Halloween plans a fright for neighbors

The Post and Courier
Tuesday, October 23, 2007

It was going to be a Halloween party like no other: live music and invitations for adventurous souls willing to test the boundaries of costume and bare skin.

Then, like any good horror story, the ax fell.

The "Skinful Halloween" bash that tempted guests to go "as nude as you dare" in the name of charity has been called off just days before the party was to start.

Organizer Brian King called the effort a monumental headache that simply got out of hand, while area James Island residents are relieved that a potentially R-rated theme party of beer, bands and overnight camping won't unfold nearby.

The event was scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of an isolated old farm at the end of Joe Rivers Road, off Fort Johnson Road, in residential James Island.

King had been holding smaller Halloween bashes for the past 10 years out of his home in nearby Riverland Terrace. But this year, he wanted to go bigger, throwing a $25 per person fundraiser to benefit AIDS orphans in Ghana.

King notified Charleston County officials of his plans, then proceeded to book five music bands and rent an assortment of tents to house the party and contain the noise. Tickets were to be sold at the gate.

Would you be opposed your neighbors throwing a sexy Halloween party?

See the results without voting.

He said it took $26,000 to get the effort going.

But last week, when residents and officials from the town of James Island heard what King was doing, it triggered an uproar akin to a pack of pitchfork-toting villagers chasing Frankenstein's monster.

The "nude as you dare" tag was one concern, but so was the advertised shuttle service from the Buffalo South parking lot on Folly Road into their quiet residential streets.

"They're asking people to wear as few clothes as they can," said Dell Wood neighborhood resident Maryann Gigis. "We shouldn't have something like this in our little neighborhood."

Roy DeHaven, a planning department official for the town of James Island, said the party's theme didn't conform to any James Island regulations, including the prohibition on burlesque shows in residential areas. There was no way the town would issue any permit for the event, he said Monday.

King said the last thing he wanted to do was make anyone angry. He called the party off at the farm site but is making an effort to find an alternate location to revive it.

"If I would have ever known this would have been that much of a disturbance and inconvenience to that neighborhood, I would never have tried this there," he said.

The risque nature of the party's advertising was more of an adult joke than anything that residents should be concerned about, King added. Most of his previous party guests were in the 30- to 50-year-old range.

"All of that stuff has been blown out of proportion," he said. "It's not an orgy. It could not have been as crazy as everyone thinks."

AS nude as you dare. Yeah, so great.
You feel really close to nature when you discard your clothes and feel warm sunshine, fresh air or cool water on the whole of your body.
Being naked outdoors gives you a great sense of freedom.
Being naked in the presence of others is a pleasurable experience, Here are some good sites, such as nudistconnect.com

I think it's illegal to go nude in public until you're so old that your body is no longer attractive. Thats the way it seems when ever I see pictures or stories about nudist vacation resorts and such. Yuck, yuck YUCK!

I understand the outrage. I'd have been outraged as well if it were being held in my community. Nudity and sex have NO place in a residential environment (or any environment except the privacy of your own home)!!!
Aren't we having enough problems in our communities without introducing unrestrained sex, drugs, alcohol and loud ungodly music to our children???

Sounds like it would have been fun!

If someone wants to have a naked halloween party let them. If someone has a personal problem with that, they don't have to show up.

LOL... some of you pompus cave dwellers are really something. You automatically assume "unrestrained sex, drugs, alcohol and loud ungodly music to our children". Where did you read that??? Besides music in cars is loud.. As for your children... keep them locked up like you are and stay at home and scare little children!
I'm quite sure it will be cold enough for total nudity.. and the age group 30 to 50 may come scantily clothed. But right down the road in the summer at Folly you can see that every day.
I'm not saying I support this, what I am saying is GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT before you open your virtual mouths and make asses of yourselves.
For the record I am a sixty one year old island resident, native in fact and even attend church on occasion and wouldnt go to this event... Too cold, I'd be embarrased..lol...
Skeeter did we go to school together??? lol

I think it would have been a great event! I don't understand the problems. It was to start at 10 pm, so what's the problem with the costumes and partying? Are you people afraid that others would find out that you wanted to go see what the fuss was about? Come one guys, live and let live.

Naked people are great. They have no shame, whatsoever, and some of them should! LOL.

I've yet to meet a nudist that I wanted to see nude... the thought is usually disgusting when you see what they look like even with clothes on.

Halloween parties are awesome. Sexy outfits usually go over great. I do think, however, that the dress code needs to be appropriate for any area where children might see what's going on. If this means the kid next door can look out his window in to your back yard... nudity is probably not approriate. That kids doesn't need to see old saggy, wrinkled body parts and more than the rest of us.

Somehow nudity is looked upon in America as bad. I am currently lviing in Germany where there are coed nude Spas - Wellness is the goal. This too shall pass and soon we in the States will become enlightned. Hopefully soon upon my return to Chas. later this year.

