NAACP rips 'uncaring attitude'
Group calls on Cook to apologize or resign over comments

Wednesday, April 9, 2008
The Charleston NAACP called for school board Vice Chairwoman Nancy Cook to apologize or resign Tuesday for suggesting that unfit parents should be sterilized.
Melissa Haneline The Post and Courier
Charleston NAACP branch President Dot Scott said school board Vice Chairwoman Nancy Cook should undergo sensitivity training.
After meeting with Cook about her controversial comment over the weekend, the group said she should enroll in sensitivity and diversity training, and urged other members of the county school board to condemn her comment. "Ms. Cook's remarks show an arrogant and uncaring attitude toward single parents and their children that could easily have a negative impact on the funding, staffing and equipping of their schools," NAACP branch President Dot Scott said during a press conference. "Her words are especially offensive in the American South, where poor women were once involuntarily sterilized and often, with prejudice, labeled as unfit mothers because of their color or economic class." Cook declined to comment Tuesday.
Cook is running for Charleston County Council as a Republican. Her campaign spokesman Sean DiSomma said Cook doesn't have anything to apologize for and already has clarified her comments. DiSomma e-mailed reporters the same statement Cook released last week, with an additional comment: "Regardless of what Ms. Scott thinks or wants, my life has been and will continue to be one of public service for citizens of all ages, races, and sexes," wrote Cook, who is a licensed counselor and runs a homeless shelter for women, children and homeless veterans.

Nancy Cook
The NAACP became involved in this issue because it's one of equity, said the Rev. Joe Darby, vice president of the Charleston branch. People sometimes erroneously think that the NAACP is involved in matters tied only to black people, he said. Scott said the statements were offensive to anyone who has respect for human dignity, regardless of their race. In a press release, the state and national offices of the NAACP supported the Charleston branch's position on Cook's comments. Sen. Robert Ford, D-Charleston, didn't attend the news conference but released a statement asking the county and state Republican parties to denounce Cook's candidacy. "The Republican Party should be embarrassed to have one of its candidates take such a preposterous stand," he said. Charleston County Republican Party Chairwoman Lin Bennett said she didn't hear Cook's comment in context. She declined a request for an interview.
Darby, Scott and Ford should worry about how to resolve the issue of teen pregnancy and "stop wasting their time going on television to grab headlines and trying to crucify a loyal public servant who has actually tackled this issue head on," DiSomma wrote in the same e-mail he sent to reporters Tuesday. If Cook is concerned about the issue of teen pregnancy, Scott said, she should form a group to talk about the problem rather than talk about it on the radio. Her comment was made Thursday on WTMA-AM's "Morning Buzz with Richard Todd" during a discussion about poor graduation rates in the nation's 50 biggest cities. Charleston schools Superintendent Nancy McGinley declined a request for an interview Tuesday, as did school board Chairman Hillery Douglas. Cook's opponent in the County Council race, veteran GOP Councilman Curtis Bostic, also declined an interview request.
School board member Gregg Meyers said he understood the Charleston NAACP's concerns. He wouldn't say whether he thought Cook should resign, saying that was a decision only she could make. "We all make mistakes," he said, "and the best course is to admit it when you made a mistake."
Controversial comment
School board Vice Chairwoman Nancy Cook's comment on WTMA-AM last week:
"We're not standing up as people and saying we've had enough of that. We're not paying for another baby, maybe one baby, but after that, we're taking the baby. And maybe you get sterilized. I know that sounds kind of extreme and radical, but we're in times to where — think about America. When is it OK for America not to be No. 1? When did we get out of that?"

I just can't help but wonder if an African-American person made the same comment as Nancy Cook, would the NAACP be so quick to come to his/her aid to help promote "equity."

Nancy Cook you've got my vote! As long as we continue to tip-toe around these issues and paying for other people's bad choices - we will continue down the path we're on. I admire Ms. Cook for saying what she believes and not sugar coating it.

Where was the NAACP when Obamas pastor was making racist, anti-american comments? They were nowhere to be found, because they agree with his brand of racism.
What she said isn't racism, it is common sense. True racism is perpetuated by the NAACP.

No one would be upset if there wasn't some truth to it. The NAACP wouldn't be upset if they didn't feel that it was somehow more pertinent to colored people.

I can't stand Nancy Cook and couldn't believe she is a republican but what she said wasn't racist, insensitive or uncaring. Someone should make the teenage mothers squirm and let them know it isn't accepted in society, just theirs! How many of them every make it off welfare?

There's no need for the woman to be punished for making a
sensible suggestion. I also don't recall her addressing the
comments against colored people, so what's the NAACP doing
here? Nancy directed those comments against low income and
irresponsible parents.

While I may not agree with her statement as a public figure, what she is talking about is certainly a problem. I have had students with not one baby but three. A student who has these responsibilities very rarely can be a stellar student. Marginal at best. Attendance becomes a large issue.
It isn't fair to the schools and teachers because of the pressure we are under to educate everyone and meet high standards. How can we if a segment is out on maternity leave or with sick babies?
Should she take it back or apologize? Depends on whether or not she wants to stay where she is. NAACP won't give up. And it doesn't matter that the real focus should be in the black families.

