Air Expo prompts some road closings

The Charleston Wings Over Charleston Air Expo this weekend is expected to draw about 150,000 people on Saturday for over 70 air demonstrations and ground activities.

In addition to the popular F-16 Fighting Falcons flown by the Thunderbirds, spectators will see a C-17 demonstration and air drop of 48 82nd Airborne troop members, a Japanese dive bomber and the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team.

While pilots train in preparation for the weekend events, the Charleston County Aviation Authority Police Department will close South Aviation Avenue between Remount Road and International Blvd. for the following time periods:

Today from 2:15 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. Aviation Avenue to Midland Park Road.

Friday from 1:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aviation Avenue to Midland Park Road.

Saturday from 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Aviation Avenue to Midland Park Road.

In addition to these closures, the Charleston International Airport police will be closing parts of International Boulevard.

Motorists who normally use Aviation Ave. are encouraged to take an alternate route while the road is closed. Persons reporting to work in the areas affected by the closure will be required to show proper identification to law enforcement.
