Cainhoy playground named for Carson

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, April 23, 2008

The playground at Cainhoy Elementary/Middle School soon will boast a new moniker in honor of a dedicated school volunteer.

Prompted by more than 10 teachers and community members who attended a Tuesday night school board meeting, the Berkeley school board unanimously voted to name the school's playground after volunteer Eddie Carson.

Carson died roughly nine months ago but was an integral part of the Cainhoy, Wando and Huger community before then.

At the rural school, Carson founded Cainhoy's Tiger Store, which rewarded students with prizes for good behavior, led the school's 50th anniversary celebration and served as chairman of the School Improvement Council.

The Cainhoy playground will become the only Berkeley school playground named in someone's honor, district officials said.