The NAACP would do well to maybe poll the feelings of the tax paying, freeloader supporting public before they go and make stupid stances like this.
In reality, I don't think forced sterilization is an option. There are too many variables that need to be considered. SOMETHING, however, needs to be done.
Since none of the groups that are working for the advancement of particular groups of people (of any race) are doing anything, at least Nancy Cook brought the situation to light and started a conversation.
Just curious, what solutions has the NAACP offered to solve this problem?

Dot Scott needs to address what the real problems are with the African American community and stop blaming "white people". It's people like her that makes the NAACP have no credibility whatsoever.

The NAACP is a bunch of idiots, and they just bring things down on the to African-American population. If the shoe fits then wear it. Seems to me that the person who feels so hard to defend themselves without being accused is guilty. It is time that people take responsibility for their actions and stop thinking that the government should take care of them. Or in the other case, you and me the working hard tax payer.

I just don't understand how we came to be in such a state - when I was in high school, they didn't allow single parent teen agers to be in school with other students - you had to go finish school at a night school - allowing children to be in school with two and three babies is just rewarding negative behavior. I agree with Ms. Cook, one welfare baby is enough - be responsible for yourself and don't get knocked up. It's too easy to go to the clinic and get free birth control - if you want to be a slut and sleep around.
Posted by Hey_U_Guys on April 9, 2008 at 7:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I think that mothers on welfare should have to get the depo shot every three months. REGARDLESS OF RACE. If you don't show up on that third month for your birth control, you don't get your check. Generations upon generations are born into the welfare bracket. It's getting out of hand. I also agree about the unfit mothers being sterilized.
Why does the NAACP always have to get involved. Holy Crap, how many people have them on speed dial?! All it takes is for one minority to get offended at what she said, and low and behold, the NAACP rides into town. Who do the whites call when they get offended? Oh wait, we don't call in the re-enforcements.
The truth is the truth. You can't argue with the facts, even though a lot of people try! Sorry if the black community was offended by what Nancy Cook said, but you can't always call in the calvary. No, it seems you can.

Early say; NAACP talks out both sides of mouth.
Did NAACP once even hinted toward what pastor Wright (wrong)said you know why, because they believe it and so does most blacks that follow the NAACP verified by defending the actions by a "cultural difference" I think the "cultural difference" is seen every day in this paper and papers across the states. NAACP is OK with any infraction against other races except their own. This statement blows me away;
"People sometimes erroneously think that the NAACP is involved in matters tied only to black people, he said."
I have never, ever seen the NAACP stand up for other ethnic groups in the fight, they have maybe mentioned it, had a couple other ethnic groups with them in a protest march but never followed through with it.
I don't think the NAACP does any good for the many great black folks out there!!!!
She did not make a racial statement and if the statement she made wasn't true, the NAACP would not be involved. We have to get a grip on mothers having babies for cash. You cannot tell any young mother, Go out and get a job and work you tail off or, have 4 babies and everything will be taken care of. This IS NOT a color thing, it's all races!

I couldn't agree with Ms. Cook any more than I do right now. I am tired of working my butt of to support my family and the families of those unwilling to support themselves. I stand behind her wholeheartedly in what she said. Nothing was aimed at any particular race. The NAACP needs to pick it's battles a little more carefully. Many people already see them as a group of troublemakers and instigators. This isn't helping their image!

Involuntary sterilization is wrong. It may be time that we, the people and government, stop assuaging our conscience by simply keeping these government subsidized children alive physically while condemning these young, innocent children to lives of poverty and hardship by leaving them with a caregiver that demonstrates a lack of ability and understanding to rear a child by have another that requires our treasure. Everyone can make a serious mistake and most often recover with a little assistance. However, if a mother with one child, both supported by us, has another child requiring further support, then that deliberate act, not accident, should require that we take these children and give them to fellow citizens who do want children and will support them. At that point, we can put the mother off the dole. I have not figured out yet how to deal with the father that has no honor.

The NAACP has no basis for calling for Ms. Cook's resignation (although I dislike Ms. Cook). Ms. Cook is an elected official, the voters will sort this out not Dot Scott or the rev. Derby. theronce, I agree with you in that this is a very touchy subject. Something needs to be done but I fear that any attempt to develop and enforce a mandatory sterilization program would be a complete failure.
I have friends that say a sterilization program should be based on an IQ test (survival of the fittest). The problem there is that many think IQ tests are flawed and after you weed out those with the lower IQs over a few generations, you then have a group of people that have a higher IQ but are now at the bottom of the list. Do they become the next target?
Our Federal and State governments have proven time and time again that they would not be able to regulate something as complex as a sterilization program. I would not want a Nancy Polosi (sp?) or a David Duke to have any input in to how the program should be administered, yet that’s what we’d end up with.
The only real answer is education over generations. Change the mindset of the public that allowed these conditions to propagate in the first place. I have relatives that are elated when a 16 year old unmarried niece of mine becomes pregnant. The thought of a new grandchild thrills them. It didn’t used to be this way. The pregnancy of an unmarried daughter used to bring shame on the family and you did everything within your power to try and make sure your daughter did not become pregnant and your son didn’t get someone pregnant. If it did occur, marriage was usually the result. Not anymore. Have a baby, get food stamps, finish high school, live with mom and dad forever with all of your government subsidies is now the norm.
We have to remember that the child is not at fault. Forcing a newborn in to poverty by withdrawing all aid from the mom is not something I want to be responsible for. Maybe one answer is mandatory adoption. I’ve never really looked in to adoption, but I always hear stories about well adjusted families having to work through all types of red tape and bureaucracy to adopt a baby. It doesn’t sound like there is a shortage of willing adoptees.
My best answer at this point: Take away government subsidized housing and food stamps and welfare from those that are physically and mentally able to work. If they have children, take those away and put them up for adoption. Provide social services and financial support only to those that cannot work due to real physical or mental disabilities. Shortage of jobs? Keep the prisoners in their cells and pay people to pick up trash on the highway and in our parks. Kick out the illegal immigrants and let our unemployed Americans fill those jobs.
It’s easy to say “mandatory sterilization” but it would be almost impossible to implement without resorting to a Hitler like program.

