BEHIND BARS

Thursday, April 17, 2008

Thanks to everyone who has been writing in for best cocktails in the city. We have a new batch of reader suggested winners to tell you about this week.

Carey from West Ashley tells Behind Bars that the best margaritas in town hands down are made at the Boathouse restaurant. It is their use of Tezon Tequila that really does it for her.

Anderson from Mount Pleasant says that the bloody mary at Vickery's are hands-down winner. This writer has never been a particular fan of Clamato juice. However, Anderson tells us that is what he lives for every Sunday morning.

Bailey from Edisto Beach tells Behind Bars that High Cotton's espresso martini is by far the best that she has ever had. It is of note that High Cotton was the original restaurant that placed the espresso martini on the map. The bar staff makes theirs in simple fashion, using fresh espresso made right in front of you, stoli vanilla and kahlua shaken and served in a chilled martini glass with a rim of hot cocoa.

Infusion trends

With as many kitchens taking an entire new approach to food preparations these days with foams etc, it is no surprise that bartenders are paying attention to the trend. Fascinating infusions are coming to the forefront of the bartending game. This leads to our next question for you our readers: What is the strangest drink that you have run across?

Stoli

As if Stoli Peachik (Peach) and Stoli Razberi (Raspberry) were not enough, later this month, Stoli Vodka will launch its newest flavor: "Blackberi." Five area restaurants are being asked to formulate their perfect recipe using the new flavor. We will publish these over the next two weeks.

Conch Sunday

Conch, the newest addition to Folly Beach located at 11 Center St., is featuring live reggae and island music on the roof top every Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. It is the perfect post-beach party. For more details, e-mail mike@charlestoncrabhouse.com.

Creekside

Happy hour in Mount Pleasant just got more exciting, as Creek Side Bar and Grill located at 508-B Mill St. next to Shem Creek Bar and Grill offers $3 house liquors, $3.50 house wines, and $2 domestics from 4 to 7 p.m. Mon.-Fri. For details on the establishment's entertainment lineup and great appetizer specials, log onto www.creeksidebargrill.com

Hall of Fame

You know when you walk in to your favorite bar or club and you automatically recognize that one bar fly that seems to always be there? We want to add that person to preview's newly founded "Bar Patron Hall of Fame." You know, like "Norm Peterson" from Cheers fame. Write in each week and send us a picture and a little funny story about why your choice should be placed in the hall of fame. We'll contact the bar patron, and see if they'll let us publish a short profile.

Get to work Charleston, and help us spot your favorites.
