2 Florida students charged in explosives scare face $800,000 bond

A bomb squad technician examines items removed from a four door sedan on Highway 176 in Goose Creek early Sunday morning. The FBI is on the scene investigating the suspicious car that was stopped by police Saturday night. A robot, center, removed several items including a backpack, a large gas can, and a red box from the car. The technician crawled on his stomach for a cautious up-close look at several items.
GOOSE CREEK Pipe bombs were found Saturday in the trunk of a car being driven by two Florida college students, according to court documents.
Now the men will have to post a combined $800,000 in bond to get out of jail, a circuit judge decided this afternoon.
Youseff Megahed, 21, and Ahmed Mohamed, 24, have been charged with possession of an incendiary device, Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt announced today. If convicted of the charges, the men could face between 2 to 15 years in prison.
Mohamed’s bond was set at $500,000 while Megahed’s was set at $300,000.
Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt said the men were pulled over Saturday night on U.S. Highway 176 while driving more than 60 mph in a 45-mph zone. When an officer approached the car, he saw one of them men fold a laptop computer, which the officer believed was suspicious, DeWitt said.
The officer asked them if he could search the car, which the men agreed to. When he asked if there was anything in the car he should know about, the men said there were fireworks in the trunk.
At a 1:30 p.m. news conference today in Tampa, a spokesman for the University of South Florida where the men attend said Megahed is an undergraduate student and Mohamed is a civil engineering graduate student, the Tampa Tribune is reporting.
Mohamed is originally from Kuwait and completed his undergrad education in Cairo, according to the Tampa newspaper. He has been at USF since January and was registered for six hours during summer session, the spokesman told the paper.
Megahed, originally from Egpyt, has been enrolled at USF since 2004 and had not declared a major. He was registered for three hours this fall, according to the newspaper.
An Islamic community leader from Tampa, Fla., who’s been in touch with the families of the two detained college students, told The Post and Courier that Megahed and Mohamed are not troublemakers and that they a were simply on a weekend trip to North Carolina.
Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights organization for Muslims, said family members have told him they think the materials were leftover fireworks Megahed kept in his trunk since July 4.
“Both of them are really naïve kids,” Bedier said.
He said Megahed is a permanent legal resident of the United States and Mohamed was the passenger. Mohamed’s legal status is not known.
“There’s a lot of unanswered questions,” Bedier said.
A terrorism task force, meanwhile is reviewing the evidence, said FBI spokesman Richard Kolko.
“At this point, it is too early in the investigation to say there is any link to terrorism,” Kolko said.
News that explosives were found Saturday shocked residents in Goose Creek, home to the Naval Weapons Station, which houses the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig, a military prison where enemy combatants have been held.

Thank God for our quick acting emergency personnel... they really never recieve enough credit. Had these individuals not been apprehended and a bomb had actually gone off, the public would have begun pointing fingers everywhere except at these idiots who have no respect for life. Sadly, I've yet to meet a person of middle-eastern dissent who has any sort of respect for other people! I've met many, and also worked for two companies owned by middle-eastern families, and the trait is all the same.
Personally, I'd like to wipe the middle east off the map. My husband is in the Air Force and has been over there multiple times, and he quite agrees.
God Bless America, God Bless our leader, President Bush, and God Bless our troops!!!!

The comment made by RockSolidRepublican about middle eastern people shows that ignorance is alive and well in the south. All I can say is God bless her for being so ignorant!

"No Thanks", please show some signs of intelligence. Unless you know Mr. Knuoff personally, you are not qualified to judge him due to lack of information. The reporter has conversed with him. You almost certainly have not. As for you, "Bailey 10", there are in fact people from the south that posess superior intelligence and education. Your lack of intelligence is evidenced by your ignorant posting, since the premise of your comments is that all Southerners are stupid, an obvious falsehood. As for you, "Rock Solid Republican", I am sure that you have correctly observed that many Middle Easterners are in fact screwed up individuals; however, this is not true for all of them and you should not give ammunition to the pathetic ignoramuses I critiqued above who are actually stupid enough to buy into a retarded stereotype. "Slaughtermeyer" seems to have his or her act together, since he or she introduces EVIDENCE. Maybe he or she is a lawyer.

