Ending school right with a list of goals

The end of the school year is a milestone to celebrate and an opportunity to encourage children to reflect on what they've learned while dreaming up the goals they'd like to reach for next year.

Educator Susan V. Bosak, who is chair of the national Legacy Project (www.legacyproject.org), an education initiative, has some ideas to help parents and teachers end the school year right:

--Encourage children to make a Top 10 list of the best memories.

--Work together to set summer reading goals.

--Use the Legacy Project's "Ladder to the Stars" to help children identify the steps to achieve a goal.

--Use the Dreamer Profile to help children explore whether they're a creative, dynamic or practical dreamer.

Just in time for summer, Huggies Little Swimmers offer parents a way to make sure their little ones aren't getting too much sun.

New self-adhesive, water-resistant Sun Sensors monitor UVB rays when placed on skin or clothing and change color with increased exposure to the sun, letting moms know it's time to reapply sunscreen.

Sun Sensors, in packs of 24, are available in the baby-care aisle or sun care section at grocery stores, drugstores and department stores for about $4.99. Visit LittleSwimmers.com.

Prevent mutiny with pirate parenting

With "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" set to open Friday, author Tim Bete is encouraging parents to brush up on their pirate parenting skills.

"Most parents have been on the wrong end of a mutiny at one time or another," says Bete, author of "Cap'n Billy 'The Butcher' MacDougall's Guide to Pirate Parenting: Why You Should Raise Your Kids as Pirates And 101 Tips on How to Do It."

The book's Web site (PirateParenting.com) is loaded to the gunnels with pirate fun.
