Works by Rana Jordahl, including 'Scouting The Shoreline,' which is pictured here, can be seen at The Lowcountry Artists Gallery during April.

The Lowcountry Artists Gallery is presenting the exhibit, "Loosening Up," a series of new paintings by Rana Jordahl. The exhibit will be on display throughout this month.

"Loosening Up" is a collection of textural paintings, created with only a palette knife. Jordahl's experimentation with her palette knife and her play with light and color has resulted in rich Lowcountry landscapes with a slight impressionistic and contemporary edge.

Jordahl says that the inspiration for her one-woman show is the wonderful, uninhibited feeling she experiences when incorporating her knife and a generous application of paint to create bold, intuitive strokes.

"I love the movement and texture of the paint and the way it lends a fresh, modern twist to the conventional subject matter of cerulean skies and green-gold marsh grasses," Jordahl says. "My work with brushes had begun to feel laborious, and I was looking for new ideas. The palette knife encouraged a looseness in form and color mixing and a freedom that is exciting and different. It's hard to believe all of this can come from the edge and flat of one knife."

Primarily self-taught with a past career as an advertising executive in Atlanta, this Iowa native delights in exploring her new Charleston home with its historically significant architecture, scenic ocean vistas and rich colors of the marshes. Peering out her Daniel Island window has netted viewers a wonderful show, including lush florals and engaging nocturnes not often seen in the palette knife.

Visit the Lowcountry Artists Gallery at 148 East Bay St. to see some of Jordahl's pieces, or call 577-9295 for more information.

Award announced

Coleman Fine Art has announced the Mary Whyte Art Educators Award to be given to a high school art teacher who has exhibited excellence in teaching. To be given annually, the award will be accompanied by a $1,000 cash prize and is designed to highlight a visual art teacher in the Charleston school district area who has demonstrated superior commitment to his or her students and craft.

About the new award, artist Mary Whyte said, "Many teachers have a profound impact on their students' artistic development. In an art-centered community like Charleston, it is important to note the source of our cultural inspiration. The goal of this award is to recognize the outstanding work that our art teachers do throughout the year."

Submissions are accepted either by mail or e-mail. All entries are to include a biography of the nominee, 15 to 25 examples of high school student projects (either individual or group) and six examples of the teacher's own work. All entrants also must include a brief answer to the following questions: 1) What makes the nominee a candidate for this award? 2) What special art projects has the nominee implemented, and what has been the impact these efforts have made on the students or community? 3) How else is the nominee involved in the arts? Please submit only digital or photocopies of work, as submissions will not be returned. A panel of judges will select the recipient, with the award to be presented by Mary Whyte at a special event on May 21 at Coleman Fine Art in Charleston.

All nominations must be submitted no later than May 1, 2008, and must be mailed to: Coleman Fine Art, 79 Church St., Charleston, SC 29401. For more information about the award and nominations, visit the gallery Web site at www.colemanfineart.com or call 853-7000.

Abstract painting class

North Charleston Cultural Arts Department instructor Jeff Poole is offering a free introductory class to his "Abstract Painting for Teens and Adults" series. Everyone is invited to see what the six-week course is all about. Join in on a large group painting, and then each student will complete two or three paintings of their own in a condensed version of the six-week course to follow, beginning April 26. The classes will take place at the Rhodes Art Center on the former North Charleston Naval Base from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free introductory class will take place the same place and time, but on Saturday. All those interested can register by April 11.

A little 'Imagination'

Shana Bryan, ImaginationGYM trainer, will teach children to exercise their imagination via an interactive, guided imagination story. The program brings out the creativity in a child by expanding their imagination and uses exercises like writing and drawing to develop a child's self-esteem, decision-making skills, focus and goal achievement. Included in the class fee is an activity pack with a CD and activity book. This eight-week session will begin April 19, and will take place at the North Charleston Cultural & Civic Center's second-floor classroom on the former Charleston Naval Base. The classes cost $130, and registration ends one week before the first class.