Well, postman01, I guess I should reiterate that not all Southerners are ignorant and stupid. I'm very well aware that a lot of people from the south are intelligent and educated. I am a Southerner, educated and quite intelligent myself. Ignorance and bigotry is alive everywhere. The comments that RockSolidRepublican made about wiping Middle Easterners off the face of the map made my blood boil. There is enough violence in this world and there are too many other important issues at hand such as healthcare, bridges, getting this country on the right track than to do something that will never happen like wipe another country off the map. I still stand behind my posting but wanted to clarify that my posting was not intended for Southerners in particular, but for RockSolidRepublican and others that believe the way she does. I agree that not all Middle Easterners are bad people just like not all Americans are bad. You have a bad batch in any ethinicity. I hope this helps clarify my original posting.

My husband and I saw this developing story on CNN at 10pm last night; It was "breaking news". Though they had a lack of information, they were certainly trying to give the impression that the men were terrorists, had a car full of bombs and were of Middle Eastern descent. Due to their lack of information, my husband wanted to tune into local news, because they might know more. We flipped around and the only local news was on Fox 24. After several commercials about how they give you the news when you need it, they cut to a segment about the puppies up for adoption at a local shelter. Nothing against puppies, but makes me feel like the news around here is a joke.

Old "Jack" may have dupped the reporter here BUT I was going to a party around 6pm and witnessed this:
4 Berkeley county patrol cars with lights on had a tan color 4 door older model CAR pulled over. Standing beside the car was 2 men in cuffs having a middle eastern look, sorry if that sounds like racial profiling, I don't really care. An officer was searching the car and another searched the trunk. The one searching the trunk held up a partially covered cylinder looking item. I jokingly said to my wife that they looked like they had a bomb. Well when we tried to return to our home on Myers rd the road was blocked off. There you go....An eyewitness account.

I was also on my way home that way, around 5:30 or 6:00. and I can assure you I couldn't even get close enough to see the car or anyone in it. The traffic was rerouted in front of Walmart and we had to turn back around and go through the subdivisions to 78 and home. From Walmart, it APPEARED to be occurring down another mile...possibly in front of Devon Forest or ALCOA(too far away to be positive)...but our goal was Meyers Road as well, and we couldn't get anywhere remotely close...so I question "eyewitness".(Unless you missed something in your post) Having grown up in a law enforcement home, I assure you that plain clothes officers would NEVER pick up a cylinder container, not knowing what is inside. The would simply open the trunk, view the contents, and if questionable, call for the bomb squad. I know CGPD has had some issues in the past, but I would find it hard to believe they would be THAT stupid.

Hello Ya'll! glad to see my comments made your blood boil Bailey10. It's great for you to get mad and start thinking hard! As for postings calling me a SOUTHERNER that's quite a joke as I am from the western US. I'm sorry to say though, your comments do not bother me in the least, as you probably intended. And this is why...I am solid in my opinions and regardless of Anything Anyone has Ever posted on a blog, do you think it's ever changed anyone's mind? I really don't think so. Feel free to call me ignorant and make jokes, keep them coming! Challenge yourself to abandon our liberal social principles and think beyond the shell the media has pushed you into. I am so proud of you for reading my postings and responding, it shows attention and thought!
I do realize though that I, too, will not change your mind as to your own opinions... The only reason I post is because I want to encourage others who think the same way I do. There are a lot of us out there, but unfortunately we don't speak up enough as we ought to.
Oh, and mac0cm4, my closing line is independent of my thoughts expressed above. I simply close my postings thanking God for America, and asking him to bless this wonderful nation.
Adios to all, thanks for entertaining me. It's been fun.

I don't get it. It seems to be a virtual news vacuum about this story. From what I've been able to piece together, this is what (I think) we know. 2 middle eastern men riding in a car that appears to be a rental with Florida plates were stopped for 10 hours on a US highway while the RED CROSS set up shop, then arrested while the bomb squad blew up 'illegal' explosives contained in the vehicle which was in close proximity to a US Naval facility, international airport, and appeared to be headed in the general direction of I 95 which after a cursory map inspection seems to be a bee line to DC.
The MSM version has been reduced to 2 guys were arrested after police destroyed a 'device' in South Carolina.
Am I missing something here? If I was a local journalist, I'd be all over this one.

Much of what the MSM is reporting comes from the Associated Press, not local reporters. Inserting "men of Middle Eastern descent" into the news story is to stimulate our blood thrust. This is the same tactic used on 9/11 with phony baloney hijackers. Susanne Schafer is on the AP South Carolina news staff.

