Cortney Vincent updatePosted 01:14 p.m., May 14, 2008 I've been hearing some stuff about Cortney Vincent lately, and not much of it is good. I'm talking about the linebacker's chances of being reinstated to Clemson's football team. Those chances seemed pretty good after spring practice. They don't seem nearly as good now. Vincent, who was arrested for DUI in December and also suspended for spring practice for a violation of team policy unrelated to the DUI, hasn't exactly been making a compelling case for coach Tommy Bowden to reinstate him. I don't get the feeling Vincent is doing anything that bad. But given that he's pretty much lost the benefit of the doubt with these transgressions, he's not giving coaches and teammates the impression that he's serious about remaining with the Tigers for his senior year. This is somewhat surprising to hear, because I'd always considered Vincent a team player. Stay tuned. LW |

Vincent is a pretty good athlete and could have had a bang-up season that would've attracted some NFL scouts. I really don't understand how these youngsters lose their way with all the gold that lays before them. It's really strange, and tragic.
I'd be surprised if Vincent is allowed to return to the team. Speaking of linebackers, I wonder if there's any news on Antonio Clay. He really stepped up strong in 2006 and, in my opinion, was the best backer that year. That's one guy I really hope to see back.

With Scotty Cooper and Stanley Hunter lurking as future stars (I truly believe Stanley Hunter has an opportunity to be the best linebacker we've had in a long, long time--this based on seeing him in action with Byrnes HS and in the spring game), CV's presence won't be missed as much as many previously thought. And like the previous poster , I'll be very surprised to see Vincent in a Clemson uniform come fall.

As far as I know, the status on Antonio Clay is the same. And that is: Don't expect him to be in a Clemson uniform this fall.
Clay was in a very low place emotionally late last season, and particularly leading up to the bowl game in Atlanta. I haven't heard that he's made overwhelming progress since then. It's a very unfortunate situation stemming from the death of his sister in August of 2006.
ashleyriver: You could be right about Vincent not being missed as much as initially thought. I've gotten sort of the same vibe. However, I do think his presence and his experience will be missed in the opener against Alabama. Young guys like Hunter and Maye appear to have a lot of potential, but expecting them to play well that early might be asking too much.
