LADSON — Christopher Cutlip looked out his kitchen window Monday morning and spotted a masked man pacing back and forth behind the EZ Shop on Ladson Road.

Minutes later, Dorchester County Deputy Jason Will looked out the same window with Cutlip, and the masked man was soon in handcuffs.

Cutlip had returned to his home in the Oakmont subdivision about 9 a.m. after taking his wife to work. He called for deputies when he saw the man behind the convenience store, he said.

Will and Lt. William Bense carefully approached the man near a trash bin, where he stood wearing sunglasses, a baseball cap and a T-shirt wrapped around his face, Bense said.

"We had a real good idea what he was planning to do," Bense said.

He said he found a 9 mm pistol in the waistband of the man's pants. The man also had a straw with cocaine residue on it, sheriff's 1st Sgt. Michael Miller said.

Clarence James, 21, of Goose Creek, is charged with attempted armed robbery, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and possession of drug paraphernalia, Miller said.

Employees inside the convenience store were shaken when they learned of the arrest, Bense said. He credited Cutlip.

"All the thanks need to go to him," Bense said.

"So many times, people will see something like that and not call."

In an unrelated case early Saturday, Deputies Steve Bova and Eric Amos nabbed a man suspected of robbing two men near Brindis restaurant and nightclub on Ashley Phosphate Road, Miller said.

The deputies were in the area about 2:30 a.m. when they saw the men running. The men told the deputies that they were robbed at gunpoint, Miller said. He said the deputies chased down the suspect.

Justin Bryan, 28, of Dorchester Manor Boulevard, is charged with armed robbery, Miller said.

James and Bryan remained behind bars on Wednesday, authorities said.

"It's outstanding police work," Miller said of both arrests.

i am delighted that they caught the culprits.
imagine that contemplating on the when and how to rob the store.
i am proud of the citizen that did the right thing by calling the police.
you are a hero.
we need more people like this man that's willing to do the right thing at the right time.

to the thieving culprits you both should have gotten a job instead of robbing the good people like me who works very damn hard for their money...

but that doesn’t matter now because with much hope i pray that they give you both some hard azz time.

particularly the dude that looks like a CAMEL(bryan).
i hate thieves!

These men used or were going to use a pistol in their crime.
This wasn't their first crime, I guarantee you.
Now is the time to lock them away from us for
a very very long time.

These two have proven that they refuse to live by the rules
that the rest of us have agreed to live by.
So they must be removed from our society.
They did this to themselves, so no whining about
rehabilitation, etc.

If allowed to go free, these two will offend again.

Bryan looks kind of like Homer Simpson. I'm glad that the citizen was alert and willing to call the cops.
I am just shocked that a man with a mask and one with a t-shirt wrapped around his face gave them a pretty good idea what was going to happen. I seriously doubt that they were trying to stay warm.

Oh, sorry, masked man and t-shirt face are one and the same.
Good morning everyone, I think I need to wake up more before I post.

I don't know for sure but I'm thinking that you probably shouldn't provide information such as this to the public (as in on this board). This is confidential information your posting.

Basically, if I, as someone off the street, can't come into your work place and get this information than it probably is confidential. That is always a good rule of thumb to go by......just a word of caution is all.

I realize that the economy may be down, but it just does not make sense to me why someone feels it is necessary to commit a crime for a few dollars and end up prison.

Maybe Bryan is on a vicious Karma reincarnation wheel:

Camel thief > camel > camel thief > camel > thief that LOOKS like a camel.

Might explain why at 28 he looks like he is 58...just a thought...:)