The November 5, 2003 police raid of Stratford High School was recorded by both the school’s surveillance cameras and a police camera. The tapes show students as young as 14 forced to the ground in handcuffs as officers in SWAT team uniforms and bulletproof vests aim guns at their heads and lead a drug dog to tear through their book bags.
The raid was initiated by the school’s principal at the time, George McCrackin, who resigned shortly after the tapes surfaced on national television. The raid was authorized based on the principal's suspicion that a single student was dealing marijuana. The raid was carried out despite the suspected student being absent at the time. No drugs or weapons were found during the raid and no charges were filed.

Goose Creek - Two men are being held in the Berkeley County Detention Center after police find explosive making devices in their car. The men 21-year-old Yousef Megahed and 24-year-old Ahmed Mohamed were pulled over Saturday evening during a routine traffic stop near Myers Road and Highway 176. Among the explosive devices found were igniters and fusers. Few details about the suspects are known at this time. They are believed to be students at a Florida college. They are of Middle Eastern descent and are not US citizens. Neither man has been charged, but charges are expected Monday. A press conference will be held at the Berkeley County Sheriff's office Monday at 11:30 in the morning."

This is just a question, as I have been out of the area for a while and I would never want to pass blame or suggest a false theory--BUT...has the brig at the NWS not been used to house some rather high-profile or at least considerably well known terrorist suspects or something ??? I know that the brig, itself, is on a more secure part of the base; however, the "open" feeling of the Weapons Station scares me somewhat. It is the first base that we have been assigned to that is not more guarded. I remember when we were there--even in the late 1990's, the road was open through to Bushy Park. I'm sure that a fence isn't much of a deterrent to someone with explosives and determination.
I hope; however, that this will be cleared up tomorrow and it may seem that it was over reacting on everyone's part. If there is more to the story--I agree with the earlier comment, thank goodness for routine traffic stops!

To 'slaughtermeyer': you are going around posting on various sites that carry this article that the men detained are probably Israelis. You are an anti-semitic terrorist sympathizer who is trying to spread your hateful anti-semitism everywhere you go. Are you on the CAIR payroll? And what excatly does your screen name 'slaughtermeyer' mean? Slaughter the Jews?
Shall I look up your IP address? Perhaps you are posting from an enemy nation?
The men named are ARABS? Get it?

That goes for you too 'Amanda.' You and 'slaughtermeyer' are spreading anti-Jewish anti-Israeli propaganda straight from an Iranian textbook.
Here's a quote from you:
"Were the men of Middle Eastern descent found with a bomb in Goose Creek, SC, Israeli Citizens? The reason I am asking is because they have a history of terrorist activity in the US near military or
government installations and the Charleston Naval
Weapons Station is located in Goose Creek, SC."
The reason you are asking such a ridiculous question is to give yourself a platform for your anti-semitic conspiracy theories where the Jews are always behind every plot carried out by muslim terrorists. Either too much Alex Jones or too much jihadist indoctrination. Please go away.

Wow....how close to a Military Base can two Middle Easterners get, and with bomb material in hand? All of this seems a little off the normal. It is even more a little strange a routine police stop by Goose Creek Police seemed to stop by chance two Middle Easterners that just happened to have bomb material Did they get a call for a heads up. That's the only way I can imagine the Goose Creek Police on the scene. Hell fire I've had to go through the act of removing a left kidney to get a police officer to show up for a House Break in close to the same area....Wow some facts are definitely missing....

OK, Let's recap
The men 21-year-old "Yousef Megahed" and 24-year-old Ahmed Mohamed.
They are of Middle Eastern descent and are not US citizens.
They are believed to be students at a Florida college.
The car was rented from South Florida.
Could this be the "Yousef Megahed" they are talking about?

It's easy to lose sight that the US is a major target of many terrorists who despise our way of life and the fact that we are Israel's ally. Sadly, it seems that Muslims all over the world want to see our downfall and are being trained from birth to despise us and to believe that they will receive a reward after death for killing our elderly, men, women and children. I'm not being racist, just pointing out a fact. We see them burning our flag on their streets chanting "Death to America" and recruiting American Muslims via You Tube to carry out terrorist bombings. Wake up people, New York was not the last city we will see hit hard by the end result of blind hatred......if they are in Goose Creek South Carolina, they can be anywhere.

