The Charleston Maritime Festival will begin today at noon, as the Spirit of Bermuda sails into the Charleston Harbor to be greeted by Mayor Joe Riley.

After he speaks, the Colombian Navy's sail training vessel, Gloria, will sail toward the Charleston Maritime Docks to welcome the Spirit of South Carolina to the international tall ship fleet with a 21-gun salute.

The Spirit of South Carolina will fire four cannons in reply to honor Gloria's 40th anniversary. Brad Van Liew, director of the South Carolina Maritime Foundation, said the firings will "wake up the whole city."

The Gombey dancers and drummers from Bermuda were scheduled to ride into port on board the Spirit of Bermuda today, but their flight has been delayed and they will not arrive until this evening.
