Boo, John and Nicole

Posted 02:21 p.m., April 30, 2008

The Wachovia Championship in Charlotte is a player favorite and offers plenty of perks. This week, some of the PGA golfers got to take part in the Richard Petty Driving Experience at nearby Lowe’s Motor Speedway. One was none other than Verizon Heritage champion Boo Weekley, who along with Anthony Kim, was put on the clock for slow play during the final round of the Heritage. Does it surprise you Boo’s a NASCAR fan? In a story about the experience on www.pgatour.com, Weekley told Helen Ross that he estimated he drove at 138 mph his first lap and 150 mph his second lap. Weekley also revealed he’s gone nearly that fast on Interstate 10 near his home in Florida…

John Daly recently had surgery to repair a stomach muscle – no snickers coming from this corner. He also made headlines this week when a video surfaced of him hitting golf shots at Murder Rock, in Branson, Mo., a course he is designing. Daly wasn’t wearing shoes or a shirt when the video was shot. You think that’s not a problem? The course, by the way, was built by Landmark Land, which built the Ocean Course at Kiawah. And founding members of Murder Rock include Glen Campbell, the Gatlin Brothers, Tony Orlando, Mel Tillis, Bobby Vee and (I'm not kidding!) Paul Revere. The course gets its name because it's near a place where a gang would ambush travelers during the Civil War…

Nicole Castrale, who beat Lorena Ochoa in a playoff to win last year’s Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika at RiverTowne, talked Monday about her working deal with her husband, Craig, who is also her caddie. “Most caddies work on a percentage basis. What’s your deal with Craig?” she was asked. “Craig gets a hundred percent,” she laughed. “It's funny. I get to write him off. I pay him like any other caddie. Sometimes he gets a higher percentage than most. It's a great team.” Tickets for the Ginn Tribute can be purchased online at www.ginntribute.com or by calling (843) 849-2380…

A reminder that the 58th annual Charleston City Amateur Golf Championship will be played May 16-18 at Charleston Municipal Golf Course. The registration deadline is 5 p.m. May 9, and the field will be limited to the first 208 to register. I understand the field is almost full.

The 54-hole tournament is open to male amateurs who have resided in Charleston, Dorchester or Berkeley counties since Nov. 16, 2007 and are 18 years of age as of July 9, 2008. Entry forms are available at the Municipal Golf Shop, online at www.charlestoncity.info/golf, by calling (843) 795-6517 or e-mail golf@ci.charleston.sc.us…

Boo Weekley is for real. I lived in Pensacola for many years and I can tell you Milton and Pace (adjoining towns) are full of rednecks. His speech is much more refined that the norm from his home town. I guess being in the spotlight is opening his eyes to how he is to present himself. I just hope he doesn't stray too far from his redneck background. The are down to earth people.