Gosh, it turns out they really ARE non-citizens from the Middle East, despite the best efforts of the AP and Post and Courier to whitewash the incident.
But maybe they're not really jihadis, maybe they're Methodists on their way to bingo night.

Does anyone think that the FBI is going to tell us at this point whether these men are possibly terrorists? It would probably cause mass hysteria. Amanda, I'm going to respond to this comment you made:
The recent nondescript bomb scare is not the first normalization of direct police-state actions in Goose Creek, SC.
http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z13/A......

This is the latest AP report on the bomb incident near Goose Creek.
The salient thing here is the refusal of the Berkeley County Sheriffs office to talk to the AP. I understand that they might put the P & C first BUT they should treat ANY legitimate news organization with equal respect. The AP is unquestionably legitimate.
So we're seeing the sheriff's dept there display a xenophobic redneck streak, which is unacceptable in today's world. Not to mention EMBARRASSING to the multitudes that are FROM HERE who are not xenophobic rednecks. This is a national news story and the P & C is not geared for that kind of coverage by design. This could happen anywhere and there is no shame whatsoever upon US that it happened here; in fact, the healthy viewpoint is that our boys prevented a tragedy.
By the way, I am a native and I find myself in large agreement with the sentiments and postings of most on this thread; however, we are AMERICANS first and Southerners second. Remember that!!!!!!!!!! As for the charges of "whitewashing", if there was such an attempt it failed. As for the "redneckville" contention, most people here are not rednecks. That ceased to be true a while ago and living in the past is UNHEALTHY.
A little less "black helicopter" nonsense and more DISPASSIONATE analyis would seem to be in order here.
I am disappointed in "Slaughtermeyer" for displaying anti-semitism. That's pathetic, especially since a big time Jew (Joseph Lieberman) has the guts to openly support President Bush despite the idiotic behavior and rhetoric of that pitiful excuse for a political party he belongs to.

Thank you, postman01 for finally getting us back on track with the discussion. . . As you said, a little less "nonsense"... why would Berkeley County be so quiet about things if it were 'nothing'. Wouldnt' they come out and say, 'Nothing to see here folks, move along?" I mean, I understand taking precautions, but once the threat is minimized--why wait until MONDAY to hold a press converence?
As for the "mass hysteria" haweena, does this mere comment log not echo that? Rather than trying to find out what happened in Goose Creek, the topic quickly turned to finger pointing, racial suggestions, and even "anti-semitism" conversations. If anything, this blog shows that people are very quick to judge and guess--but often fail to miss the message: IF the explosives were carried through Charleston, they could have had an intended target locally--or they could have had bigger plans that happened to be interrupted, thank goodness, by a county deputy in SC...either way, the facts are the facts and that should be what is the focus of any logical questions or comments. The P&C provides this service to us to express our opinions, gain information, and hopefully become more educated in the process. Racial, Religious, Anti-Semitic, Anti-Muslim remarks should be posted somewhere else, in my opinion. . .

Livia, perhaps they are trying to gather more information and check facts before going in front of the national media and making an ill informed statement just because enquiring minds want to know.
When dealing with such a touchy topic and a matter of national security, discretion is necessary, as is time since they are dealing with several other national agencies having to give their approval for them to move forward.

Thank you, Livia. One observation I would like to make is that the racial, religious, etc. remarks actually do serve a purpose, which is as follows: Because we are anonymous, we say what we really think, something we might not do if we were worried about offending friends and/or family. In addition, it tells us how some of the people we share the world with actually think, which is invaluable infromation not only for purposes of this discussion thread but also life in general. The flip side is that those who we "question" (to put it politely) also know how we think to an extent. The question is what does a given individual do with this insight. That's the dividing line amongst us.
Anyway, the truth is that Uncle Sam is running this show and this is now a national security matter. No matter what we read or hear, when the FBI tells the Berkeley County Sheriff's department (or any other local or state law enforcement agency) to jump, their response is "how high". This is the most important thing to understand when assessing the behavior of Berkeley County and the subsequent reporting of it, since journalists can only responsibly report what they know. This assumes, of course, no "leaks" as such.

