Staley is new women's coachPosted 01:00 p.m., May 7, 2008 COLA -- South Carolina plans to introduce Dawn Staley this weekend as its new women's basketball coach, according to a pair of sources. Staley is a three-time Olympian who has been coaching at Temple since 2000. She had led the Owls to five NCAA appearances since 2002 and six in her tenure. Staley, 38, was the Atlantic 10 coach of the year in 2004 and 2005. She is currently 172-80 at Temple. She was the fastest coach in women's basketball history to win 100 games. Staley fits AD Eric Hyman's bill of finding a candidate who's won on every level. Staley was a standout guard at Virginia during the early 1990s before her Olympic and professional career. A native of Philadelphia, she is called the city's "favorite daughter" in her Temple coaching bio. But Staley has some family ties to the Palmetto State. She's also expected to receive a modest raise above the $500,000 a season she was earning at Temple. Staley will be replacing Susan Walvius, who resigned under pressure from school officials. Her resignation becomes effective May 31. Walvius was 165-160 (.508) overall and just 51-103 (.331) in SEC play. -- Th |
