Place
98 Church St., Mount Pleasant
When those with a fondness for the Lowcountry think of landmark bars, folks from both near and far would probably consider institutions like the Windjammer on the Isle of Palms and Big John's Tavern downtown indispensable parts of the local fabric. Now, Mount Pleasant could be offering up a new contender. Red's Icehouse on Shem Creek has quickly become one of the central locations for locals and visitors wanting to enjoy cold beer and the warm South Carolina sun. Just finishing up the establishment's fifth summer (summertime is indeed the best measure of time at a place like Red's), manager Steve Carroll notes that Red's has grown by leaps and bounds since opening, as Charlestonians can't get enough of the creek side bar and tourists can't wait to come back. "We pull folks in from everywhere" says Carroll and "sell more Bud Light than anyone in Charleston." This writer can believe it. Being located in Mount Pleasant has always been ideal, as Red's is halfway between downtown and the beach, yet still on the water and most of it is outdoors. All in all, the perfect Lowcountry bar. Red's is also a place where almost anyone would feel comfortable. "The biggest misconception is that we are a 'young bar,' when the truth is our average customer is 30," says Carroll. "We are a family place, everyone is welcome at Red's" Carroll adds. Unique to Red's is the ability to pull one's boat into Shem Creek and stop in for some grub, or as Carroll puts it, customers can "come by land, or by sea." Red's also features great live music where acts like the Diesel Brothers (Donnie Polk and Dave Dunning), and Hank Futch (who frequently features special guests from Hootie & the Blowfish and the Blue Dogs) do their Charleston-best to entertain customers on a regular basis. Red's has become such an integral part of Charleston that it's hard to believe they've only been around five years. The next five years promises to be just as impressive, and perhaps even better.