Well, I would have to say that no matter where thses two individuals were coming from or even going, they were stopped for speeding and then the Officers found what appeared to be an explosive device. Being in Law Enforcement and the military, these two are being held within the limits of the law and they should be charged in accourdance with Local, State, and federal laws pertaining to the possession and transporting an explosive type device. Just because they are from some college in Florida doesn't exclude them from the laws in South Carolina. My hat goes off to the officer, troopers and all emergency responders for handling this incident with great magnitude and professionalism.
This incident just lets the American people know what their military has to deal with everyday in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Job Well Done!

WithHonor,
No one is saying that they shouldn't be held IF they broke the law. At this point it appears that they broke the law for speeding...the FBI was on hand to investigate and they have stated it appeared to be fireworks. My question would then be, is it illegal to possess fireworks in SC? No...However...I am not familiar enough with SC law yet to say if it is unlawful to carry fireworks across state lines. It appears there is a lot of missing information on this story and until they release more information, there is no need for panic.
I am the daughter of a retired police Sergeant, my sister is a Chas. Co. Sheriff's Deputy, and I am also former military myself. I am absolutely glad that the officers did their job and were very observant, as it could have been a whole lot worse. The GCPD should be proud their men acted on their training. kudos. I just hope it isn't blown out of proportion for what it truly is.
My comment (however sarcastic it may have sounded) was aimed at another post(er), whom I felt is being off kilter, so I simplified. I apologize if I wasn't clear.

To Rollo: I can assure you that there are no more GC units on the street than normal. I can also tell you that since GC is not in Charleston County they'd not be operating over there unless it was for a special incident, such as the one in the article.
To crtrue: Would you rather that they have some egg on their face and be sure it was nothing, or blow it off and have innocent people (perhaps someone you know) be injured or killed? In any event, I don't believe they've got egg on their face (Berkeley County prefers pancakes, and you can find about four or five deputies at Alex's in Goose Creek for hours every night...), they did their job - better safe than sorry.

I felt it necessary to point out that in spite of whether these men are being presented as sight seeing students ( with a bomb... ), the hijackers of 9/11 were all educated and respected men and none close to them ever saw "it" coming. With that said, I'd like to post an exerpt I found of the fatwa declared by Bin Laden just to shed some light on the scale of what we are dealing with.
( I say to you William (Defence Secretary) that: These youths love death as you loves life. They inherit dignity, pride, courage, generosity, truthfulness and sacrifice from father to father. They are most delivering and steadfast at war. They inherit these values from their ancestors (even from the time of the Jaheliyyah, before Islam). These values were approved and completed by the arriving Islam as stated by the messenger of Allah (Allah's Blessings and Salutations may be on him): "I have been send to perfecting the good values". (Saheeh Al-Jame' As-Sagheer). Our youths believe in paradise after death. They believe that taking part in fighting will not bring their day nearer; and staying behind will not postpone their day either. Exalted be to Allah who said: {And a soul will not die but with the permission of Allah, the term is fixed} (Aal Imraan; 3:145). Our youths believe in the saying of the messenger of Allah (Allah's Blessings and Salutations may be on him): Those youths know that their rewards in fighting you, the USA, is double than their rewards in fighting some one else not from the people of the book. They have no intention except to enter paradise by killing you. An infidel, and enemy of God like you, cannot be in the same hell with his righteous executioner. )

