Mayor Keith Summey mourns tragic death of firefightersTuesday, June 19, 2007
"The City of North Charleston along with its citizens mourn the passing of nine courageous firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty while battling the massive and devastating fire at the Sofa Super Store in West Ashley," said North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey. “To the families, friends, co-workers and others who may have known these brave heroes our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.” “What happened in Charleston last night is a tragic reminder of the danger faced by firefighters and other men and women in uniform as they put themselves in harm's way each and every day to keep the rest of us safe.” Summey goes on to say, “The City of North Charleston Fire Department will continue to assist their colleagues in a support capacity and stand ready to provide any assistance needed.” We often work and train closely together with the City Fire Department and share in the loss of our fallen brethrens. “I ask that everyone continue to support the family of the victims through your thoughts and prayers.” |

I live in Spokane WA, and I wanted to let the families of the fallen and the Community of North Charleston know that we here in WA state mourn with you. One life lost is a tragedy, but to loose 9 can be unbearable. My family would like to join your's in celebrating the lives of the 9 brave firefighters that gave of themselves to protect their neighbors, families, friends and co-workers. No greater love does a man possess than to give his life for another. Truly, these were men of love. Men with the fortitude to rush into harms way in order to save others. No words or memorial can say enough about these men. I hope that the families and community will quickly recover from the sense of loss. May you all hold your heads high knowing that these nine fulfilled their duty. I pray that the Father will give you strength in this difficult time. God Bless all of you. Ben Barton, Spokane WA.
