Jobs in focusPosted 07:06 a.m., May 8, 2008 Global stock markets were mostly sharply lower overnight following Wall Street’s pullback on Wednesday, with the declines stoked by renewed inflation worries after oil prices hit new all-time highs. Crude oil futures, however, edged lower this morning, as did gold, while the dollar was slightly higher. Gasoline prices locally moved higher this morning, approaching the record high of $3.515 a gallon set a week ago. The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded was $3.506 this morning, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report, up from $3.491 yesterday, $3.189 a month ago and $2.806 a year ago. It’s a pretty light week for economic reports. On the agenda today, the weekly report on claims for unemployment insurance benefits is due at 8:30 a.m. The consensus forecast is for 370,000 new claims, down 10,000 from last week’s reported number, which is likely to be revised one way or the other. Last week’s monthly report on the national employment situation was surprisingly positive, in part because the weekly claims numbers have been rising pretty persistently for quite a while and currently stand at a four-year high, as the following chart shows: Local meetings and events today: The USC Small Business Development Center holds a seminar on Government Contracts and Your Small Business. 9-11 a.m. 5900 Core Drive, 5th floor, North Charleston. $30.
