New businesses sprouting this spring

Thursday, April 3, 2008

Spring has sprung, and new businesses are blooming across the Lowcountry like Satin Robe azaleas after a fresh April shower. Meanwhile, one long-standing downtown Charleston tobacco retailer is relocating.

--61 Bistro Grill: Bringing downtown flair to West Ashley, noted Chef Thierry Goulard, former owner and operator of Mia's on Savannah Highway and Chez Fish, has opened this French-infused restaurant at 2004 Ashley River Road. Goulard is awaiting a beer and wine license but invites patrons to bring their own bottle or enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or beer. Hours are 5-9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

--King Street Grille: The popular Charleston restaurant and sports bar opened its third area location March 10 at Freshfields Village, a mixed-use commercial center located at the crossroads of Kiawah, Seabrook and Johns islands. The other locations are on the peninsula and in Mount Pleasant.

--Freedom Lawns: Just in time for spring, Joe Grady and Kathleen Smith were awarded a Freedom Lawn franchise for Charleston County in early March. The company uses its own granular organic-based fertilizers. For more information, visit www.freedomlawnsofcharleston.com.

--QueenBee Services: Belina Cannon, formerly with Keller-Williams Real Estate, has launched a new business focusing on interior construction cleanup, move-outs, home staging and contract residential cleaning services in Charleston.

--Homewood Suites Charleston Airport/Convention Center: The upscale all-suites brand by Hilton will open at 5048 International Blvd. in June and feature such amenities as free in-suite high-speed hard-wired and wireless Internet access and free grocery shopping services.

--The Smoking Lamp: Charleston's oldest smoke shop is moving from 189 East Bay St. to 401-B King St., in the space previously occupied by Cereality.

I love seeing all the new business coming to town. My favorite so far isn't on the list - The Mutual Fund Store. It is an independent investment advisory in Mount Pleasant with a radio program on every Saturday around 10 on 94.3.