The NAACP is a RACIST org' that needs to be disbanded. Period. Mrs. Cook was right on with her comments. Personally, if a woman has more than 1 child while on welfare then she needs to be 'fixed'. There are such things as birth controle and if they refuse to use any of the many choices available why should tax payers have to foot their bill? While this may not be the norm, I have actually met a woman who had 2 kids and wanted to get pregnant again so her assistance check would be that much more. It really sickened me to hear that. Lets also think about the types of values that the children from these situations learn. The cycle needs to be broken. NOW

Ms. Cook spoke her mind, about time someone did. We really need to look at the children in these situations, IT ISN'T FAIR TO THEM, they are the ones that suffer in these situations. This isn't a racial remark, it applies to all, even men, they are as guilty as women. Having babies left and right and not taking care of a single one. Just because they aren't the ones that got pregnant, doesn't mean they shouldn't be held responsible as well. Here is to responsible mothers and fathers who take care of their kids and no how to say when they have populated this world enough!!!!

I think Dot Scott should either apologize or resign. Her stereotypical racist views against black people, as seen by her assumption that Cook's comments were aimed at black people, render her incapable of furthering the cause of the NAACP.

Interesting. Some of you on this very board reproach NAACP for their seemingly racists stances and yet turn around and refer to black folk as 'COLORED'. For those of you who seem so inclined to speak of an entire race in such derogatory terms, you are no different than those you oppose.
For the record, I certainly empathize with Ms. Cook’s sentiments. It is frustrating to see the continued rise in out-of-wedlock births and the manner in which our current govt. seems to encourage the vicious cycle monetarily and with benefits that the rest of us work hard to pay for. I’m sure that Ms. Cook’s remarks were born out of the same frustration. Upon further consideration I find her remarks to be rather foolish and not viable. Especially in light of her current council seat campaign. Furthermore the federal Supreme Court has ruled involuntary sterilization to be unconstitutional and I’m sure forced contraceptives would be seen in the same light, at least legally. The same goes with just arbitrarily ‘taking’ the children away. Most of you out there complain about your rising taxes, just where do you think the money is going to come from when all of these children end up in foster care, group homes and orphanages? In this country there are already tens of thousands of black babies and children in ‘the system’ with no hope of adoption. There aren’t enough foster homes for these kids so many of them stay institutionalized until the age of 18 where they are given for the most part a suitcase, a few hundred dollars and phone numbers of counselors who will try to help them to adjust to the world that they were turned out to. Black families as a whole cannot or will not absorb through adoption that many kids and white people would rather go to Russia, China or South/Central America to adopt babies/children than adopt the Black ones that are already here. I’m just waiting for some of you out there to start mandating abortion like China. That country forces sterilization, abortions & contraception at gunpoint.

Welcome back to the 1920-1930s era of Eugenics. Fraulein Cook will be sitting beside her master Adolf at dinner this evening to discuss the problem with why many people do not see Germany as number one anymore and when that became OK.
Wake up folks. This woman has the mentality of a uber-conservative NAZI. Forced sterilization is about as retarded and big-government, big brother as you can get...oops, there goes all of someone's human rights and liberties. It is people like this that have set the area back so far for so long. Whether sterilization or forced relocation of any kids past the first, it is unethical and a call to a dark day from the past in a foreign land (although NAZI Germany learned their Eugenic tendencies from us nice Americans).

