First Super Bi-Lo stores planned for Charleston

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

Grocery store operator Bi-Lo plans to open its first “Super Bi-Lo” stores in the Charleston region next fall, the company announced Wednesday.

The 24-hour supermarkets will replace existing Bi-Lo stores in Hanahan and on James Island, Brian Hotarek, president and chief executive said during a visit to Charleston.

The projects are part of a $40 million plan to overhaul most of the company’s Charleston-area stores, by either renovating them or converting them to the Super Bi-Lo format.

The Mauldin-based chain opened its first Super Bi-Lo in June in Simpsonville, near Greenville, and has since opened several similar stores in the Upstate. The “one-stop shopping” formats are not necessarily larger than traditional Bi-Lo grocery stores, but they offer updated designs, a wider product selection, and longer hours in fresh-food departments such as deli, bakery, meat and seafood.
