Franco's Place

Thursday, April 3, 2008

'O taste and see that the Lord is good ... ," touts Psalms 34:8, the phrase etched on a wall at Franco's Place in North Charleston.

Indeed, Courage, Honor, Family, Love, Home, Smile and Hope all receive special treatment, the words inscribed between painted grape leaves at the restaurant.

Easy to say, Franco's has its heart in the right place.

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and open since November, Franco's makes homemade soups, sandwiches, salads and pastries.

It's a tad difficult to find — across from Red Lobster on Mall Drive, near the Verizon building — but it's a pleasant place with covered outdoor seating.

Franco's recommends its reuben ($6.49), sufficiently creamy and made with corned beef and melted Swiss cheese. The roast pork sandwich ($6.79) comes with a cool, roasted garlic raspberry sauce, the pork almost spilling from thin sourdough. It could benefit from sturdier bread.

Another pair of options: Franco's BLT ($6.29) with 10 — count 'em — 10 slices of bacon, and the Moose ($9), a footlong sandwich on French bread with roast beef, ham, pepperoni, turkey and cheese.

All sandwiches come with an order of tasty kettle-fried chips and a pickle.

Franco's also makes a few hearth-healthy items perfect for spring and summer, such as its cucumber sandwich ($6.49) with sprouts, tomatoes, avocado and cream cheese on whole wheat. Or try the grilled veggie wrap ($5.99), made from sliced zucchini, yellow squash and red bell pepper.

The Tuscan tomato soup ($1.99 cup, $2.99 bowl) is terrific, redolent and chock-full of tomato and butternut squash bites. Salad selections include a fried ravioli dish ($6.99) with bacon, dried cranberries and parmesan cheese.

Service is also top-notch — no joke — extraordinarily friendly and responsive.

We tend to hit Franco's two or three times a week, usually toward the weekend so we can partake in the delicious Bar-B-Q. Even when we've had longer periods between visits, we've been greeted cheerfully by the staff, and Franco has stopped by the table to chat. That's what makes it what it is - a place where, for an hour or so, you're part of the family, over for dinner. My family highly reccomends Franco's Place.

I'm a regular at Franco's, it's a hidden gem! Delicious grilled chicken sandwiches, scrumptious cookies, delectable fudge, and a warm, friendly atmosphere. What else could you ask for?!
