The following programs are scheduled by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission. For some activities, a chaperon is required for participants 15 and younger. Call 795-4386 or 762-8089.

Events and programs

Surf Seining: Anchovy, pompano, kingfish, stingray, crabs and even a squid have shown up in nets. Come out and meet some of your wave-bound neighbors. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants 15 and under. Beachwalker Park. Ages 6 and up. $8/$6 CCR discount. 4-5 p.m. Sept. 1. and 10-11 a.m. Sept. 22.

Sea Kayak Instructional Classes — Introduction to Kayaking: ACA-certified instructors lead classes. Using a variety of boats, this entry-level course teaches basic strokes and skills. James Island County Park. Ages 16 and up. $30/$25 CCR discount. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 1.

Moonlight Mixer: Dance the night away under the stars at the last Moonlight Mixer of the season. Local DJ Rob Duren will spin oldies and beach music. Beverages will available for purchase on-site. Food and snacks will be available for purchase at Locklear's Beach City Grill and Gangplank Gift & Tackle Shop. Only 550 tickets will be sold. Admission ticket (not receipt) is required for event entry. Advance purchase is recommended as mixers usually sell out. No refunds or exchanges. Folly Beach Fishing Pier. $10/$8 CCR discount/$10 on-site (if available). 7-11 p.m. Sept. 7.

Star Light, Star Bright: Become familiar with the night sky using telescopes to view galaxies, globular clusters, nebulas and other deep-space forms. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants 15 and under. Caw Caw Interpretive Center. Ages 12 and up. $8/$6 CCR discount. 8-9:30 p.m. Sept. 7.

Rendering Visible — Stono Slave Rebellion Driving Trail: CCPRC and the College of Charleston are collaborating to mark the bicentennial end to the British and American legal trans-Atlantic slave trade by remembering Africans forced to America and their often-overlooked reactions to enslavement. Tour with historians the bloody route of freedom seekers from the National Historic Landmark Hutchenson's Store to Battlefield Plantation, where militia and freedom seekers clashed. Multiple stops are included, and the event's importance is revealed. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Caw Caw Interpretive Center. Ages 9 and up. $12/$10 CCR discount. 1-4 p.m. Sept. 8.

After-School Adventures — After-School Paddle: Come paddle after school. Group will spend some time reviewing and learning basic canoe and kayak strokes, then will play some paddling games. James Island County Park. Ages 6-12. $10/$8 CCR discount. 3:30-6 p.m. Sept. 12.

Pier Fishing Tournaments: Enter to win prizes in a variety of categories at the pier on Folly Beach. Registration begins at 6 a.m. and takes place on-site only. Tournament ends at 4 p.m., and prizes will be awarded at 4:15 p.m. For more information, call the Folly Beach Fishing Pier at 588-FISH (3474). At the pier. Ages 3 and up. $12/$9 CCR discount/$7 youth 3-12. 6 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 15.

Parent & Child Trips — Folly River Kayaking: Join a group for a paddle along Folly River. The tidal creeks and marshes of the Folly River are full of natural beauty. Bring Mom or Dad and work on kayaking skills. This program is for ages 8-16 and their parents. A registered and paid chaperon is required for child participants. Meets at CCPRC headquarters. Ages 8 and up. $34/$28 CCR discount. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 22.

Canoeing At Caw Caw — Caw Caw Sunset/Moonrise Paddle: Witness the sun as it slips below the trees of the Caw Caw Swamp, followed by the moonrise over Tea Farm Creek. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Meets at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. Ages 9 and up. $18/$15 CCR discount. 5:30-7:45 p.m. Sept. 26.
