Wave sweeps by second round

The Post and Courier
Friday, October 26, 2007

Summerville 3, Berkeley 0

SUMMERVILLE — Summerville absorbed Berkeley's best shot and then dealt a few shots of its own.

The Green Wave overcame the Stags in straight sets, 26-24, 25-10, 25-21, in the confines of the Summerville High School mini-gym on Thursday to advance to the third round of the Class AAAA volleyball playoffs.

The Stags finish their season at 10-15, while Summerville (19-4) advances to play James Island at home on Tuesday.

"That first game, (Berkeley) had a tremendous game," Summerville coach Teresa Kendle said. "They were strong at the net, their offense was ... wow. That could have easily gone five (sets) there."

The Stags, clearly the underdog against the Region 8-AAAA co-champ, began the match with a high level of energy and shot out to an 8-4 lead before Kendle called time out.

The break shifted momentum back to the Wave, who tied the game at 17-all en route to a 23-17 lead. The Stags fought back one more time, but Summerville prevailed 26-24 in an extended game.

"That first game, I think that our youthfulness and lack of tournament experience came into play," Kendle said. "We were nervous."

By the second game, the Green Wave took over the pace of the match especially when junior Meredith Mutispaugh was serving. Summerville won 24 points on her serve, including stretches of 10 straight points in the second game and six in a row in the third.

"We were just pumped up — 26-24 was way too close for us," she said. "It would have been much tougher (if they had won the first game). Our conditioning definitely pulled it off tonight."

Mutispaugh led the Wave with 12 assists and had two service winners and four kills. Senior Chelsie Lisenby had nine kills and nine assists. Freshman Elizabeth Miler added eight kills.

Berkeley was led by senior Lauren Harleston, who had nine kills.