NOT EVERYONE IS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE THE PERFECT MARRIAGE AND LIFE. FIRST OF ALL, EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES AND LEARNS FROM THEM. I AM A MAJOR TAX PAYER. SINGLE PARENTS ON THE SYSTEM HAVE TO WORK OR GO TO SCHOOL AND BE INVOLVED IN MANY PROGRAMS TO GET ASSISTANCE. THEY DON'T JUST SIT AROUND, HAVE KIDS AND COLLECT A CHECK...AS SO SUGGESTED. THEY ONLY GET STATE PROVIDED DAY CARE SERVICES FOR TWO YEARS PER CHILD. PERIOD! WORKING AND GOING TO SCHOOL WHILE TAKING CARE OF CHILDREN IS HARD. NOT TO MENTION THE MENTAL STRESS THESE YOUNG WOMEN ARE LIVING WITH DAILY IS ENOUGH TO MAKE ANYONE CRAZY. IT STARTS WITH THE FACT THAT IN SC IT TAKES BOTH PARENTS TO WORK THESE DAYS TO MAKE A DECENT LIVING AND THAT LEAVES THESE TEENAGERS UNSUPERVISED WITH THE TIME ALONE TO MAKE BABIES. OUR STATE MINIMUM WAGE IS A JOKE.
JUST SHOWING CHILDREN THE "PATH" DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK...SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO TAKE THEM BY THE HAND AND WALK WITH THEM ON THAT PATH, BUT YOU CANT DO THAT IF YOU HAVE TO WORK TO LIVE. CONTINUATION:
Instead of lashing out, a logical & comprehensive revamping of the system as it stands should be implemented. PREVENTION is the key. It will take time, but if you cut off the money after the first child then the incentive to NOT have additional children will develop on its own. Cut off food stamps. Only allow for health care for the child itself not the parent. Give enforceable time limits on monetary benefits to include public housing. Before getting any assistance name the father of the child and submit to paternity testing. Enforce child support enforcement laws already on the books.
Furthermore stop letting extreme far right conservatives, the uber Christians highjack every attempt at teaching these children the truth about sex, STDs and pregnancy. Emphasize abstinence as the only 100% prevention but also be real about consequences and prevention in regards to the behaviors they are already exhibiting. We also need to rip into the far left liberals who want to coddle these people and offer excuses for this behavior. For far too long liberals have not owned up to their responsibility in this crisis and they’ve also held the level of expectations lower and lower for minority children and adults. And as a result our society is reaping what was sown.
I reiterate, Nancy Cook’s remarks were born out of frustration. I get that. I even share in it. But this rally call to rip out ‘colored’ peoples reproductive organs is one, not going to happen and two is truly an act of futility.

I agree with all most everyone on this thread. The ones who think that Ms.Cook is wrong then let them take care of these children or keep their mouths shut. I for one am tired of taking care of children that are not mine. Gas prices and food prices are so out of hand I don't understand how the working class can take care of their families let alone someone else's. Where is it going to stop!!!! Children having children.

As a retired military soldier of twenty-four years (Army) a leader should know how to express there concerns without use improper language. How would you feel if your children took on the same attitude when expressing there views with others using the same language they got from Mom or Dad? If we continue to reward bad behavior what type of examples we as adults and parents would be setting for our children. Let’s get real! The more we support issues like this the more our children will continue to behavior in the manners that they do because they are so use to hearing adults disrespect each other. The following are core ethical values that we sometime forgot:
Trustworthiness
Be honest • Don’t deceive, cheat or steal • Be reliable — do what you say you’ll do • Have the courage to do the right thing • Build a good reputation • Be loyal — stand by your family, friends and country
Respect
Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule • Be tolerant of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone • Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements
Responsibility
Do what you are supposed to do • Persevere: keep on trying! • Always do your best • Use self-control • Be self-disciplined • Think before you act — consider the consequences • Be accountable for your choices
Fairness
Play by the rules • Take turns and share • Be open-minded; listen to others • Don’t take advantage of others • Don’t blame others carelessly
Caring
Be kind • Be compassionate and show you care • Express gratitude • Forgive others • Help people in need
Citizenship
Do your share to make your school and community better • Cooperate • Get involved in community affairs • Stay informed; vote • Be a good neighbor • Obey laws and rules • Respect authority • Protect the environment

Cook's comments were racist. The NAACP is on their job. But what is really troubling is that not only is Cook's comments racist but the majority if not all of these comments are racist. Just as troubling is that I work with you racists, shop at WalMart with you, and ride the bus with you. It is no wonder the difficulty crossing over and befriending you. Your attitudes are as attitudes of slavery times. It is time to put all this bull behind us. There are bigger fish to fry, global warming, the economy, China's increasing power, and of course education in America. These problems are not going away, nor will white America be able to solve them alone. We are all going to have to pull in the same direction if we as a nation, can expect to endure. Say this with me, "Yes it is me oh Lord, standing in the need of prayer." and let's get to work.

Cleary it's the NAACP making the racist presumptions here. Nowhere in Ms. Cook's statement does she direct her comment to a particular race. Who say's she's not talking about white single mothers? I think she is talking about ALL single mothers who take advantage of the "system."
I'm a big believer in helping those who are in real need; I'm not in favor of the government (taxpayer) supporting what has become and "accepted" lifestyle. If you're going to have children, you must be able to support them --- why on earth is that a novel concept?