Guys, when Adam and Eve appeared on Earth, they didn't come with Ralph Lauren suits and Vera Wang dresses. Come on! It sounds to me like this would've been one helluva party, whether one was clothed or not. And the inference that nudity (or nuditity, to quote Radar O'Reilly of MASH) beings on drugs and sex and that rot is just that...ROT! We got too many freakin' prudes running' around here. We're supposed to be an "enlightened" civilization. Well, after spending the past few decades under the influence of the Established State Religion, I'm beginning to doubt that.

So this is supposed to be ok ........
Would have been a "fright night" for drinking, crime, possible open sexual immorality, possible rape. What do you think the people that you call "low life" would do. Think they would mis that free for all? I would not want my city to be known on the news for that. Just MY OWN OPINION and I have been known to be wrong in my opinions. Benefit for Aids?

In typical fashion, people overreact. The uproar is simple ridiculousness. Don't go if you don't want to see or be part of scantily clad fun.

People need to RELAX.

If this energy was focused on some things that matter, imagine what could be accomplished!

The Town of James Island is truly a joke. It's just a chance for the mayor and her cronies to pretend they have a day job. I have yet to see anything positive come from the town. The fact that this party was not given permits is also not shocking. It's in an old established neigborhood with the type of residents that would be scandalized by seeing a bare shoulder.

When Adam and Eve appeared on earth there were not hundreds of families living in a quiet sedate neighborhood. There were no live, loud bands, there were no alcoholic beverages to relieve drinkers of their inhibitions and excuse bad behavior. Besides that, what the hell does Adam and Eve have to do with this proposed shin dig?

I have attended this party for the last five years and consider Brian King a good friend of mine. The article and hype that has been generated this year is really starting to make this year’s party sound great!
In the years past this party has been held at Brian’s residence in Riverland Terrace and has always been a very safe and controlled environment. The party’s highlights have been really good music and seeing your friends in their Halloween costumes outside of the chaotic bar scene in downtown Charleston.
I have assisted Brian in the preparation of his annual event each year and he has always gone to great lengths to embrace his neighbor’s needs and concerns. This has included wrapping the property in seven foot plastic to contain noise and lights.
Although, scantily clad is one of the themes, with the average age of the attendees between 30-50 and the majority of these attendees being professionals in the Charleston area, the scantily clad in years past has been reserved to sexy costumes rather than full scale nudity.
I think the hype and peoples imagination are blowing this event way out of proportion.

Maybe they should use the proceeds for local orphans or some of the less fortunate on James Island.

Posted by sjmehlhose on October 23, 2007 at 10:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

As far as Adam and Eve are concerned, God himself clothed them when he evicted them from the Garden of Eden. Furthermore, elsewhere in the Bible, immodesty (nudity) is condemned.

Posted by MHA on October 23, 2007 at 11:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I have no problem with nudity. It's just that everyone I've ever met that enjoyed nudity outside of their own home was a person that I did not want to see without their clothes on. I have no interest in being around a bunch a breast and testicles sagging down to a persons knees.

Show me a nude party with nothing but Hooters waitresses or the Swedish Bikini team and I'm there! Well... if I was single I'd be there.. but I'm not.. so I won't.

Dress sexy! Show some cleavage.. show some leg.. but PLEASE... keep those saggy, wrinkly parts covered up.

Oh yea.. adam, eve, god and the bible have nothing to do with this. How did that crap get in here?

This party is only for ONE night? Then what is the big deal? Get over it, people. And even it is not YOUR cup of tea, why ruin it for the others??? It must be difficult riding around on those high horses all the time.

I have gone to this party & out of the 500 or so people that were there, I saw MAYBE 3 people that didn't have SHIRTS on!!
The party was to start at 10 pm, kids shouldn't be walking around the streets at 10 at night!! It was going to be on 24 acres!! (In the woods) When I went before, I personally chose to wear clothes & there were NO fights, sex, etc.
We all had so much fun & guess what,I wasn't on ANY drugs, nor was I drunk!!

This has been so blown out of proportion. I have attended Brian's parties for years, and so have many of the doctors, lawyers, architects, and other reputable professionals that are highly respected in our community.

This is NOT a nudist party - it is a COSTUME party for adults aged between 30-50 (Besides, it's going to be pretty darn cold this weekend!). In all the years that I've attended Brian's parties, I've only seen 3 or 4 naked people amidst over 600 people in costume.

I have to agree with davidinjamesisland that Brian has always gone to great lengths to keep the noise at a minimum and to make sure the neighbors were ok with everything. It angers me to see all these negative comments made by people who have never even attended something like this. If you don't know what you're talking - just don't talk. It seems to me that the people who are complaining about this have nothing better to do, and probably secretly wish they were attending : ). If they're so worried about how this party will affect their children, maybe they should spend the evening having quality time with their children instead of worrying about what other people are doing.

