Surf & Sand: Lowcountry beaches

A sight to see

Chris Costa competed in the Masters division during the 2007 Governor’s Cup.

Even if you’ve never played football, you probably can appreciate a good 30-yard touchdown pass when you see one.

The same goes for surfing.

There are those of us who can’t carry a surfboard, much less ride one, but that doesn’t mean we can’t stand in awe of those who can.

South Carolina’s best surfers, along with a smattering from Florida, Georgia and North Carolina, will claim the waves at the Washout on Folly Beach Aug. 9-10 for the Governor’s Cup of Surfing. If you’re not surfing the competition, we highly suggest that you grab your sunscreen and head for the beach to watch.

Good times are guaranteed.

The contest, now in its 20th year, was dubbed the S.C. Governor’s Cup five years ago and also serves as the yearly state championship for the Eastern Surfing Association. It is the fifth ESA Southern South Carolina District contest of the 2008 season.

WHAT: S.C. Governor’s Cup of Surfing

WHERE: The Washout, Folly Beach WHEN: Aug. 9-10. Competition starts at 8 a.m. each day. You must check in with Beach Marshall Steve Fletcher at his station one half hour before the start of your heat.

COST: First division is $20 and each additional division is $5; Free for spectators.

ENTRY: The registration deadline was Aug. 3, but late entries will be accepted on the beach during the event. Space is limited and there will be late fees of $5 for the first event and $1 for each additional event.

FOR MORE INFORMATION: Go online at http://ssc.surfesa.org or call the contest hotline at 843-588-9856.

Lifeguard teams earn bragging rights

The Post and Courier

Mount Pleasant and Charleston lifeguard teams earned annual bragging rights in the 11th annual S.C. Recreation and Parks Association Lifeguard Competition.

The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department’s Park West team won first place. On the team were Marcus Gardner, Julia Long, Victor Long and Lyndse Melhorn.

Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission teams claimed second and third places.

The competition, held June 26 at the R.L. Jones Center Pool and Folly Beach County Park, included a brick-tow relay, 50-yard swim sprint, submerged deep-water rescue with CPR, 500- yard swim and 100-yard relay at the pool.

About 10 four-member teams trained for weeks for the event. To qualify, all participants were required to be certified through an accredited agency, and teams needed to include at least one male and one female.
