Bomb suspect says he did video
Internet film was about how to make bomb detonators
The Post and Courier
Friday, September 28, 2007
One of the men facing federal charges for illegally transporting bomb materials through Goose Creek last month told authorities he filmed a how-to video on making bomb detonators to help Arabic countries defend against American troops and other "infidels." Ahmed Mohamed told authorities that he made the Internet video to "assist those persons in Arabic countries to defend themselves against the infidels invading their countries" and that he "considered American troops, and those military forces fighting with the American military, to be invaders of Arab countries." The admission is one of several new details about the Aug. 4 arrest contained in a recently released federal search warrant application. The 12-minute video was discovered on a laptop computer belonging to Mohamed. Other files on the computer indicated that the video had been posted to the video-sharing web site YouTube under keywords such as "martyrdooms" and "suiciders." While his face is not shown in the video, Mohamed admitted that he made the tape and narrated it. In the video, Mohamed speaks Arabic with an Egyptian accent as he disassembles a remote-controlled toy car. Wearing a white shirt, khaki pants and rubber gloves, Mohamed demonstrates how the toy is built and operated and how far the car can travel via radio frequency from the remote control. "The narrator explains how to convert the vehicle into a detonator," a bomb component, the warrant says. Charleston attorney Lionel Lofton, who had been representing Mohamed since he and Youssef Megahed were transferred to a Tampa-area jail earlier this month, learned Thursday that the Egyptian government decided not to hire him. Lofton said he was not given any details but suspects his proposed budget for the case was too high and that the Egyptian government may seek an attorney in the Tampa area. The warrant also includes an affidavit from Charleston FBI agent Daniel McTavish, who offers a detailed narrative based on investigations from local state and federal law enforcement agencies. A federal judge signed the warrant on Sept. 17, and it was made part of the public court record Tuesday. The warrant seeks to inspect the pair's 2000 Toyota Camry to collect residue of explosive materials and other evidence such as hair, fingerprint and DNA samples. It says the car is located at the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office. Mohamed, 26, and Megahed, 21, who at the time of their arrest were engineering students at the University of South Florida in Tampa, were indicted Aug. 31 on charges of transporting explosives materials without a permit. Mohamed also faces terrorism-related charges tied to the video discovered on his laptop computer. The men, their families and attorneys have offered various explanations about the pair's itinerary, including that the students were on a weekend trip to North Carolina where they planned to celebrate Mohamed's birthday and set off homemade fireworks. They said they stopped in Goose Creek for gas. Berkeley County sheriff's Cpl. Lamar Blakely pulled over the pair along Highway 176 for traveling 60 mph in a 45 mph zone near St. James Avenue. He saw one of the men fumbling with wires from the laptop computer as he pulled up behind the car. When questioned, the men offered inconsistent accounts about their trip. They men agreed to a search of the car where authorities discovered a drill, four PVC pipes containing a mixture of potassium nitrate, kitty litter, a sugar substance, 20 feet of safety fuse cord, a partially full five-gallon container of gasoline and a box of .22-caliber bullets. FBI explosives experts determined that the ingredients in the PVC pipes constituted a "potassium nitrate explosive mixture" that met the definition of an explosive under federal law. The laptop computer's hard drive turned up a treasure trove of bomb-related information. Among the contents was a folder titled "Bomb Shock" containing files on explosives, explosive ingredients and downloaded material from Web sites about explosives. One file, labeled "High-Order Explosives" discussed the makeup and use of TNT and C-4, two military-grade explosives. As the men rode in the back of a police car to the Berkeley County detention center on Aug. 4, they began speaking in Arabic. The conversation was secretly recorded and later translated by an FBI linguist. The captured comments indicate that the two men were attempting to get their stories straight. Megahed wanted to know what Mohamed had told authorities. Mohamed said he told police he "didn't know what was in them" and asked Megahed, "Did you tell them there is something in them?" Megahed answered, "Water." Mohamed then says, "Water! Right? The black water is in the Pepsi." Later, Megahed asks "Did you tell them about the benzene?" (Benzene is a naturally occurring carcinogen found in gasoline.) Mohamed replies, "I have nothing to do with it. I do the fireworks and so ... that is it." On Aug. 6, authorities searched a home where Megahed lived with his family in a gated condominium community near Tampa. There, they discovered a remote-controlled toy boat, still in its box, and a partially dismantled digital watch. The men remain in a Tampa area jail and are scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.

