it are blinding the administration to the larger picture on life.
After two years, I have come to the conclusion I like the way the Gamecocks and Steve Spurrier run their program better than Clemson and Tommy Bowden. I think I'll pull for the Gamecocks this year in the annual rivalry. Makes me feel like a local to pick a side.

Botany, you will soon see that there is no talking civily with Clemson fans. I would love it if we Gamecocks and Tigers could live in peace.......but it will never happen. People like IslandGirl and tigerbdog will berate you and call you a loser because you have freely chosen to back the University of South Carolina. According to Clemson fans, nothing ever, ever happens at Clemson. They have all day to post a bunch of half truths and an artificially extended list of USC's "problems", but won't even acknowledge that this player is admitting guilt in a case where a woman was assaulted by a man. That is a little more serious that underage beer drinking, in my opinion. Botany, you are a smart person and the reasoning in your post confirms that....welcome to the Gamecock Nation.
Prepare to be flamed and trashed by our Clemson "brethren".

Once McDaniel is found guilty in a courtroom, then you coots will have a leg to stand on. Your repsonse will be:
"Why would someone take PTI if they're are innocent?"
I don't think he is completely innocent, but he definitly isn't guilty of what he was arrested for. So its called (stay with me coots this is a big word) compromise.
Here is a question for the coots though. If DM in fact beat this girl, why does she still have feelings for him and doesn't want to hurt him?
Answer: She still thinks she has a chance to collect some of his NFL $$$.

If he was innocent, he wouldn't even be talking PTI. He would be going to trial to prove that he is innocent.
Gadsden- I know there are plenty of butthole USC fans out there as well. I just find it comical that in the comments to an article describing a CURRENT event, we get a artificially extended list of "problems" at USC. Most of which go back to the previous coach. A Gamecock missing class in 2002 has nothing to do with this player allegedly striking a woman......it is a problem, Clemson fans can smell the hypocricy, so they respond with a canned list of old stuff attempting to make USC look bad..........I don't ever want to "throw stones". I know that both schools have problems. But girlygirl just unleashed a rock quarry of half-thruths at us, so I don't think that responding as I did is a problem at all.

And chanicleer........plenty of times, a woman gets beat but still goes home to the man. Happens all the time. Does that mean we don't go after the man who hits a woman? Sometimes women go back to a man that beats them, just because they go back doesn't take the blame off the man for hitting her in the first place. Women sometimes like to give a man a second chance, but that doesn't mean the state should overlook abuse when it happens.

Girly girl is typical of Clemson football fans. They love to point at USC players when they get in trouble, but have no problems rationalizing when Clemson players do bad things. I don't really think keying a car or smoking pot is the same category as beating a small woman and throwing down stairs! To his credit Spurrier kicked D. Summers of the team. My grandfather played ball for Clemson, but having to listen to my obnoxious relatives at Thanksgiving has led me to pull against Clemson. Tommy Bowden is the epitome of mediocraty. He only won three games against Division One teams with winning records last year one of which was Central Michigan, and he still got a fat contrac from the idiots at Clemson. He had much more success at Tulane with someone elses players. I think Clemson and USC should kick off any players who violently assault women.

Yes it does, if the woman goes back to the man after beating her, she is doing the same exact thing yall are blaming Tommy for, taking abuse lightly. If a woman goes back to a man after that, then she obviously doesn't think the abuse was that bad. Women (or men) who continue in an abusive relationship are idiots and don't get my sympathy for the continued beatings they get.
Beat me once, shame on you. Beat me twice, shame on me.

Take your medicine thugger fans. This guy beat up a girl. The cops arrested him because of the physical evidence-- which according to the police, could not be self-inflicted. What's really shocking is that you tigs take such pride in calling out others, yet this skumbag was not suspended for one practice. Now that he is acknowledging fault for her injuries, what is Bowden to do? Give him a medal for taking responsibility now after lying to the administration initially? If we are all lucky enough, McDaniel will run into girly-girl and beat her down. At least McDaniel is just one gang rape away from getting suspended for a practice. Hypocrites!!!!!!!!!

