Tired of slow-trolling menhaden for hours on end? Too bad.

Feeling a bit queasy from the rough seas? Want to call it a day and head in early? Not a chance.

There’s just no room for quitters during a king mackerel tournament. After dropping quite a few hundred dollars on entry fees, fuel and tackle, you are, as they say, “in it to win it.”

Tournaments can be a real blast, no doubt about it. But if you’re thinking about entering or joining a crew for the first time, make no mistake: You won’t be just “fun fishing.” You’re not out there to catch whatever’s biting. You’re looking for that one fish, that one 35-pounder that will put you on the leader board.

And when the fishing gets slow, you’ve got to stick to your guns, keep putting out fresh baits, keep hoping for that smoker king to attack your spread. This is when a good crew can make all the difference. You’ve got to

have anglers on board who know how to keep the lines untangled and fight and gaff a fish. But even more importantly, they need to know how to keep it fun, even when the pressure’s on.

You’ll find many such anglers on the water this month during the Key West Boats Fishing for Miracles Tournament. The annual charitable event, now in its 15th year, is a popular, homegrown competition that pits small-boat weekend warriors against seasoned tournament anglers and bluewater crews.