Yeah "home made fire works, good boys,if they were white this wouldn't happen" all the things the dad said about them right after this happened. Everything said should be held against them and their family. Deport the family and send the 2 to a US prison.
"assist those persons in Arabic countries to defend themselves against the infidels invading their countries" and that he "considered American troops, and those military forces fighting with the American military, to be invaders of Arab countries."
AND THERE YOU HAVE IT!

Just think what could of happened if they weren't speeding that night! That's the only reason they got pulled over. Luckily that officer was smart enough to search the car. Kinda scary if you ask me!

These two men are obviously here to study the art of engineering new and more distructive ways to harm Americans. That is treason and should be delt with severely.
I say, "shoot them" and put the damn thing on the internet. Let their people see how we deal with this kind of crap and send the message that we aren't playing around any longer.
Think this is over-reacting? I bet you they'd cut off these two mens' heads and display it on the TV and internet if this had happened in one of the Arabic countries and they were Americans.
Fight fire with fire! Shoot um!

Another pair of ME homicidal liars, these 2 are not engineering students, they were taking an engineering course at the Sami University in FL, which should be shut down! They should be charged and deported as should many more so-called students. We must get serious with our Left Wing Universities that will not track these Jihadist and support any and all things anti-American!

This is our poisoned cycle of existence.

I am glad our local authorities are vindicated. Who gets that lost looking for a WalMart in America?
BTW, to anyone who does defend them or the Pres of Iran or whoever, realize you are all a target to them. Regardless of how liberal or conservative you are. They will not have you fill out a questionnaire before you are blown up.
Be vigilant.

Great job by the police! All those who opposed this search, and called it "profiling", better be glad it happened! If not, it could have been you or one of your loved ones getting blown to pieces. Time to stop defending our enemies and prosecuting those who protect us.

I read most of this same stuff on the Tampa Tribune website last night.
It makes me furious that our government is so PC that we allow people to come into our country to learn better ways in which to kill us.

Geechie, good point bringing up perks.
Back in the 70's when all those Iranians were attending the Citadel, lots of the local girls wanted to date them, because they had nice cars and lots of money.
I don't know if it's true or not, but we were told that they got money from their own government as well as ours to attend school here.
Wonder what these two guys were getting?

I have ONE question --- look at the last line of the article --- why were these guys sent back to Tampa to stay in FL rather than SC? Was it so their "families" could visit the "poor little boys" closer to home? They should be held in SC and not allowed ANY visitors. Period.
I wonder which high profile attorney will take their case -- and likely pro bono.........
Comment to RTC: I remember when the Iranians were "transferred" to The Citadel in the 70's. They appeared almost overnight. It WAS a US govt. sponsored program to help young men from Iran obtain an education after the Shah was overthrown by the Ayatollah. Our government wanted to teach Iranians about democracy & western doctrine so that they could return to Iran and promote democracy --- looks like it worked really well, doesn't it? Iran is now run by a madman.

kerwin, thanks for the info, I couldn't remember the details. I'm just happy to say that I never dated any of them, and I do remember how quickly they were gone.
It's a shame that the government doesn't do the same thing with these "students" we now have living here and enjoying our country's freedoms.

Mohamed replies, "I have nothing to do with it. I do the fireworks and so ... that is it."
This statement causes me great concern. What exactly did he mean? Were they were working with others, and they only had a specific job to do? Were they perhaps meeting up with someone to hand off their "supplies"? If that is the case then where might these others be now?
All speculations on my part, but I am very concerned about all of the unanswered questions.

We need to be careful about screaming for the heads of all visiting Muslims. This is a very slippery slope that could very easily lead us to someplace very dark. I am by no means a PC liberal lover of all things not American. I have more reason to hate Muslims than most Americans but I can also recognize that this kind of hysteria can also lead to us hurting innocent people.

Easy solution,
Nuc just a couple countries over there and see if it doesn't put a end to this crap.
Confiscate all Muslim temporary visa's and export them on a C-130 (lot's of noise and no comfort)along with a good portion of our politicians
Close down our boarders and only allow people who have a right to be here legally access.
Profile the $hit out of them as we did in WWII with the Japanese ,,it is the same situation but now we have no more standup don't F with me Americans, just a lot of bleeding hearts that only represents less than 20% of the population but the squeaky wheel gets the grease
To hell with their oil, get what we need elsewhere and maybe this will force oil companies to allow,,,,and yes I said allow the technology for alternative fuels. Can you image, no fuel purchases from the US,,,those countries would self destruct and beg us for forgiveness.
Early out !!!!!

Forget innocent until proven guilty. All muslims should be either deported back to their country of origin, or placed in a concentration camp for the rest of their lives (for the ones who were born here). We can't risk being nice or politically correct and allow them to live freely in our society.