Bowden will likely punish him by make him sit out a series of downs in the first quarter of the first game.

Baptism by fire from the Clemson bunch. It feels good to be in the competitve nature of an instate rivalry. Healthy for the soul if you ask me.
Being called a loser and reading an explination of how a beaten woman wants money, it seems as if my assertion is the correct one. Clemson as a university (fans and coaches) wants him on the football team. To me, this speaks volumes about the character of both.
A little over two weeks until college football season starts. God bless America and the football she bears every autumn.

'ACC forecast: Wait 'til next year again for Tigers
By Mark Schlabach
ESPN.com
(Archive)
Updated: August 12, 2008
Expansion hasn't gone exactly how the ACC envisioned it would after it raided the Big East for three teams in 2003. ACC champions are 1-9 in BCS bowl games in the past decade, and the league has yet to earn an at-large berth into a BCS game. Is this the season Florida State and Miami finally return to national prominence? Probably not. Is this another topsy-turvy season in which a team such as Wake Forest or North Carolina might stun the rest of the ACC? Maybe.
1. Clemson won't win the ACC.
The Tigers are loaded at the skill positions. Cullen Harper is the best quarterback in the ACC. Tailbacks James Davis and C.J. Spiller are two of the best runners in the country. Aaron Kelly is the best pass-catcher in the league. But Clemson might start two or even three freshmen on the offensive line, which isn't a good thing, and its linebacker corps is very thin. Alabama will beat the Tigers in the Georgia Dome in the opener, and North Carolina or Wake Forest will win the ACC.'

Gadsden, no, I don't think bad behavior by one person justifies the same bad behavior by another.
I was merely replying to girlygirl's investigative reporting, which is half bogus and the other half stretched to make a really long list. I called her out on it, plain and simple. I also said that Clemson fans typically do things like that when they are called on problems happening right now in their own house.
I stand by it.

SangareeCrew:
"People like IslandGirl and tigerbdog will berate you and call you a loser because you have freely chosen to back the University of South Carolina. According to Clemson fans, nothing ever, ever happens at Clemson. They have all day to post a bunch of half truths and an artificially extended list of USC's "problems", but won't even acknowledge that this player is admitting guilt in a case where a woman was assaulted by a man. That is a little more serious that underage beer drinking, in my opinion."
Thanks for putting words in my mouth that I never said. I am 100% sure you don't know what my opinion on any of those issues are as we have never even discussed them.
I didn't call you a loser EVER.
And FYI I don't have all day to post... but apparently you do. As a matter of fact someone else even had to bring your post to my attention since I do not take the time to daily post on the message boards.
Maybe you should stop yourself before you post anymore "half truths". Because I am pretty sure I do not look down on anyone who has "freely chosen to back the University of South Carolina" since the man I am going to marry in less than a month is a USC fan.
What I do have a problem with is people like you who stereotype fans and think all fans are exactly the same. Which obviously you do since you just ASSUMED things about me.

Oh Derrick -- please take us off your wimpy schedule. We don't want to be associated with girlbeaters and gangrapers anymore. It will also improve carolina's schedule and make clemson's even worse. While we are at it, let's cut Dung County out of the state all together--it does not belong in SC. Tell me again--what top 20 teams did you beat last year? SCar beat two top ten teams and they sucked--can you beat that?
And Ga has always owned clemson--even in the decade when clemson was busy cheating their way to the tainted title of '81. Ga does not want to play the cow turds. They have a real NC without the taint of cheat all over it. Congrats on doing nothing and being so proud of it. Cheater and wifebeater.

