Cory Boyd WatchPosted 01:06 p.m., April 27, 2008 COLA -- I'm watching some of the players, especially running backs going, in the early part of Draft Day Part Deux. And I'm thinking that I'd much rather have Cory Boyd than some of these guys who'll never see the field. Pretty much every scouting report I've seen about Boyd says he's got the strong potential to outplay several of the RBs taken above him. If that's the case, then why wouldn't a team take a bit of a chance on him. Isn't that what the middle rounds are all about? I just know I'd want Boyd on my NFL team. Immediately, he'd be a special teams contributor. The guy plays every play like his last. As it's been pointed out by me and many others, it's a product of the Orange, N.J., environment he left behind. Knocking heads on a football field is a gift for a guy from his neighborhood, and he plays that way. He plays like he's taking out all his life's aggression on the field. You know who that reminds me of? Sounds an awful lot like Curtis Martin's story when he came out of a tough part of Pittsburgh. Martin, by the way, went on to rush for 14,000 career yards and 100-plus TDs. I'm not saying Boyd could do that, but I think he could be productive in a multiple-back system. I'd love to see him go to a place like Philly, where he could take some of the tough carries from Brian Westbrook, who is as good of a pass-catching RB as there is in the league. Boyd can also do that well, as you saw at USC. Perfect example of what I was saying earlier: The Cowboys just took Georgia Tech's Tashard Choice. I really believe Boyd is a better backup to what they have than Choice. But, hey, I guess I'm not a "draft guru." Being around Boyd, seeing how he behaves around the team, you cannot help but pull for him. He's a guy stuck with that character tag, because of his drug-related suspension for a season. But I don't think this is someone you have to worry about when he makes it to the league. He's someone who's found maturity in college, to me. We'll see where/when he goes. Also curious to see if someone takes a flier on DE/LB Casper Brinkley or QB Blake Mitchell. Hunch says they'll be in search of free agent contracts. -- Th |