Wow, Charleston, way to show that the terrorists have won, that they have turned us into hyper-reactive fools incapable of thought outside of the hindbrain. Anyone actually engaging something beyond their brainstem will notice that "...officials said they [don't] expect a federal charge to be filed." If this were a serious issue that could even have a chance of being linked to terrorism, the Fed would be all over it. Come on, people. We're better than this.
If I were to conduct myself in the P&C comments as many of you, then guess what? I'd say that most of you here are morons, if I may draw a conclusion based on the limited evidence that you present in your comments. It's probably not fair of me to make that judgment, but then again, so many posters here seem to draw conclusions about criminal matters based on preliminary reporting, so I'm taking the same liberty as they. There is certainly no lack of zealous enthusiasm when the person committing the crime is a non-white, so I am happy to make my comments with the same zeal.
This article certainly does not provide the whole story, so why don't those of you invoking 9/11 and thinly-veiled anti-Muslim vitriol pipe down until the whole story comes out (i.e. whether it a pack of M80s or a genuine threat).
I for one would hate to be Muslim or even darkly-tanned if I were in the US. these days Imagine the chiding, sneering, and accusatory stares. Sounds A LOT like what Protestants went through years ago - i.e., why so many of us whites are here in these United States in the first place.
And while you troglodytic 'Christian' All-American Honest Hard Workers are extolling the virtue of your decidedly un-Christian, un-American, ill-informed opinions, why don't you stop and think about real threats? Obesity, smoking, drunk driving... Hell, consider the least of these: terrorist deaths in this country pale in comparison to drunk driving deaths. There is a drunk driving accident every 30 minutes here. Where is your outrage? Drunk drivers are terrorists! Next time you elbow up to the bar and watch some drunk scumbag head for the door... Shoot him! He's probably going to kill someone! But wait... "He looks like me..."
Now that I think about it, I have a friend training police in Afghanistan. He recently survived an ambush by Taliban forces. Are they the terrorists? No... they are simply fighting a force that is in a land they once controlled. The problem is that we are over there at all. My friend is there because the current administration LIED to the American public, and we the people were too afraid (and many of you still are, judging by comments here) to stop and say... show us the proof. So my friend, and many others' friends, brothers, fathers, and mothers are fighting and dying in a foreign land. They are there because of our fear.
Man, perhaps WE are the terrorists.
We sure are a hell of a lot better at killing ourselves than anyone else.

and about the Stratford High incedent... I personally know several kids that went to that school and were put on the floor against the walls during this
the GCPD had every right to do what they did except one small detail, they got there too late
the honor role kids told me that the dealers got their stuff out of there ahead of time because someone knew GCPD was coming, that's why it turned ugly and embarassing
had the creek's pd been able to get in there without everyone knowing about it ahead of time the story would have unfolded quite differently
like I said I know some of the kids that went their and that's their story
big lesson for local LEO's on what not to do I'm sure...

You people are pathetic. You think journalists AREN'T asking questions??!! If you believe that, you are an idiot. They can only report what officials tell them, so if law enforcement aren't giving information, no information will be reported. Wake up.

Any person or persons of Middle Eastern descent traveling through the South should be very afraid of what "WE" might have in the trunk, the glove box, or under the seat of our vehicles. Just do yourself a favor and keep on going to some other spineless part of this country that will let you practice your "religion of peace" without consequence. I think I speak for a very large number of proud Southerners who would like to see all Muslims REST IN PEACE. Why take chances by making any exceptions?
Unlike the rest of the world, WE know who the enemy is, so stay the hell out of South Carolina. That goes for any cowardly, bleeding heart, liberal minded, politically correct, ACLU supporting, traitorous vermin who disagree. Go ahead and respond with the typical rhetoric that will eventually lead to your own demise. In the meantime, the people of the South will continue protecting our own and the true AMERICAN way of life.

You can all go to hell for bagging on the Amish. Most of my family, including my grandparents, are amish and live in Pennsylvania. More than half of my family are Menonite. And what's this "walks like a duck, looks like a duck, must be a duck" crap? Does that make racial profiling and such alright? Look, a black guy driving through suburbia, much be a gangbanger. What the hell is he doing in our naighborhood? Pull him over on suspicion of being black and up to no good. He looks black, acts black, must be black. Therefore he is guilty of being a thug. What a load of BS. That's like seeing a white woman with 4 kids at the dollar store and automatically thinking she is white trash.

"Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights organization for Muslims, said the men arrested are Youseff Megahed, 21, and Ahmed Mohamed, 24 - two University of South Florida students."
CAIR has less than 1800 members nationwide. The organization has been named an unindicted co-conspirator in the government's case against The Holy Land Foundation's funneling of money to Hamas.
Several high-ranking members of CAIR, both past and present, have been quoted advocates of terrorism against Israel and the West.
But those are just minor details and have no relevance in this updated report.
Thanks.
Keep up the good work Post and Courier...
Quite the informative news-reporting you have down there in South Carolina.

It's painfully obvious that there are many people who don't deserve the priveledge to live in our great country......they certainly haven't done a darn thing to protect it, even in a simple blog post. You are a plague to our great nation and are nothing more than a arrogant, ungrateful leaches. Please go suck some other country dry. As for me, I quit smoking 5 years ago, am at a healthy weight and wear my seatbealt, don't drink and drive, have never been arrested and don't see how attacking anyones personal choice to give themself cancer or to be overweight is any way related to the topic at hand.

