Baby booty

A new "hip and modern" children's boutique opens at 11 a.m. today on upper King Street in downtown Charleston.

Wonderland, at 511 King, carries clothing, furniture, linens and accessories for babies and children through age 7. Rather than stocking traditional Southern staples such as smocks and seersucker, the boutique offers a mix of "urban, modern and hip" products, according to co-owners Elizabeth Quinton and Michelle Nemeth of Charleston. Quinton is a former hair stylist and makeup artist who co-founded Salon Couture at 420 King St. with husband James. Nemeth has an accounting background.

Wonderland will hold a grand opening celebration from 5:30 to 9 tonight in conjunction with the Upper King Design Walk. Regular store hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The Web site, still under construction, will be wonderlandlove.com.

Spring chicken (burgers, too)

McDonald's is making its return to its longtime spot at 230 Spring St. after a nine-month absence.

The fast-food giant's only peninsula restaurant was closed and razed in February after a roughly 30-year run. The replacement opens today, with breakfast service at 6 a.m. Regular hours will be 5 a.m.-11 p.m., with 24-hour drive-through service. It includes an outdoor dining area, flat- screen televisions, double drive-through lanes and Wi-Fi access.

McDonald's has 30 locations throughout the Charleston region, with half owned and operated by the company and the others by three independent franchisees. The chain's local marketing manager is Terry Worley.

Screening call

The opening of the area's newest Kerr Drug comes with a health checkup.

The North Carolina-based pharmacy chain will mark the occasion at 9 a.m. today at 8995 University Blvd. in North Charleston. In addition to gift bags for the first 200 customers, Kerr is offering free diabetes and blood pressure screenings from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

Paddle power

East of Maui Kayak & Hawaiian Store on James Island is celebrating its five-year anniversary. The store sells kayaks, of course, as well as gear and apparel. It also stocks products ranging from Hawaiian shirts to Kona coffee. Located at 1175 Folly Road in Queensborough Plaza, the store is owned Mike and Denise Primel. The Web site is eomkayaks.com.