Well said ColdBeer & katrenavantassle.
The seriousness of the problem does not warrant such a drastic solution. To advocate such a stance is to be incredibly callous to the value of the human rights of the individual.
That said, being a parent imposes a huge responsibility. I certainly don't want to contribute to a system that rewards the wrong behavior. Welfare needs reform, and simple rules can be applied to decide who gets what. Why this is such a mess is beyond me.

thomaskn: Why dont your read this again: "We're not standing up as people and saying we've had enough of that. We're not paying for another baby, maybe one baby, but after that, we're taking the baby. And maybe you get sterilized. I know that sounds kind of extreme and radical, but we're in times to where — think about America. When is it OK for America not to be No. 1? When did we get out of that?"
NO WHERE in there is a racist comment. I only see that she is saying that people are having babies that can't afford it. Your comment is completely ignorant.
As for slavery times, I am POSITIVE that you are too young to remember back 200 years ago for what they really went through. So STOP USING the "S" word. It is so overused. No one cares for what happened back then, but GET OVER IT!!!
NAACP is just like the KKK. Ignorant!! They need to use their energy on bigger issues.

All of these posts that are targeting unwed Black women who are having babies need to realize that there are a lot more white women out there having babies out of wedlock than any other group.

I applaud Ms. Cook and am sorry that her realistic attitude - not uncaring attitude - has caused her professional life, and I imagine her personal life, such grief. My opinion, as apparently it is many other of the responders, is that we - as a MAJORITY - are sick and tired of seeing the words "freedom", "rights", and "liberty" being streched to the "nth" degree JUST to make something seem "ok" or "justified". I am certain that our founding forefathers are just rolling in their graves screaming "NO.... WE DIDN'T MEAN IT THAT WAY"..... And the fact of the matter is, we have had enough of "justifications" to be irresponsible! What scares me is that people just don't get that!!! The irony is that the freedoms and rights that made our county so GREAT are going to be the same freedoms and rights that make us "not so GREAT".. Don't get me wrong - I still love being an American and I am proud of our military and proud of our country. But, I don't like "just getting by" - I like to be the BEST at whatever I do! And her comments parallel my thoughts - when did we become a joke?

Hey folks...which would be more expensive, taking care of the children in the current welfare system or Cook's demented philosophy?
Let us see, we know the current system, but what would hers call for:
1. Having to have an enforcement presence to ensure 2nd any child past number one is removed.
2. Unless you are going to kill the kid you have to have somewhere for them to be placed.
3. Once placed, they must have all their needs taken care of.
4. This continues with the need for more administrative positions, more care-takers, and more enforcement personnel.
Or-
For sterilization you need:
1. Enforcement officers...you know, the "Gonad Gestapo"
2. Doctors and hospitals to perform the procedure. I am assuming hysterectomies.
3. Medication for the physical effects of forced sterilization that will later arise as early onset menopause.
Yep, my uber-conservative friends who support Cook, her method of NAZI extremism will save you loads...as the government gets "smaller". Yeah, right, think it through to completion and you will easily see the stupidity in her.

I am all for helping someone in need as long as they are willing to help themselves as well. The point of welfare is to use it to help you get to a point where you don't need it anymore. GET AN EDUCATION, GET A JOB, and GET A CONDOM...it's not rocket science, just common courtesy to all hard working tax-payers. The system is abused and we continue to hand these people free grocery money so they can hop in their Lexus and drive to the Grocery store. I'm tired of it. It's a vicious cycle that will never end unless people stop defending their right to breed however many children they want and instead discipline them for their irresponsible actions. This is not a small problem, it's huge..the money spent on people who abuse the system could be spent on people who actually need it, use it and get off. The worst part of all of it, is that the children we are referring to, are learning how to do the same...and so it continues...

White America? Black America? What the hell ever happened to just plain, old AMERICA?
Why don't the blacks and whites work (here we go...say it with me...) TOGETHER to solve problems? Why is everything a racial issue?
If you were offended by her comments, go cry about it! I sure as hell get offended with the majority of the comments made about "white americans" and how we control the country and blah blah blah. If you are concerned about white america controlling the country, get off your asses and VOTE. The majority of Charleston is black. Yet, when voting time comes along, where is the majority of the population?
Teenage pregnancy is not only a black problem. Teenage pregnancy has no race.
And yes, unfit parents should not be able to make babies all they want and expect us to pay for them. I scrape by trying to feed my ONE child. How is it fair that I have to work doubly hard to pay for all the other babies out there?! GET A JOB, or even two like the rest of us!

thomaskn,
I've reread Nancy Cook's comments and all of the post on here. Can you please point out where the racist remarks are made? I believe that every post on here is directed at anyone abusing the social welfare systems... anyone not acting in a responsible manner. No one has singled out any one race.
As for the rest of your comments:
I don't ride the bus. My biggest fear in riding the bus is that I will be the victim of a racist attack. That is not a fear I conjured up in my head. The daily headlines and statistics support my feelings.
The global climate is cyclical. We WILL have a global warming period and we WILL have another ice age. They happened long before man walked the Earth and they will continue to happen long after we are all gone. There is nothing you or I can do to stop that. Yes, we should all try and minimize any damage we do to the planet, but stopping global warming is not only NOT a top priority, it's impossible.
As for your god and the need of prayer... to each his own. Personally, I'd rather spend my time taking real action. To think that everyone on this planet agrees with your religious beliefs is just as bad as the worst forms of racism.
The next time you hop on that bus and head to Wal-Mart, buy a mirror. You need to take a close look in one...

Thomaskn, your comments are ignorant and ooze with hatred. You actually try to camouflage it with some nonsense about other issues which makes me laugh.