Islandgirl.............I am very sorry to have riled you all up.
I was talking to BotanyIsland, in response to girlygirl's post. I accidentally put your two names together.....honestly, I never meant to put your name in there and I apologize for the error. My post should have referred to "girlygirl" when I accidentally used your name. I didn't mean to do that and I apologize.
I do not post very often on this site. I definately would never use your name unless replying to something you said. I apologize for putting BotanyIsland and girlygirl together earlier.
I know that all team's fans are not alike. I know that both USC and Clemson have buttholes as fans, and nice people as fans. I was trying to tell BotanyIsland that people like girlygirl (who posted the long list above) would call her a loser, not that all Clemson fans were. There are plenty of USC fans that will call Clemson fans "losers" for no reason as well.

Sorry that I went off since it was just a misunderstanding then. I see how you could get those mixed up, and I really appriecate you posting back.
I do agree that the posting of long lists are uncalled for, and I for one just glaze over that kinda thing because I find it pointless (and don't have the time to verify that kind of information.

I personally agree with a lot of what BotanyIsland said:
"The Clemson football player referenced in the article should receive a second chance in life. People make mistakes, and if you can repent for them, you deserve a chance to prove yourself as a good person in this country. Still, it reflects poorly on Clemson to let him on the team after what is basically an admission of guilt. Playing football is a priveledge and should be viewed as such."

pti is not an admission of guilt. some people need to grow up. this is a serious issue and as fans we shouldn't resort to name calling and childish antics, it just makes you look silly and you lose all credibility.
once all the information is provided to the proper people, an informed and proper decision will be made regarding McDaniel's status. until then, lets just wait for the season to kick off!

again, JF proves my point ......... it's just TOO easy .
and just for the record ..... I am fan of either school nor did I attend a university in this state.
I moved to this state 5 years ago and became immediately aware that 90% of the USC fans I met were wannabes. You wannabe champions, you wannabe a top ranked academic university ...... none of which has been remotely achievable in your past or will be in your future. The people I have met that represent themselves as fans that disappear as their season wears on ....
Why dont you concentrate on having your athletes NOT wannabe felons first - I see that as a great place to start. Sorry if you dont like what I have to say... merely an outsiders view.
Oh btw ..... I used google for my arrest records search ... I used the same search criteria for the Tigers. While I did not find the same type of comprehensive list- they are not without sin. The gamecocks list was simply overwhelming and just to much to pass up !
Enjoy your football seasons while you can as you are all undefeated - it will change soon.

GirlyGirl, you probably make some poor guy's life a living hell. I just hope you do not have any children. Can you imagine if GirlyGirl was your mom??? They must be proud.
I wonder what GirlGirl's attitude would be if it was her daughter that was assaulted. If a Carolina football player beat up my daughter getting kicked off the football team would be the least of his worries.
But I guess hitting girls is a normal occurrence in GirlyGirl's life. Sad..

I agree with charleston_grown that PTI is not an admission of guilt. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying he might not be guilty, but I don't think everyone that chooses pti is guilty. They just don't have faith that the system will make the right decision, and they don't want to take that chance.

JF, SC hasn't been in TOP 25 since lord knows when, so to use that stat is pointless. Your point against quality competition? For one, it doesn't matter who you play if your are consistently the whipping boy of your conference. Secondly, we can't control if other programs in our conf. have dips in their talent levels or progress from year to year. I think a lot of people believe FSU, Miami, VT, BC, WF along with a few other schools are on the up and up and the ACC will return to be a top tier conference. You may not know that once upon a time the SEC wasn't so prosperous, but ALL conferences have experienced these ebbs and flows. For those who say Clemson cheated during their national championship year or any surrounding years, I promise you Clemson wasn't doing anything different than anyone else at the time, however with the spotlight, everyone seems to focus and notice more. SC fans, you get yours and we'll get ours. As long as Clemson owns you guys, then what our record is against ANY other school who SC plays does not matter. Clemson has held their own against Georgia and several other SEC schools, but the bottom line is Clemson owns USC, bar none. As long as this is the case, SC fans shouldn't be talking about who we play or who you play, because if we're beating you, then likely we would be winning more than you in the SEC. Clemson has the school, campus and the image to be more of an SEC type school than SC will EVER have, and SC fans can't nor ever will even though they're in the SEC, they are not SEC calibur. The SEC would probably move at the drop of a dime if they could drop SC and add Clemson. We're better academically and would compete better at any and all levels compared to SC. We know that wont happen because too many teams in the SEC enjoy having a cupcake like SC on their schedule every year. SC fans, prepare to remain the red-headed step child you've always been... Also, anyone know if SOS was a red-headed step-child? just curious...