Kerry,
Timothy McVeigh was a "Christian" like jihadists are "Muslim." If you think Muslims are a dangerous lot, are you forgetting that Christians were responsible for the Inquisition(s) and for many crusades? George Carlin wisely observed that "God is a leading cause of death." And if you want to get secular (which murder for cause is), how many civilians are dead because of American foreign policy?
Kerry, if your vision of "the true AMERICAN way of life" is anything like what you are espousing here (I'm sure it will be deleted soon, so posterity I'll sum it up as the most flagrantly moronic bigotry I've read here), then you might want to adjust your world view and read some history.
I assume you consider yourself a Christian. Please tell me how your opinion is even remotely like something Christ would do, or taught us to do. I would like to know which church you attend, and would like for you to recite verbatim what you wrote here in front of the congregation.
Multiplicity of opinions AND religions ARE the true American way. Refer the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It is because of these defining American documents that I can say that those of us who disagree with your opinion are not "traitorous vermin," as you state.
Aren't you, in fact, the un-American for believing that we are?

Underdog, please take your off topic, atheistic verbal vomit elsewhere. You're stinking up the place with your Anti-Christ(ian) rhetoric. We are not living in the days of the Inquisition....we are living in the days of Shiite Muslims wanting to kill Americans wherever they are in the world, or did you fail to notice that ?!?

underdog has made remarks that should be considered traitorous. How can he possibly get off defending the Taliban? His comments are inflammatory and totally anti-American.

There I said it again, so "underdog" and others will read it and UNDERSTAND it. I would suggest this individual go have a look at where the World Trade Center once stood or possibly view a few beheadings if further confirmation that Muslims are a dangerous lot is necessary. As I said, disagree with me if you like and there is a good chance your fate will be determined by this enemy. Unless of course your life is somehow spared because others like me are willing to die defending it. Hopefully, "underdog" and others who choose to believe in an ideal world of absolute tolerance will heed my advice to stay out of South Carolina. We have had enough and will be ready to stop these 7th century barbarians from trying to impose their way of life on us.

Navyvlueblood, Thanks for pointing that out. Not too many years ago, many suitcase sized nuclear bombs went missing from the Soviet Union. They have been traced to militant groups in Arab Nations, mostly Iran. When I lived in Vegas, it became glaringly apparent how easy if would be for a suicide bomber to check into a hotel in any part of the country and wipe a quarter of the US off the map forever. Humbling stuff. I'm all for treating any person from a country that has openly professed hatred towards us with caution. It's practical and reasonable to do so.

The South is ready and willing to kill the enemy.
Read the facts:
Iraq Deaths Hit South Hard
By JAMES W. CRAWLEY
Media General News Service
WASHINGTON - More than half the 2,000 U.S. troops killed in Iraq either came from the South or were assigned to military bases in the region, according to an analysis of Pentagon records.
The U.S. military death toll in Iraq since March 2003 reached 2,000 Tuesday. The South continues to bear a heavy toll from the war, said national security analysts.
Military officials Tuesday reported the deaths last Friday of a Fort Benning, Ga., soldier who died of wounds suffered Oct. 17 in Samarra, Iraq, and two Marines who were killed in a roadside bombing in Baghdad that claimed another Marine and a Navy corpsman.
The 2,000 total counts those killed by hostile fire and those who died from accidents, non-combat injuries, illness or suicide while fighting in Iraq, nearby waters or Kuwait.
Of those, about 55 percent either listed permanent homes or were assigned to military bases in Southern states.
"You would expect that," said John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, an Alexandria, Va.-based think tank. "There is a greater propensity to join (the military) in the South. And, you can't drive very far in the South without running into an Army base."
The South, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, comprises Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
Thirty-seven percent of fallen troops listed their permanent residency in the South.
A recent report by the Durham, N.C.-based Institute for Southern Studies showed that 35 percent of active-duty personnel were recruited from the South. According to the report, 51 percent of the military is based in those states.
"The way people see and feel (the war's impact) is in the casualties from the war," said Chris Kromm, the institute's executive director.
He cited a CBS poll in September that found 34 percent of Southerners thought the Iraq war was having a "major impact" on their communities - 10 percentage points higher than any other region.
"Clearly, the Southerners feel the Iraq war is disproportionately affecting their communities," Kromm said.