Archdude ... It is not like she is getting a NAZI organization together and preparing to sterilize right away.
It basically is a comment saying "STOP HAVING BABIES IF YOU CANT AFFORD IT." I work in the medical field. For example, I will have patients come in that drive a Lexus or a BMW with all sort of jewelry and their hair colored and styled that I could never afford. Then they hand the front office a Medicaid card!! So we are paying for their children while they get to live the UNEMPLOYED lifestyle. This was daily several times a day that I saw this.
What am I doing wrong? WORKING?? Not right whatsoever. Her comments may have been unethical, but not racial. At least she is woman enough to say how she feels publicly.
What do we do? Comment back and forth on here. Why don't we get a support group together in person and see what we can do?? Doubt many will agree to that.

NANCY COOK only wants to be the head of the "Gonad Gestapo"...the secret police organization formed to handle forced sterilization. They wear pinkish, flesh colored outfits that zip up and a hat that resembles a mix between a baseball cap and a dunce cap. Their logo is a naked woman whose body is twisted into a swastika. Their main spokesperson is from the Congo.

Do I think people should get something for nothing, NO! I also agree her comments were not racial (extremely unethical) but many of the posts on here are loaded with racist comments.
A fix for the welfare family will have to come from a massive overhaul and better vigilance by those charged with service monitoring and maintenance. Perhaps if we paid the workers processing the welfare claims better than those getting welfare...

Does anyone notice a pattern here? With few exceptions, comments such as those made by Ms. Cook will invariably motivate an advocacy group to demand that the unenlightened commenter issue an apology, tender their resignation, be required to sensitivity training, etc. for expressing their "offensive" comments. This popular tactic, at once, has the effect of branding the commenter as offensive, while the media assists in turning the matter into a referendum on the person making the comments rather than one on the behavior the commenter was calling into question. According to the article, Ms. Cook has the requisite background and experience to know something about the subject on which she was commenting. Ms. Cook's obvious frustration with the behavior she was criticizing (a sentiment likely shared by a considerable portion of her constituency) could have been issued with more tact. The fact remains however, that the important issues Ms. Cook raised will continue to be ignored while special interests and their accomplices in the media further establish the right of the nameless individuals she was critical of to not be offended. Free speech has become only free for some. For the politically incorrect, the cost of speaking is an almost certain attack on their character. Thank God for those who are willing to pay such a price!

ChasCarolinaGirl - you are way angry!
Some enlightenment?
In the early 1900's, the United States had a eugenics program (http://abcnews.go.com/onair/2020/2020_00...). With that program, the U.S. was attempting to perfect the gene pool. The hopeful outcomes were that of a society without crime, mental illness, and homelessness. The idea was that if the degenerates of society were kept from having children that society's problems would disappear.
This occurrence is a part of our past. It will always be part of our history. Although in the United States we look at this as something that did not really happen. This is not the type of history that is taught to children in school. We do, however, teach about the inhumanities of the Nazis. The connection is not made though that some of the tactics that the Nazis used were taken from United States practice (Piotrowski, 2000).
The past shows us what we are capable of doing now and in the future. The question is then, can it happen again here and abroad. For other countries throughout the world it is still occurring. A eugenics program just ended in *apan in 1996. Sweden and Finland both had forced sterilization up until the 1970's, and Peru's population control program started in 1995 (http://cwfa.org/library/life/1998-12-29_...). For the United States, the question is not so clear. When this was occurring, the country's mindset was positive toward this. Right now, the human rights component is such that we are not set to do this again in the near future. However, with the support of the public, anything is a possibility. Some of the state laws--those stated that anyone who was labeled feebleminded could be sterilized without consent--are still on the books. The Supreme Court case from 1927 still stands as well (http://abcnews.go.com/onair/2020/2020_00...).
Just something to think about.

Early: your assessment of predominantly Black churches is extremely bigoted, prejudicial and wholly ignorant. You see a man on a video spewing nonsense and you have the GALL to say "every time I pass a black church I cringe because they are preaching like Obama's preacher, and I work with these folks and I go to Wal-Mart and see these folks. I think this is a more true statement than the one you proposed."
Well you can certainly kiss my big toe!
Just because you don’t see a plethora of Black pastors pontificating in front of a news camera denouncing Rev. Wright, doesn’t mean that they aren’t doing so in the pulpit. Instead on giving out 45 second news bites, most Black pastors and their congregations are running soup kitchens, after-school programs, health fairs, fund-raisers for college scholarships, transporting elderly and the infirm to medical appointments, etc.
I’m sure there are some pastors out there spewing hate and ignorance and some of their parishioners lapping up the kool aid. But the majority of churches headed and/or mostly attended by Blacks does not subscribe to that nonsense and do far more within their communities than they seek credit for.
I consider your statement to be asinine and you being ugly for saying it.

Likewise, our community is oozing w/ hatred and mistrust between the races. What if we could leave the race baiters and white supremacists out of the mix; might we benefit from a no-holds barred and spirited forum? Otherwise we will continue to allow open wounds to fester and mistrust to get even more entrenched.

