HISTORY: The bar, owned by Derek Harris and Brian Lawson, has been operating for almost 1 1/2 years.

Nestled between Shoney's and an old strip mall along Savannah Highway sits a building that years ago was Captain Don's Hot & Spicy Fish Shop. The space has gone through multiple transformations and owners since.

When I first saw the latest sign to adorn the building – d.d. peckers' Wing Shack – I wondered how long this new business might last. While some might look to consultants or market research for answers, my market research came repeatedly over a few months, as the typical question to friends: "What did you do last night?" or "What are you up to this afternoon?" These questions were answered with d.d. peckers'. It seemed the new business with the unusual name had become quite popular, after all.

d.d. peckers' is a self-described "fun neighborhood joint," which is true, if by "neighborhood" one means West Ashley, James Island, North Charleston and even downtown, as the bar/restaurant tends to draw customers from all over. It has one of the more eclectic crowds in the area; everyone from students and food and beverage workers in their early 20s, to working class folks and upscale professionals in their 40s and 50s.

These people have made d.d. peckers' a favorite hot-spot. Featuring a spacious outdoor patio, and what might be described as an adult "sandbox," to give the place a "beach like" feel, patrons can enjoy a cold beer indoors or outdoors, a feature not common along Savannah Highway.

d.d. peckers' also has one of the most extensive and unique menus in town. Of course any self-respecting "wing shack" must put its chicken wings front and center, which d.d. peckers does, offering 25 different flavors. The "Southern" style wing (a fried chicken wing dipped in white gravy) has to be one of the most popular items on the menu (at least it's the item most of my friends rave about). As an antidote to such artery-clogging cuisine, d.d. peckers also offers grilled wings as a healthier alternative to traditional wings. The place also offers a long list of sandwiches, burgers, paninis, salads and appetizers, all of which reinforce the establishment's reputation for good food. I have never heard a bad word, but much praise.

d.d. peckers' is a fun place with good food and a down-home feel.

That it has become a popular spot for so many so quickly, should guarantee the restaurant a bright future.

Captain Don's Seafood is still in business. They sell fresh seafood, and are just up Savannah Highway.
d.d.pecker's is in an old Long John Silver's restaurant. Oh, how I miss "Long John's," where I could get a cold beer with my fast-food fish & fries!

It is not Long John Silvers- and it is not Capt. Dons seafood market - it WAS CD"s (Captain Don's) Hot fish shop. Sorta like an upscale Captain D's
