A Stall High School teaching assistant, Janet Fackovec, left, is escorted from the school by North Charleston Police Department detective Tim Ramsey after being accused of having sex with a student.

— A teaching assistant at Stall High School has been arrested on charges of having sex with a teenage student, police said.

Detectives arrived at the North Charleston school to arrest Janet Fackovec around 1:40 p.m. The 25-year-old was scheduled for bond hearing Friday on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, police spokesman Spencer Pryor said.

Charleston County schools spokesman Elliot Smalley described Fackovec as a special-education classroom assistant.

“She is not a full-fledged teacher,” Smalley said. “She will be suspended with pay while the allegations are investigated.”

Fackovec has taught at Stall H.S. since September of last year, Smalley said. The school north of Ashley Phosphate Road has nearly 1,000 students.

Administrators were not aware the police were coming to arrest this woman today, he said.

“We don’t know the facts. We just know that there is a criminal investigation. We’ll wait to find out the details,” he said. “We’re in the business of educating kids. So any time there are allegations made, we’re concerned about it and want to find out everything we can.”

A police report gives few details on the student, other that to say he is the Department of Social Services’ custody in another part of the state.