And if this WERE a nudist event, I think it's really sad that the American public is so prudish and so ashamed of their bodies. Maybe they should exercise more. And to all the Bible references out there, if you love God so much, it's insulting to him that you are ashamed of his creation of the human form.

I am going to jump on the soap box to air my .02 cents. I don’t see the pointless name calling, finger pointing, or pompous asinine attitudes with this event. If the event location is in a secluded area, which it sounds, in fact it is, no children are allowed, and public safety is maintained during the event, the party goers are made aware it can be risqué, as well as, encouraged. What are the problems?? Drinking, Drugs, Loud Music, Sex …. To these people I say: … Whatever you do, don’t leave the confines of your homes. Charleston has the Drinking, Drugs, Loud Music, and Sex plague as does every other town in the world!!! BTW… Let us know the “NEW” party location I’m in.

If this party was going to be on a 24 acre farm then how could there be any close neighbors?
As long as what goes on stays on the farm, then why is it anyone's business? Private property is supposed to be just that.....private.
As long as there is no problem with a noise ordinance then Mr. King should be in the clear.
It's not my cup of tea, but he does have his rights.

Thank you.

It amazes me that all these gun-tottin' Jesus freaks are so concerned about their children when Brian King is one of the few people in this neighborhood that has gone to great lengths to provide good, clean, family entertainment for the kids prior to his events. He has always allowed the neighborhood children to come and play in the maze or bouncy castles, etc. before the event. In my opinion, Brian is one of our most upstanding citizens. He is raising money for AIDS orphans in Africa for Christ sake, I would like to know when anyone who has a problem with this benefit has ever done something so commendable? Now because a few closeminded people in our neighborhood are so scared of seeing someone nude these children will never see the relief brian was planning for them. Shame on you. I am embarrassed to say I am from the same community as you.
I've attended several of brian's parties and have never experienced any excessive nudity or drug use, needless to say any sex or violence. Thank you Brian for going out of your way so much to help others. Everyone in this community could learn from your efforts.

To Brian,
If you had a private party on private land and charged no admission (donations taken up by a large man with a bucket) you should be able to have your event without need of permits and involving the govt.
Check it out....
I wish you luck, I grew up in the Terrace and probably know your family. If you need another place I know some people in Berkely County with some farms... email me if you do...
Thanks

You could probably double dutch with my boobs, but I would wear a costume so nobody would have to look at that or trip over them....OR...I would go nude and say it is my costume? LMAO....Only a few people seem to have a problem with this party, unfortunantly it's the few with pull...ha ha, I said pull...like gravity pulls..get it? All jokes aside, sounds like it would've been a good time. Somebody mentioned earlier it would be no less than what you see in broad day light on Folly. How true, sometimes you see less in the dark on Folly. I wish I owned 24 acres of secluded property, Mr. King would have free use for this benefit.

Posted by mioneale on October 23, 2007 at 3:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

From the posted comments it appears that everyone thinks this neighborhood is more upset about the nudity than anything else involving this event; however, if anyone had looked at the opening page of the photo gallery on the website at www.skinfulhalloween.com (which apparently has since been taken down because it was incriminating)they would have seen the implication in the site. Even the owners of the property were duped by Dr. King into believing that the "party" was only going to be about 200 people, not the 1100 plus he would have had to bring in just to "break even". Once the property owners saw the flyer for the event, they themselves determined that the event would not proceed. Additionally, it appears the "promoter" of this event gave some false information to officials to obtain a liquor license. The charity he was using as a front certainly would have liked to avoid this type of publicity. The newspaper article makes the neighborhood sound like complaining prudes, but there are lots of facts that were not included in this article. Why doesn't Dr. Brian King have this party at his "Mt. Pleasant business" on Mill St. and see how the residents of the "Old Village" feel about it.

I still cannot get over the hassle a few people are causing. I also have attended these parties in the past what I saw and what you think it is going to be are two ends of the spectrum! Oh maybe once I saw a girl dressed scantily as a Victoria Secret Angel. Wonder where she got that idea??? Maybe we would have seen Britney Spears this year?? Have you ever seen what your daughters' wear? Hey Ms.Gigis and Mr. DeHaven - isn't Riverland Terrace a little neighborhood? and on James Island? What more of a neighborhood than the Terrace and don't think they had such close-minded issues. And now it was going to be on more acreage- come on people! Complaining of a shuttle?? Don't you think Brian was trying to keep the mass of cars off your yards and streets???? Maybe you should know what you are talking about before you make your comments. Curious to see what other parties take place this Halloween weekend with all the attention you have brought to the newspaper???

