Interesting opining from SpurrierPosted 01:21 p.m., May 7, 2008 COLA -- Not sure if he meant to, but Steve Spurrier made an awfully interesting comment Tuesday night at the Aiken County Gamecock Club meeting. Spurrier talked about the need for USC's QBs to play and act like former Gamecocks QB Steve Taneyhill, a product of the early 1990s when USC jumped into the SEC. Taneyhill holds many of the school's passing records, including TDs. "Hopefully, Tommy Beecher or Chris Smelley can improve and really jump out there and play like Steve Taneyhill," Spurrier told reporters at USC Aiken. "Taneyhill came out there with his hair flapping and with an air of confidence that I'm going up and down the field and you boys can't stop me. I wish we had one like that. We don't have one like that. We haven't had one since I've been here. " Two things stuck out LOUDLY: Sound like anyone you know not named Tommy Beecher or Chris Smelley? I think the door is still creaked open for Stephen Garcia. I'm not saying the road is paved for him to nab the job in the near future. In fact, it's purely an uphill climb for Garcia. He has a very distinct list of things he must complete this summer, while working in his hometown of Tampa, Fla., to even get back to campus. If he does that, he'll still be metaphorical miles from the field. Even though Spurrier has said he'll worry about Garcia if and when he returns, you can't help but read between the Freudian lines from his Aiken speech. Listen, Spurrier likes Garcia. He really does. If he didn't, I strongly suspect he would've been gone long, long ago. He sees himself in Garcia. He sees Taneyhill in Garcia. He sees a winner in Garcia. But all that's contingent upon Garcia cleaning up his still-young act. Everyone's pulling for Garcia to do just that. When a young man is as talented as Garcia, you want to see what he can do. (Note: I planned to go to the meeting, but got caught up in other things. Because of that, I'm lifting this material from peer Scott Hood from Gamecockcentral.com. Hood, by the way, diligently goes to each and every one of these GC meetings. Crazy, insane level of work there. Not sure it's worth the effort most of the time, but something interesting did surface Tuesday.) -- Th |

Perhaps thats Spurrier's problem. How can anyone see Garcia as a winner? Forget all the off the field stuff, he hasn't done anything on the field to warrant all this attention. Yeah he was a good high school player but all D1 players were good in high school.

(Sorry, was on vacation or would've responded sooner.)
Totally agree about Garcia. It's that continual concept spinning around Garcia -- he's the biggest 'what if' in college football. He's a walking possibility. But that means nothing unless it evolves into reality.
And time is very nearly up.
