Bulldogs' APR explained

Posted 01:36 p.m., May 7, 2008

Citadel basketball scored a 923 on the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate report released Tuesday, below the 925 cutoff for penalties. Yet the Bulldogs were not among the schools penalized with scholarship reductions, etc.

Steve Taylor in The Citadel's athletic department explained why. If a program scores between 900 and 925, it is not penalized if it had no student-athlete leave the program during the year while ineligible. Citadel basketball fell in that category.

The APR awards a program a possible two points for each student-athlete -- one of if he returns to the team, and another if he is academically eligible. That's a "2 for 2."

A "1 for 2" is a player who returns but is ineligible. An "0 for 2" is a player that leaves the program and is ineligible. A program can fall between 900 and 925 and escape penalty if it does not have any "0 for 2s".

Hope that helps.
