Candlelight service

The S.C. Corps of Cadets will present its Christmas Candlelight Service for the Lowcountry at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1-3 in Summerall Chapel on The Citadel campus.

Cadets from the Protestant, Catholic and Gospel choirs, Chorale, Women's Ensemble and members of The Citadel Regimental Band will take part in the annual celebration. Traditional and international favorites will be sung and highlights include the Procession of Lights.

Cadets coordinate the production with Nancy Lefter, director of chorale activities; organist Mark A. Bebensee of the School of Business Administration; and Cmdr. Mike Alverson, director of music.

The hourlong program is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted. Flash cameras and video lights are not permitted inside the chapel.

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early. For more information, call 953-5049.

Yuletide Madrigal Feast

The Department of Music in the School of the Arts at the College of Charleston will present "A Yuletide Madrigal Feast" at 7 p.m. Dec. 6-8 in Alumni Memorial Hall in Randolph Hall on the college campus.

The award-winning College of Charleston Madrigal Singers, conducted by Dr. Robert Taylor, will perform sacred and secular traditional holiday season carols. Each of the three evenings will be filled with Renaissance entertainment and a feast fit for royalty.

The Renaissance menu will consist of French pork chop with black truffle demi-glaze, fingerling potatoes, grilled asparagus spears, rustic breads, cranberry/walnut tart, tea, coffee and wine. Wassail also will be served. Tickets are $60 each, sold in advance until 5 p.m. Dec. 3. Seating is limited, and tickets will not be sold at the door. Tickets can be purchased by calling 953-6306.

Alzheimer's course

Alzheimer's Caregiver Skills, a course for the general public and health care providers, will be held 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Continuing Education Center (Building 910) on Trident Technical College's Main Campus, 2001 Mabeline Road, North Charleston. The cost is $49.

Fran Emerson, regional program coordinator for the Alzheimer's Association-Palmetto Chapter, covers three relevant areas: understanding the illness, improving communication and understanding behavior. All participants receive a certificate of completion.

Playwrights Tonight

The College of Charleston's Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art and Department of Theatre will present "Playwrights Tonight," an evening of new work written and performed by students in Dr. Franklin Ashley's playwriting class. The event will take place at 7 p.m. Dec. 3. The event is free.

"Sinatra Scenes" is a tribute to Frank Sinatra's music using five of his classic songs as inspiration for creating new student-written material. Sinatra songs featured are "The Lady Is a Tramp," "I've Got You Under My Skin," "Fly Me to the Moon," "The Way You Look Tonight" and "The Best Is Yet to Come."

This is the 14th year for "Playwrights Tonight," which will be presented in the College of Charleston's Halsey Institute Gallery on the first floor of the Simons Center.

Many students from earlier classes have gone on to win playwriting awards from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and the Association for Theatre in Higher Education.

The Simons Center is at 54 St. Philip St. Parking is available in the Wentworth Street garage.
