Magnolia a 'Hero'
Sunday, November 18, 2007
Magnolia Plantation and Gardens has received a "Landslide 2007, Heroes of Horticulture" award from the Cultural Landscape Foundation. The awards spotlight landscapes that are in danger of destruction or alteration. Magnolia was honored for its work to restore its 325-year-old camellia garden. With more than 1,000 varieties, some dating to the mid-1800s, the garden holds one of the largest camellia collections in the world. Horticultural Director Tom Johnson is working to locate hard-to-find camellia varieties to add to the garden. Magnolia will hold a monthlong Camellia Festival beginning in mid-January.