I wonder which is highest...
1)The Berkeley County storage fee for the impounded car.
2)Lionel Lofton's proposed budget for the case.
3)Andy Savage's bill for initial consultation.
4)What most REAL Americans would pay to see these two grinning bastards and their families shipped back to the Egyptian desert.

All muslims should be suspect and assumed to be dangerous. The only good muslim is a dead muslim. They are not a peace loving religion, regardless of what our politicians say.

I so agree! Our lovely politicians need to wake up before another 9/11 happens. Enough is enough! They can keep their gas and oil - I got a bicycle, and I'm not scared to ride it 30 miles if I have to!

Well, unfortunately Yossarian, innocent people have already been hurt and killed here! Namely 3000+ on 9/11 in the US alone, not too mention the hundreds of thousands who have been blown up around the world by these terrorists. It is time to stop this nonsense. If all the "peaceful" muslims would stand up, turn in and turn on the crackpot extremists, maybe people would take a softer stance. Until that happens, I just can't see trying to distinguish who is for us and who is against us. I value my life more than that-if it hurts some people's feelings to stay alive, so be it! Time for people to take a stand!

Geechie, respectfully submitted and said with no ill will or cynicism, you did miss something in my post. My comment was not intended to be funny, sympathetic, or sarcastic. It is merely an observation and statement of fact. We want to kill Muslims because they killed Westerners. They want to kill Westerners because we've killed Muslims. We killed Muslims because they killed someone aligned with us. They killed those aligned with us because we killed someone aligned with them.
Do you not see the pattern? This is a millennia-old problem being fought with millennia-old tactics. It’s gotten us nowhere and guess where it's going to get us? Nowhere. It is just what I said it was - a poisoned cycle of existence. We kill. They kill. We kill. They kill.
I do not support them, as you have suggested, nor do I support the gratuitous violence so prevalent on both our parts. I do not support anyone who does not view EVERY life as sacred. If you wish to know more about my motivations, you need do nothing more than Google "ahimsa." Again, respectfully and humbly submitted.

To: unknown_username,
It's not a vicious cycle. They will still keep killing us even if we stop defending ourselves. You seem to equate what we are doing with what they are doing. They are the agressors, we are simply defending ourselves with rational force. We probably should end this once and for all, and start dropping hydrogen bombs on their cities. If they know you WILL take out a few million of them, they will think twice about attacking us.
Posted by Kerry on September 28, 2007 at 4:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)
sjmehlhose:
Don't worry, as long as they know there are still enough of us (as evidenced by the comments here) that are willing to kill them, they "will think twice about attacking us".
Everyone in America should do their part to let the Muslims know there are plenty of "infidels" who are very willing and more than able to take them out.

Man. These posts are truly over the top. I am ashamed in many ways to say that I am from Charleston. I am serving in Baghdad right now. This is my third tour in Iraq and over that time I have seen the worst in humanity. If we were to act how many of you are describing then we become no better than the people we are fighting. We must remain vigilant but not become vigilantes.

Looks like I owe the forum a mea culpa...it now sounds like these guys were indeed up to no good.
But remember what separates us from our foe: in America we are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and we have to refrain from trying cases in the media.
From the description of the evidence that was originally released in the few days after their apprehension, there was no basis to assume these individuals were anything other than college kids with homemade fireworks. I am convinced, now that we have more info, that the authorities did an excellent job in handling this. My thanks to them and I hope they will understand my initial skepticism. Keep up the good work!

don't worry Yossarian these people are all text and no trigger, have you heard of any muslims getting "taken out" in America lately? no...
we just need to keep a careful eye on everything they do and say and be patient, they will screw up if they are up to no good and we'll catch most of them
I would happily remove them from this world too if they threatened the life of my family or friends, but there would have to be an actual threat of bodily harm or death before I'd do that... just as with you and others in authority here, it has to be justified
however if we do have another 9/11 here I see nothing wrong with rounding them all up and putting them in retaining camps like we did with the japs, and I think it should be mandatory immediately
buy your favorite gun today and get properly trained, it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it

The hate that fills this forum makes me very sad to be a human. As humans, we are born with the ability to reason. Please use your minds and wait until these men are judged in a court of law, not by a partial story presented by the media. The media is hungry for a sensational story and most people with herd mentality just eat it up. Are you a part of the herd? The hatred towards Muslims that many Americans feel is a product of being manipulated by the media. It is unlikly these men will not get a fair trial, regardless if they are innocent or guilty. I agree we should be vigilent but when our vigilence turns into hate, don't we become terrorists too?
