Dogs lose 3 of 4 for the week

Posted 01:22 p.m., May 5, 2008

Was not in Statesboro to see the play, but reading Citadel SID Patrick Walsh's account, it sounds like Fred Jordan had a legit beef about Georgia Southern's final run in Sunday's 6-5 win, giving the Eagles 2 of 3 in the series.

Bases loaded, one out -- "Jeremiah Parker hit a ground ball to Matt Arnold at third, who promptly threw home to force the lead runner. However, home plate umpire Ed Haggray said that GSU's Ty Wright slid under the tag, and that Citadel catcher Sid Fallaw's foot was not on the plate."

Jordan argued, but to no avail. The Bulldogs lost their third straight SoCon series and have lost 10 of their last 12 games, dropping to 12-12 in the league, good for sixth place.

Despite all that, there were some encouraging signs. After scoring nine runs in three losses at College of Charleston, The Citadel scored 30 in three games at GSU, batting .350 for the series. Catcher Richard Jones hit three homers and batted .538 for the series and .412 in four games for the week, hauling his season average up to .276 with nine homers and 38 RBI. If Jones can get hot for the rest of the season, The Citadel could still be a force in the SoCon Tournament. Last year, the Bulldogs were seeded seventh and went from a play-in game to the title game.

Sonny Meade hit .556 for the week and drove in eight runs, earning Bulldog of the week honors. Wes Wrenn was the only Citadel pitcher to earn a win in the week, against GSU on Saturday, but freshman Asher Wojciechowski probably pitched the best game on Sunday, allowing nine hits and four earned runs over seven innings while taking a no-decision.

The Citadel closes out the SoCon regular season with three games against Western Carolina (24-24, 10-11) at Riley Park. WCU has won five straight -- including a 5-2 win over Tennessee -- and swept Wofford last weekend. WCU ranks third in the SoCon in team batting (.310) and fourth in team ERA (6.15).

Looking at the SoCon race, Elon (16-8) has one series left, at woeful Davidson. A sweep gets Elon to 19 wins. To match that, Furman would have to win four of six against App State and GSU; UNCG would have to win five of six against GSU and Davidson; and C of C would have to sweep Wofford and WCU.

Standings and SoCon series left:

Team SoCon Overall Series left

Furman 15-6 29-15 at App State, GSU

Elon 16-8 35-16 at Davidson

UNC Greensboro 14-7 29-19 at GSU, Davidson

College of Charleston 13-8 30-17 Wofford, at WCU

Georgia Southern 12-9 28-19 UNCG, at Furman

Citadel 12-12 24-23 WCU

Appalachian St. 10-11 26-23 Furman, at Wofford

Western Carolina 10-11 24-24 at The Citadel, C of C

Wofford 4-17 21-28 at C of C, App State

Davidson 2-19 10-32 Elon, at UNCG

I really do hope this is a good sign for our team, but my expectations are a little more tempered. Apparently, Georgia Southern's field is a hitter's park and their pitching isn't stellar. At least one team has scored more than 10 runs in 21 out of the 27 games played there and GSU's team ERA is 6.81.

Hopefully, bu playing games like these, though, the Dogs can get their confidence up and have their bats catch fire during the SoCon Tourney. Luckily, they face Western Carolina (6.15 team ERA) and Presbyrterian College (6.62 team ERA) at home in the next 2 weekends.

Go Dogs!

~Sorry for all the stats - I got a little bored at work today.

big hurt, nothing wrong with a few stats. As a side note, I hear that freshman lefty Drew Mahaffey from Summerville HS may get the start tonight at Winthrop. He pitched two innings last week without giving up a hit. He's only pitched 5.2 innings this year, and this would be his first college start. Maybe he'll be of some help down the stretch.

Interesting Stats that tell the story of the Bulldogs season:

When leading after 6 innings, the Dogs are 21-2. When trailing after 6, the Dogs are 1-18.

When leading after 8 innings, the Dogs are 21-0. When trailing after 8, the Dogs are 0-22.

Moral of the story: We gotta get ahead! ha
