Sullivan's Island narrows list to 6

A selection committee of Sullivan's Island Town Council narrowed a list of consultants interested in creating a master plan for the beach community's commercial district.

The committee comprised the entire Town Council with the exception of Gerald Kaynard, with John Winchester and Hal Currey of the town's planning commission, and Andy Benke, town administrator. Members voted unanimously Tuesday to interview the top six candidates next month.

After sorting through a list of proposals, these six companies remained (in order as ranked): Woolpert of Ohio, Seamon Whiteside & Associates of Mount Pleasant, Clarion of North Carolina, Stantec of North Charleston, Cole and Russell Architects of Ohio, and the Land Plan Group South Inc. of Mount Pleasant. Councilman Everett Presson, didn't attend the meeting, and Currey missed most of the ranking process.

The consultant would ultimately develop a new plan for the commercial area, about three blocks of Middle Street. It's home to a handful of restaurants, offices and a gas station.

The town will ask the chosen consultants to address parking, traffic safety, the area's appearance and its impact on neighbors.
