Tropical Storm Hanna turned north at midday and forecasters were divided on what that means for Charleston. The National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service, Charleston, continued to call for landfall near McClellanville at 2 a.m. Saturday. AccuWeather.com, a private forecasting company, said the latest jog indicates the storm will make landfall farther north near the South Carolina-North Carolina line.
SLED: Man appears uninvolved in shooting
WALTERBORO — A man named as a "person of interest" in last month's slaying of a Colleton County sheriff's deputy does not appear to have any involvement in the case, a SLED investigator said Thursday. Roger Heaton said Joshua Lewis Petty, 31, was questioned hours after Dennis Compton was killed on Aug. 6 but was then turned over to the Cottageville Police Department to face outstanding warrants. Charges dropped in fatal house fire
Prosecutors dropped the arson case against a 75-year-old North Charleston man accused of intentionally setting the fire that killed his wife, conceding they had little chance of overturning a judge's ruling that a police search warrant was improper. The move means Bobby McCarn won't be tried for first-degree arson, even as prosecutors say he intentionally set the house fire that killed 53-year-old Deborah McCarn in February 2006.
