James Island Christian School coach arrested

Charleston County Sheriff's deputies arrested a volunteer softball coach from James Island Christian School Wednesday after a female student accused him of fondling her, affidavits state.

Rohan C. Lewis, 38, of Hanahan is charged with grabbing the girl's chest and kissing her while inside at the school's gymnasium on Tuesday, the affidavit states. Deputies arrested Lewis the following night, after the girl spoke to investigators. Deputies said he was her coach.

Lewis has been involved in sports at James Island Christian for the past few years, said the school's headmaster, Bill Smith. He was on the payroll as a junior varsity basketball coach from November through February, but had been in an unpaid position more recently.

"The individual in question was a volunteer coach," Smith said. "He has been forbidden to be on this campus indefinitely."

Lewis was scheduled to appear in Charleston County bond court tonight on a charge of lewd act on a minor.

The school on 15 Cross Creek Drive, near Folly Road and Maybank Highway, was founded in 1994 as a ministry of James Island Christian Church, according to the school's Web site. About 300 students are enrolled there in grades four through 12.