girlygirl----fret not about the typo's or accusations by these gamecock fans. If any of them actually did attend that craphole in Columbia, they received their degree from an second-rate academic institution and they are well aware of it....so whichever university you did attend, it is undoubtedly ranked higher than usc.
If you'd like, I'll go and pull up some of THEIR posts from past history and we can all get a terrific laugh at the atrocious spelling and punctuation---which is generally indicative of their educational background. In point of fact, I find it rather difficult to believe any gamecock supporter would mention spelling and punctuation to any other poster.
By posting the truth (however long and detailed), what you did was ruffle some mite infested feathers which accompany their minute poultry brains and you've thus further enhanced their understandable feelings of inferiority . Their reaction was typical and predictable.
And don't worry.. They know the academic truth about usc as well as the pathetic history of their football program

I anxiously await to see the responses that continue to bash Carolina and not address the issue at hand.
And didn't Clemson suspend two FIFTH year seniors for their last game due to academics? GirlyGirl forgot that one I guess. Selective memory is a wonderful thing.

McDaniel chose PTI because it appeared he didn't have many options. It is apparent that "something" happened that early morning, however no one knows and its one persons word against another. The young woman had marks that showed signs of distress, which the police, (who last time I checked aren't investigators) said couldn't be self-inflicted. Now the young woman could have not allowed for PTI and decided to move along with pressing charges, but she isn't so you have to think about it from that perspective to... Maybe she was second guessing herself and the information she provided. Long story short, both parties accepted his ability to take PTI, and perhaps DM thought that was the best intervention seeing as he knows he was likely in the wrong to an extent. No one knows, but for everyone here to call him a woman beater, if you weren't there then don't act like you "know" all the facts. It seems a little fishy from both parties, but it doesn't sound like DM did everything the young woman claimed, so you have to question the truth of all sides. SC fans, leave this by the fence, we're going to beat you with or without DM, and Clemson's dominance over your beloved little cocks will continue....

Fantasy5
Wow you are really a good example of an obnoxious fan. Clemson has owned USC recently in in general. Why becuase they had better teams many times and other times USC was just plain bad. I was not singing the praises of USC.
Still seems a pity Clemson takes so much pride in beating USC that they ignore their own shortcomings, underperfoming talent, and average coaching.
Quality of competion doesn't matter to you? As long as you have a good conference record? No wonder Bowden has stayed on as coach.
Comparing the ACC to SEC is ridiculous the ACC has four AP National Chamionships. The SEC has 13 by my count. Over four times as many. The SEC teams had five teams in the top 20 last year, the ACC one.
How many top five teams did Clemson play play year? South Carolina beat Georgia and played National Champions LSU fairly well. Clemson lost to all the final ranked AP opponents they played. USC played four teams finishing in the AP top 20. The ACC record in bowl games speaks for itself. Maybe the teams that used to be strong and joined the ACC are losing talent becuase of the level of competition.
By the way I used like Clemson, but Bowden, and behavior by my relatives a few of whom are really obnoxious Clemson fans, like you turned me off on the Tigers. I think Spurrier is a good coach and runs his teams well. SEC football is much more exciting and interesting than the ACC. I am not a fan who wants to hate the opponent.
You say I shouldn't talk about Clemson schedule as " we are beating you"? Do you play for the Tigers? What is your position, do you start? As for me I am not a player so you didn't beat me. Maybe you should try and find something more fullfilling to tie your self esteem to than a football team.
This year Clemson has scheduled a grand total of ZERO teams ranking in the AP preseason top 20. South Carolina plays three teams ranked in the top 6, and four teams in the top 20. That to me is more intersting than watching Clemson wading through another garbage schedule.
