Platt again to seek District 115 seat

The Post and Courier
Saturday, November 24, 2007

Eugene Platt, who came within 40 votes of unseating Rep. Wallace Scarborough last year, said he will try again next year.

Platt, a Democrat, said the narrowness of that loss, combined with encouraging remarks from James Island voters in District 115, persuaded him to try again.

He kicked off his campaign Friday morning by waving at passing motorists on the James Island Expressway with a friend who was dressed up as Santa Claus.

It remains to be seen if the upcoming contest will be anywhere near as raucous as their 2006 race, which was enlivened by the candidates exchanging barbs over Scarborough's recent divorce, his arrest on a gun charge that later was dropped and Platt's erotic poetry.

"I personally am not going to make an issue of Wallace's negative past, and I would urge any of those closely connected with my campaign not to make an issue of it," Platt said. "Nevertheless, it's been well-publicized, and people have longer, better memories than they're given credit for."

Platt said his message would remain largely the same as it was last year.

"I think people are still concerned about protecting the natural environment and putting the brakes on unbridled development," he said.

He also said he expected 2008 to be an even better year for Democrats, which would improve his chances against Scarborough, a Republican.

"People over here are far more independent than they are Republican," Platt said.

Scarborough, who is expected to seek re-election to the District 115 House seat next year, did not return a message Friday.

In real people speak, not politician speak, what he means is:
I'll let other people do my dirty work. Like my good friends at that other paper in town. Or maybe some bloggers around the state.

Nice try Eugene.

We got your number last time.

The politics of personal destruction don't work here.

You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you are going to have to try better than that.

Game on.

Eugene Platt rocks.

I did not appreciate people sending out copies of Eugene's poem about wanting to make love to his daughter.

Grow up people. It was a poem.

Or saying that Mr. Platt is gay. So what. I am and I know he supports our fight for equality in the gay, bisexual and transgendered world.

I'll be happy to vote for Mr. Platt again as I know he has my interest at heart.

I think Platt is a good candidate. I like his stances on the family, crime, and I am warm to his view on taxes, though I would need to know a little more. What exactly has Scarborough done to deserve reelection, taxicab?

What exactly has Representative Scarborough done not to deserve re-election? I think it would be the job of the challenger to point out what exactly Representative Scarborough has done, or not done, that would warrant that vote. Calling this place home, I place a high value on protection and conservation of our environment. Representative Scarborough continues to get high marks in that area. He is about as green as a Republican as you would ever want to meet. Taxes? Is there a Republican in South Carolina that isn't for lower taxes? I'm sure that Representative Scarborough has probably voted for every tax cut that has come through the General Assembly in the years he has been there.

Experience counts and Representative Scarborough has it.
