Battery tops Charlotte in exhibition

Staff and wire reports
Thursday, April 3, 2008

State Report

The Charleston Battery posted a 2-1 victory over the Charlotte Eagles (USL2) in a preseason soccer scrimmage at Blackbaud Stadium on Wednesday.

Darren Spicer scored the first goal after 10 minutes for the USL First Division Battery, slotting home neatly from a Mike Richardson cross.

Former UNC Greensboro standout Randi Patterson scored the Battery's second, also in the first half. Patterson won the ball just inside the Charlotte half and finished convincingly after a strong solo run.

The Battery's final preseason matchup is Saturday at 2 p.m. against the Wilmington Hammerheads (USL2) at Blackbaud Stadium.

Football

The Washington Redskins re-signed fullback Nehemiah Broughton.

Broughton, a former Citadel and North Charleston High star, spent the entire 2007 season on injured reserve after tearing an ACL during a spring practice. He spent most of 2006 on the practice squad but was active for the final two games of the season.

Broughton was a seventh-round draft pick in 2005.

Baseball

The Coastal Cougars 15U USSSA competitive travel baseball team will hold tryouts Saturday at 5:45 p.m. on the Hanahan Recreation Department fields.

All existing team members and prospective players and parents should plan to arrive promptly. Pitchers and outfielders are needed. For more information, call 224-8469 or 408-2006.