I am frustrated as well….Yet I fear knee-jerk reactions more! It is a very slippery slope when we start discussing forced sterilizations.
Who does the choosing?
Who is put on the “list”? My disabled child, because she may have a child with an ambulatory disability? Or the woman who could pass along a genetic disorder, the obese, the ugly or someone with a mental disorder, only the minorities or could we base it on I.Q.’s?
Very scary stuff! And not to mention it would be the women who are subjected to this process, not the men.
We all know that our system is broken, we know that there will always be people who take advantage, but when Ms. Cook uses terms like sterilization and I see so many in support of her words…man, I start wondering what century and what country I am a citizen of.

If people just kill babies b/c they dont want them, what is wrong with sterilizing them after they have had so many abortions? You may be surprised about how many use it as birth control. Its disgusting, selfish and very sad.
No, there is no way of choosing, but SOMETHING needs to be done somehow someway. It really does.
I would rather much sterilization be more of an option than abortions used for birth control. Even if that were an option, which I doubt fingers would be pointed to see who should be sterilized.

The ability to speak our mind is our right under the Freedom of Speech written in our Constitution. Imagine being too frightened by the possible consequences of speaking out to do so. Ms Cook was not afraid to speak out. Now there are those who want to hang her and others who admire her. I also do not understand what role the NAACP believes they have. In her statements she did not point her finger to any specific race. In my option it is the NAACP who is pointing their finger when they decided to become involved . This should not be made into a racial issue. It is a problem that all of us need to deal with. It will not just go away if we continue to look the other way. We all need to ask what we all can do to better educate our youth so they will not fall into the same scenario and have to depend on handouts and welfare in the future.

Invite the media to the front steps on 75 Calhoun Street. Joe Darby could hold Ms. Cook down on the ground, while Dot Scott would grab one of Cook's fat legs, then bend it until there are five little piggies fully inserted into her large facial orifice.

Who the hell cares if she is Jewish...her ideology is NAZI inspired. Just because she may be Jewish does not mean she can't think like a NAZI.
Good grief, what they hell does her ancestry or religion have to do with it anyway? It is not like her ancestry or religion makes her say the idiotic things she does...that is a cop out.

mooseman...where the hello did that come from? How about if someone took your tongue and inserted it up your fanny, where by the way I am told there is room for a 2 bedroom apt.?

It is frequently and often said in private, but no one, no one, in public life has the courage, and financial independence, to talk about the aggregate drain on our societal resources by a 70% illegitimacy rate among African-Americans.
I wonder if the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, or any of the so-called Black Liberation theologians, has ever addressed THAT and, if they have, found a way to blame this too on Europeans, Hispanics, Asians, Jews or the United States.

I agree that by the NAACP jumping on this and saying the comments are racist when, in fact, no race was mentioned by Ms. Cook, they are the ones that are turning the comment around and making blacks look bad. They are the ones that are making the assumption that it is only blacks that are unfit parents that use and abuse the welfare system. They are the ones I feel owe me an apology, especially since they feel I am not competent enough to speak, think, and act on my own behalf. They cripple blacks everywhere with their, "we need someone to look out for us" mentality.
Come on Dot, let's tackle the real issues that plague society as a whole and quit going after the next big headline!

The P&C poll further shows the problem with the area...80% think nothing should be done regarding her foul mouth and stupid ideology. Yep, let us let her keep going and propagating an ideology of sterilization...our kids can learn so much from that. You know, if you don't like the way someone is doing something, commit pre-emptive murder so they can not have offspring. She is an idiot who should not have anything to do with a public school system as her entire existence is detrimental to education (only an uneducated imbecile would say her words).
I do not care what the "interpretation" or "translation" is to some folks. The direct denotation is there, all other connotations can be rationalized based upon your beliefs. If you look at only the words, you will find she is an idiot.
Again, as a white male I find it and the support she has disgusting. Granted, the same folks that support her on here would totally try to crucify her if she had been black and they thought she was talking about the forced sterilization of whites.
Too bad, welfare has no ethnic or racial boundaries. Folks, if you want to fix it you have to go deep into the government and solve the problem. An unethical topical antiseptic will not stop the infection that has taken hold in the soul.

Thomas1776 what is your point?? And by the way, What is your REAL name so everyone can look you up.... Are you her opponent in the Charleston Co Council Race... Seems like you sure want her business on the street.....
Anyway, I have not always been a fan of hers, but I think that her work with the homeless shelters and her voice on the school board have given her a decent record.

OldSalt and others that don't believe that we talk about this issue-
My church, among some others, does talk about the issue of the high percentage of blacks (not African-Americans or colored people) that are born out of wedlock. And we do preach abstinence.

eyfigueroa, I was being sarcastic to thomaskn's comment above that one to show how stupid his comment truly was. In other word, you take the comments of a few individuals and label all others by that.

