The Charleston Animal Society's new shelter is "packed" after authorities seized 74 animals this week from two locations. A dog owner was found guilty Friday on 29 charges related to animal neglect in one of two cases that increased the shelter's population by 43 dogs and 31 fowl. The influx has burdened the Remount Road facility, which is "packed as we can be," said Charlie Karesh, president of the society's board of directors. Both situations were reported to animal control after neighbors com-plained of the stench, which is more prominent in the heat of summer. The dogs are all hunting breeds and include puppies. Many of the adult hounds are emaciated. Their rib cages and hip bones are prominent under their fur. Some have fur missing in areas that appear to be raw and sore. Some of their toenails are so long that they are starting to curl at the tips, making walking difficult. The first group of 19 dogs was taken into protective custody Monday from 3716 Greenland Road on Johns Island. The pens were covered with feces and moldy bread, and the water was filthy, a report stated. Deputies cited the owner, Carl Gadsden, 56, for disorderly conduct. A report stated an irate Gadsden started to hose out the dirty pens and refused to stop when told to. He was also issued a total of 38 citations for ill treatment of animals and failure to vaccinate the pets. Magistrate Mary Holmes found Gadsden guilty Friday of disorderly conduct, 19 charges of ill treatment of animals and 10 charges of failing to vaccinate, the clerk's office said. Nine other animal control citations were dismissed. Holmes ordered Gadsden to pay the society $1,480 in restitution and fined him a total of $4,000. He also lost custody of the dogs. They will be evaluated before they become available for adoption. On Wednesday, animal control found 23 hound dogs, one pit bull mix and 31 chickens in pens at 1861 Belgrade Ave. in Charleston. Flies and gnats swarmed in the feces-covered dog pens, a report said. Owner Jack Dedrie Salisberry, 35, said the dogs had to be moved to the Belgrade Avenue property quickly because of a lost hunting club lease, according to the report. Citations for no proof of rabies shots and ill treatment of animals were issued to Salisberry; William Kyle Kinard, 30, of Goose Creek; and Bryan Corduno Owens, 18, of Wadmalaw Island, the report stated. Salisberry relinquished ownership of the chickens and society staff said three of the hens have since died. The future of the hunting dogs will be determined by a magistrate court judge Wednesday.

I seriously doubt there will be any kind words for either of these individuals (the only word I could come up with, for none are men) but PLEASE use more than your words. A donation of just $5.00 would help towards the care of the massive influx of animals. I personally would also be glad to donate a loaf of stale bread, small easily knocked over bowl of water, and one crate for all of the previous keepers to stay in.

stand828,Your comments are going to reflect a LOT of posters thoughts here today. You hit the nail on the head! THESE PEOPLE(I won't even call them humans)are PURE SLIME! I, like you would love to the the judge in this case because I would give them the same treatment they gave these poor little animals.Lock them up and let them live like that for a few days! What these slime bags don't seem to get is these little animals also have a heart!,they feel pain!just like humans---and the sad part is even SCUM like this is loved unconditionally by these little creatures.I used to have a little dog,and he was treated much better than some people. He ruled my house, but he died from heart failure and not from anything I did! I spent thousands of dollars to try and get him better because he was the only thing that loved me and never asked anything in return!PLEASE PUNISH these bastards to the fullest!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lady,I have a lot of old towels and sheets that I am going to donate and and I think I am going to get some people I work with to help me buy a big bag of food! All of us who have posted so far apparently love animals. If each person would give one thing,I think it would help.

Jeff - Nah... Our Gadsden can be annoying but still lovable like the rest of us!
Southern and Lady -
A friend of mine had a dog dumped in her yard. She can't afford it but instantly fell in love. I've been paying all vet bills (including heart worm preventive) for her. I figure this way I know where my money is going and there is one less wonderful dog being abused by some creep. And she got one happy, lovable, appreciative dog out of it.

This breaks my heart! I feel restitution should be monetary and public service. We as a society feel that a slap on the wrist and a $ amount makes everything okay. He should have to go to the animal shelter and help clean cages, poop patrol, feed and walk the animals. Unfortunately, $4,000 dollars would not even come close to covering the expense of feeding, vaccinating, boarding, flea meds and paying for staff. O-yea...and that money for the fine doesn't even go to the animal shelter. SHAME ON THEM! I pray they treat their human love ones better!

Just like children....if you are not going to properly care for them then don't have them.
These innocent animals don't ask for much. What they give back in return is more reward than a person could ask for.
Slime? No, lower more like rat snot.

Sorry, there should be a comma after lower.

Having worked in animal rescue for years the #1 need is cash to cover medical supplies, crates, etc. Rescues know what they need and when they need it. You CAN give any amount via a PAYPAL donation if you go to the "Donate" page and click on "Make a Donation"
However, a donation of *anything* is better than nothing, so here is the Wish List from the website. I'm sure they will be overwhelmed with phone calls, so perhaps a news update from P&C will be posted to assist with any other donations that may be needed.
If you think you have NOTHING to donate, please donate your TIME. There will need to be dogs walked, played with, assisted with socializing, and consider the possibility of fostering.

LadyRenegade, thank you for the information. Hopefully there will be an outpouring of gifts for these poor animals.
Even with a tight economy, I'm sure most everyone has old towels and could afford a small bag of food or some shampoo.

I need to make a minor correction so what I said is not misunderstood, a Paypal donation can be done TODAY, right NOW which makes the money available. There is still a form that can be filled out and you can mail in a check (even though they have $25 as the lowest amount, they'll be happy with anything that you can offer.) Or I'm sure you can drop off a $5 or $10 when you drop off the towels, toys or dog food. :)
BTW, please let not forget that while CAS has had this massive newsworthy influx, at all times there is CAS, Doc Williams SPCA, Pethelpers and many other rescue organizations that need help, even vet offices (you might be amazed how many animals get dropped off and never picked up.) Share what you can when you can. For all they give, animals have no voice to ask for so little.

"For all they give, animals have no voice to ask for so little."
That's the factor that keeps me up at night. Even a toddler can tell someone he's been hurt. Animals can't; they are at our mercy.
ForPnC, bless your compassionate heart. You're a good person.
