Driver charged in accident, duck deathTuesday, April 8, 2008
A man fleeing the scene of a North Charleston accident with injuries Saturday night hit and killed a duck along the way, authorities said. Orlando James McKenzie, 39, was charged with driving under suspension, failure to render aid and ill treatment of animals, according to police report. A court date is set for April 30. The report said that about 6 p.m., witnesses saw a small silver-colored vehicle flee the scene of a collision at Midland Park and Stall roads, then head into the Hidden Lakes Apartments. The car struck and killed a duck as it was speeding through, the report said. Two victims involved in the collision were taken by EMS to a local hospital, the report stated. |

So, let me get this straight: We have laws that allow hunters to go into the woods and shoot ducks, right? But when a duck comes into our environment and walks in the road and gets hit, the driver can be charged for it?
Don't get me wrong - I am not defending this idiot at all for driving under suspension or for his hit and run. (And for the record, I also have no problem with duck hunting.) But he is charged for hitting a duck? Just a bit ridiculous.

Makes perfect sense to me.
1. He left the scene of an accident (w/ injuries)
2. As he is fleeing the scene of the accident, he takes out a duck.
3. He is driving under suspension.
If he had been driving down the road and killed a duck/deer/dog WITHOUT being in the process of committing the other crimes, it would be a non-issue. Perhaps they were stacking charges, but with what little information that was provided, it sounds like a good charge.
Comparing this situation to hunting is asinine.

They need to pass a BILL that would stop all of these QUACKS from harming our ducks! You can't just put them in an inner city pond on a WING and a prayer and expect them to survive on their own. It'd be a FEATHER in the cap of the city if they enacted such legislation and it certainly would prevent having EGG on their face in the future. Now that Chief WADDLE is no longer the N. Chas Fire Chief, maybe we can get the fire department to help protect the ducks. Something needs to be done before this area goes to the BIRDS!

Coldbeer, they need to have patrol dogs around the pond to snap up any rouge ducks. After a couple of scenes like that, the other ducks would get the message and stay in the pond therefore saving countless other ducks from the perils of this high crime area. I'm surprised more ducks have not been killed by run away villains!

Does the Red Cross teach CPR for ducks? Lord only knows I don't want to hit a duck (or any other animal) and get arrested for "failing to render aid". Does this law also cover squirls?

we're trying to work on re-entry intiatives and the police are acting just plain STUPID!!!!! Who cares about a freaking duck? Get a life! As for the other issues, he should be arrested for running away, COWARD! And the cops wonder why people have no respect for them? Sadly this sort of iodotic police behavior happens all over the world and not just here.

I'm sure the cops were just looking for something else to pin on this guy. Many years ago a friend of mine and I helped a cop apprehend a suspect. In the ruckus I scraped my knuckles on the ground and my friend ripped his jeans. When more officers arrived, they asked us if we wanted them to charge the guy with destruction of personal property and battery. The cop was quite serious, but we just said no, that's ok. At least you got the criminal. Come to find out, that guy escaped from a work detail earlier that morning.

As for the SOB who hit a car and took off, I'm fine with every minor offense they can tack on. I hope the people he hit have uninsured motorist coverage - I would guess that this stellar individual didn't have insurance.