Some folks are WAY too uptight. So there's a party where a few people might show up some or mostly nude. And?? Good for them. If they have the balls (or knockers, whatever) to run around naked at a party, well... party on then. Sounds like measures were going to be taken to not have a bunch of elementary kids at the party... and any older than that and I think they have probably already seen a naked person in these times. Being naked isn't always about sex anyway. Some people are just comfortable with their junk out. Not my thing, as long as they aren't trying to give me an unsolicited lap dance or in the middle of preparing my dinner...not bothering me either. It's obvious that the people attending the party are well aware of the atmosphere. So, if you don't approve, don't go.

Please, please, please have your party Dr. King! I was able to go for the first time last year after hearing about it for forever, (even my 1984 college roommate from NYC had been), and had a blast! As far as I'm concerned, this is the event of the year in Charleston. The level of creativity of the hosts and guests is unsurpassed, the mix of people was refreshing, and the costumes and scenery were phenomenal. I saw people that I knew from the College of Charleston, friends I had lost touch with, Folly beach neighbors, and former patients of mine. Best of all, everyone had a really good time and no one got out of hand, or overly intoxicated. People danced, laughed, listened to music, and checked each other's costumes out. I saw one topless person, and no one paid her any inordinate amount of attention. It was just a lot of fun, and that's it! I really hope that you will find another location, and will be tuned into my local network of friends, as we all anxiously await the outcome. By the way, readers, I am a responsible professional, slightly over 40 with no intention of showing up nude or close to it. But I do expect to have a great time, instead of being bored to death at a typical lame-o Charleston scene....

It is blown out of proportion that this party was to be a naked orgy. From my close knowledge it was to be a halloween party for adults who can make their own decisions,(I don't need the city of charleston or citizens stuck in the mud to decide what is o.k.for me),I was not planning on comming naked or getting naked, it was to offer a safe environment for adults, where we could camp, not drive, and be responsible. I fear that this descission will actually increase the number of innebriated drivers on the road that night, rather than have them in a safer environment for everyone.Personally I was excited for the the music lineup, especially the drum band from Ghana(where it was my understanding that some of the procedes were going to go).So these people are against adults making there own decisions, being responsible, and a benefit for africa.(1860's ring a bell?). Grow up,let adults be adults, halloween is nothing to be scared of, adults having responsible fun is nothing to be scared of,(maybe ya'll should get out and have a little of your own),the women they burned in salem were not rerally witches.Jason Vohrees and freddy Kruger only exist in the movies, or maybe on Joe Rivers rd.Relax,Relax,Relax.

Shame on anyone for being against someone willing to put their time, energy and hard-earned money into a charity. That is what is wrong with the world. I've known Brian King for years, professionally and personally. He is a respected professional, father, philanthropist and also knows how to have a good time. Also, it IS Halloween. Those of you afraid of the dark, stay indoors. So there may be a few scantily clad individuals running around on a Saturday night? That doesn't make them pedophiles, rapists or bad people. They are most likely your accountants, lawyers and doctors who you entrust every day. They simply have outside lives. The bottom line, though, is this is for charity, so support any time someone tries to give back.

Like most of you that have posted an online response, I also like to party and have a good time (heck who doesn't). But, I am also a resident of the neighborhood where the party was to take place. The Post & Courier is responsible for blowing things out of proportion and not giving you all of the facts. The article made it sound like we expect everyone to be walking around naked, and we really didn't think that. I don't begrudge you guys having your party - have at it and have a good time. You just won't be doing it right outside my front door. You see, you have been misled by the Post & Courier and Dr. King. The piece of property is not that secluded. The property is in very close proximity to three neighborhoods and is just not a good place for a "mini woodstock". I could hear a backhoe from where I live, so I most certainly would hear a large party and the music beginning at 10:00 pm (while I'm watching the World Series by the way). I would not have been opposted to a small gathering, but shuttle busing in over 1000 people and camping for the weekend was just too much. I will have to admit that I am curious why the website for the party has been significantly altered and/or taken down all together. I think that would have given most readers a different spin on the party. I really hope you find a new place for your party and please be safe - and by the way . . . I was invited.

This is a sad day for the 30 something party crowd in Charleston. I went to this party last year and it was the most fun I have had in Charleston. I was fully clothes by the way and so were most in attendance. I am in mourning over the loss of the party but I guess i can understand.

Just for the record I only saw one set of boobies last year and no penis'. Just for the record :)

The problem was that we were ALL invited, as you know, with flyers in our mailboxes. We really should thank Brian King for giving us all a heads up! I also agree that the reporter did not do a great job giving all of the "details" surrounding our objections, or of stating that even the owners objected after they found out exactly what was happening. When it was suggested to Dr. King that he have the party in the Buffalo South parking lot, he stated that it was "not the type of party you can have in public". Maybe a follow up article by the paper would be in order to cite all of the accurate information.
