Ford set to defend title in Senior Azalea golf

Tommy Ford heads the field for the Senior Azalea golf tournament that begins today and continues through Friday at the Country Club of Charleston.

Ford won the 2005 Senior Azalea, which was shortened to 36 holes because of weather, with rounds of 69 and 69, finishing a shot in front of five other players.

The tournament was not played last year because of course renovations.

This year's field of 126 players, 55 and older, features 18 of the country's top 30 senior golfers and 12 of the top 20 super seniors (age 65 and older) according to the Golfweek rankings.

Tee times begin at 7:45 a.m. each day, with the field cut to the low 60 for the final round.

Volleyball

USC Upstate (5-9) posted a 3-1 road win over The Citadel (2-13) at McAlister Field House. The Rifles won, 30-27, 25-30, 30-28 and 30-27. Rachel Sanders had a match-high 25 kills for The Citadel.

Soccer

David Newton scored in the 47th minute to boost host Clemson (3-4-1) to a 1-1 tie with Elon (4-2-2) in a men's match.

at Riggs Field. Justin Wyatt scored for the Phoenix in the 14th minute.
