A year after a 1-2 finish by Ethiopian runners, the women's division of the 31st annual Cooper River Bridge Run turned out to be another Kenyan conquest. Leah Malot competing in her first Bridge Run on Saturday and earned a $5,000 paycheck by winning the 10-kilometer race with a time of 33 minutes and 22.6 seconds to beat fellow Kenyan Janet Cherobon, who ran a 33:36.8. The winning time didn't even come close to putting Malot in the top 10 all-time times, but it gave her country, Kenya, another title. Read story.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: This Cooper River Bridge Run thing is a fad. Sure it's gone on for 31 years and sure every year it draws more than 30,000 people to the Lowcountry, but I'm telling you, one day, everybody's going to come to their senses and say: "Wait a minute, why am I paying $25 to run 6.2 miles with a bunch of strangers at 8 in the morning?" The basics: The Bridge Run will start at 8 a.m. Saturday on Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant. The 10K run and walk will finish on King Street in Charleston near Marion Square. The registration fee is $30.
How many?: As of 3:30 p.m. Saturday, assistant race director Tami Varn said 31,320 people have signed up for the event. That's ahead of the year-to-date figure in 2007 of 30,600. Last year, a total of 37,472 registered for the event and 28,953 participated.
In-person registration: Those who have yet to register can do so at the Bridge Run office, 360 Concord Street, Suite 202, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Registration and packet pick-up will be at the Bridge Run Expo, Gaillard Auditorium, 77 Calhoun Street, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday.
Online Registration: Registration on www.active.com ends at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.
Kids run: The Kids Run will be Friday. Race day registration will be noon to 3 p.m., warm-up with T-Bone 3-4 p.m., and running events 4-5 p.m. Registration fee is $8 in advance and $10 on the day of the event.
Shuttles: Buses start leaving Gaillard Auditorium (line up on Anson Street) 5-6:45 a.m. Saturday and drop off participants near Sea Island Shopping Center in Mount Pleasant. Return buses also leave from Gaillard 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Special parking rates: From 5 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday, Bridge run participants may park at the parking garages at the Visitor's Center, Aquarium and Gaillard for a flat fee of $5.
