The day ahead

Posted 07:01 a.m., May 13, 2008

World stock markets were mixed overnight on mixed news from a pair of major French banks and a worrisome report on British inflation. A dip in oil prices boosted the dollar against other major currencies, while gold moved lower.

Gasoline prices locally set another record high this morning, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded was $3.587 compared with $3.562 yesterday, $3.223 a month ago and $2.804 a year ago.

Major economic report scheduled today: April retail sales. Consensus forecast: down 0.1 percent after rising 0.2 percent in March. (But see my posting yesterday on “Deflating Retail Sales” for further details.)

Also today, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will be speaking about “liquidity” at a Fed-sponsored conference in Sea Island, Ga., at 8:30 this morning; and six regional Federal Reserve Bank presidents will be making speeches around the country (and one in France) through the day, with possible market-moving results.