Some time ago, I ran into an old girlfriend that I hadn't seen in some time. Her conversation had not changed in years; she literally began talking about the same stuff we discussed since our last meeting years earlier. It was like time stood still in her world.
Charleston is just like that old girlfriend. During my travels, I have lived in or spent time in numerous cities in this country; LA, Chicago, DC, Hawaii, etc. I always keep tabs on whats going on back at home. No other city, large or small, manages to get their britches up in a bunch over stupid comments the way Charleston does. The blacks and whites in Charleston yet refuse to get on the same page. Black folks brand everything as racist even if it isn't, and white folks are just as unlikely to admit discriminatory practices or connotations even when obvious, while assuming that all blacks are far to sensitive.
Hello Charleston, it's 2008. Can we begin giving each other the benefit of the doubt sometime soon? When can we start considering content before we jump to default contextualizations? As for Ms. Cook, she misspoke in the worst way, and may have even betrayed her personal feelings on the matter with her words. Sorry Ms. Cook, but what you said is what you said. At the same time Ms. Scott, can you honestly tell us that you haven't had enough of the social irresponsibility that is rife in our society? And frankly, what has the NAACP done about any of it?
Is there any hope for this city?

Just curious, how much do these baby mill ladies make, per month, per child? Also, since many seem to be pumping out babies as a source of additional income, shouldn't they be required to obtain a business license? After all, this is a "for profit" enterprise, right?
I am sure that many are legitimately living off of this welfare system and truly love and care for their children. At some point, those folks will turn their situations around and return to the mainstream population.
Then, there are those who will remain in the system for their entire lives. Pumping out more and more babies because they just gotta have that new furniture/TV/SUV/satellite dish/etceteras. These are the ones that need the business license.
Sadly, there is an old joke where the mother has ten kids, all named Billy. When asked what she does if she wants only one specific kid to respond to her call, she replied "then I use their last name.............".

eyfigueroa wrote...
I agree with some of what you say regarding biggoted comments on this thread; however, I completely disagree with your characterization that white people won't adopt these children because they are black.
1-these poor children in the system are not all black
2-color doesn't matter, please note that most internationally adopted kids are of color
3-Domestic adoptions are challenging, ridiculous gov't regulations are often prohibitive. (You can raise your biological child in squallor, but adoptive parents have to pass restrictive fire and health inspections just to mention a few)
4-Too many cases of adoptive parents losing their children because the biological parent changes their mind,or, better yet, "I just heard my old girlfriend had a kid two years ago"
5-Most internationally adopted kids have NO CHANCE in life in their home country. Whereas, in America, even kids in the system have a chance to get out of povery.

Everyone who thinks she should apologize should spend 1 week in any school in North Charleston, or the lower part of N. Charleston leading into downtown, and then they would certainly change the tune they sing so loudly...DISCRIMINATION! HA!!!!- You make your own bed, be ready to lay in it. OUR SCHOOLS SUCK!. There's no two ways about it. White people who live near these areas, and have to send their children to these failing schools have just as much trouble as the Blacks who seem to think they are the only target here. If you have stepped foot inside of any of these schools you would see who the minority is. Give me a break, I have to sacrifice every week to pay for private school for my children because the schools I am given to send my children to are HORRIBLE!. AND I totally blame the lame, maladjusted, lazy (black, white, asian, hispanic) parents of these children that help make our schools so terrible. I grew up on James Island and went to school all the way through High School on the Island- and that was only 15 years ago. Nothing is the same once you cross that $ barrier, since it seems that how the school board and its people set up the schools. The more money thrown around, the better education you can receive--what a rip off for our children. I didnt hear Nancy say only sterilize black people, she made a generalized statement-and I think she was SPOT ON!. I pay for every kid who's parent is on welfare anyway and I dont care what color they are. If you cant pay for your actions, then dont ACT!. A lesson that every person needs to be taught-maybe we wouldnt have so many degenerate children in our society today! GO NANCY!! I dont see Dot Scott actively doing ANYTHING to make ANYTHING, ANY AREA, OR ANY PERSON better, so who is she to make demands. She needs sensitivity and diversity training. I have sat at many a meeting that she was attending, and she is all about how ill treated black people are...woo is me, oh wooo is me!!

This is not directed for the few exceptions of good people helping themselves on welfare, this comment is for those who make a living off the rest of us: Call it racist, call it unethical....but why aren't we doing something about welfare fraud?? They are stealing from us as we speak. As they sit at home, watching tv, yelling at six kids and complaining about how poor they are(but refusing to work)we are busting our behinds to go to work and provide a life for our families, only to finally get tired enough to say something and then be called racist for doing so. The race card is over....racism will never go away...NOT EVERYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH WOMEN BREEDING CHILDREN THAT THEY CANNOT AFFORD AND LIVING OFF TAXPAYER'S MONEY ARE RACIST!! An individual should be labeled as a racist, not a specific "color."

Why does this not surprise me?
With the NAACP anything can racial..
I heard the comment several times and I'm not hearing what they are. I know alot of young people black and white that the comment could have been for.

The citizens of Berkeley, California recently protested and petitioned to have the United States Marine Corps Recruiting Station removed from their city. I am a former Marine and this makes me sick. I personally believe that we should petition to have the NAACP, a racist organization, which has done more harm than good, removed from the City of Charleston. If anyone agrees, let me know and I will get this started immediately.

Sterilization is a good solution and the legislators should get on the ball with it. Send a quick email to your legislators and Congressman today and print a small sign from your computer printer to tape to your car rear window "STERILIZE WELFARE QUEENS" to let people who are anti-welfare know you are too.
